It is in the traditional air varié form with an introduction, theme and 3 variations. The original melody (known as Nicaea) was composed by John Bacchus Dykes’ especially for Reginald Heber’s renowned hymn of praise and became universally popular when it was included in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861. A beautiful solo that will test the soloists ability to show true emotion.

A century ago, James Causley Windram, then band director of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers (and later the Coldstream Guards) asked Gustav Holst if he would transcribe some of the composer's Hymns from the Rig Veda for military band. Always a band advocate, Holst readily agreed. In this thoroughly characteristic suite, two of Windram's settings (Hymn of the Travellers and Battle Hymn) have been edited for modern instrumentation, while a third (Hymn to Manas) has been arranged by Jon Ceander Mitchell from Holst's original choral setting.

This flexible piece in 4 parts was written by Jacob de Haan as a ‘theme tune’ for the Yamaha teaching method seminars in Germany. The solemn and dignified hymn-like melody will add a touch ofgrandeur to any performance. Its simplicity and rich harmonies suggest overtones of Land of Hope and Glory and this would be a good item to bring a deep and uplifting sense of occasion to your concert.

Vanuit zijn didactische ervaring met het componeren van eenvoudige muziek voor variabele bezettingen gaf de Nederlandse componist Jacob de Haan in 2004 een workshop tijdens het Yamaha Bläserklassen Kongress in Oberursel (bij het DuitseFrankfurt). Op verzoek van Wolfgang Feuerborn, leider en initiator van het project, schreef Jacob de Haan speciaal voor deze seminars een hymne. Hij noemde het stuk - heel toepasselijk - The Seminar Hymn. Dit werk isleerzaam en motiverend voor jonge muzikanten - en een plezier om naar te luisteren.

Aufgrun d seiner didaktischen Erfahrungen im Komponieren von leichter Musik für variable Besetzungen hielt der holländische Komponist Jacob de Haan im Rahmen des Yamaha BläserKlassen-Kongress es in Oberursel 2004 einen Lehrgang ab. Auf Wunsch von Wolfgang Feuerborn, dem Leiter und Initiator des Projekts, schrieb Jacob de Haan speziell für dieses Seminar eine Hymne. Er nannte das Stück - passenderweise - The Seminar Hymn. Dieses Werk vermittelt geschickt wertvolles Lehrmaterial für junge Musiker mit viel Motivation und Spielfreude, die sich auch aufs Publikum übertragen wird.

La Yamaha BläserKlasse est un projet développé par Yamaha en partenariat avec le système éducatif allemand. Ce concept permet d’enseigner la musique d’ensemble l’école primaire (et premier cycle secondaire). Bénéficiant d’une riche expérience dans la composition d’œuvres pédagogiques instrumentation variable, Jacob de Haan compose un hymne, spécialement pour les séminaires d’application durant lesquels les enseignants sont formés cette nouvelle manière d’apprendre la musique.

Sa ving Private Ryan is certainly one of Steven Spielberg's most powerful films. The brilliant John Williams score creates part of this power. Hymn to the Fallen one of the most powerful and emotional melodies which appears during the closing credits, evokes a feeling of hope and strength amid the overall tone of reverence. Philip Sparke has transcribed this moving work for brass band using John Williams original orchestral score as the source. For added effect this work can also be performed with a wordless chorus, with parts being available separately.

Saving Private Ryan is beslist een van de meest indrukwekkende films van Steven Spielberg. Its members are towns where people are still finding themselves reminiscing over the old times; towns that are rich in theatres, squares, cafés, restaurants and spiritual places; towns with untouched landscapes and charming craftsman where people are still able to recognize the slow course of the seasons, and respect their authentic products, true taste as well as their health. The Hymn of Cittaslow, which was commissioned by the organisation itself, is entirely inspired by their commitment to the preservation of the member towns. The tempo is naturally ‘slow', and the themes somehow soundfamiliar. On the one hand, the music emanates peace and quiet, but it also sounds grand in its lyricism, thereby reflecting the beauty of the Cittaslow towns.

This hymn was commissioned by â??Antwerpen 93â?. And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated â??Cultural Capital of Europeâ? for 1993. The work-group â??animatieâ? took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premièred by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion.Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labeled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible anduncomplicated.The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colouful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.

The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the ‘Tiroler Landeshymne’ (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

Intégré dans la texture orchestrale de cette œuvre de commande la demande expresse de la formation dédicataire, le bugle donne une couleur locale la composition et enrichit la large gamme des couleurs sonores de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie.

Ameri can Hymn was commissioned by the American Bandmasters Association and the United States Air Force Band. It received its premiere on March 5th, 1980 as part of the 40th anniversary of the American Bandmasters Association in Washington, DC. It is based on an earlier choral work which Schuman contributed to a comprehensive survey entitled American Hymns Old and New, published by Columbia University Press. The Langston Hughes text that inspired the original human is simple and straightforward, which is reflected in the melodic setting (quasi hymn-spiritual).
