probably been posed by
everyone at some time or
another, and the answer
is as challenging as it
is subjective. This is
also the theme of this
work. The poet and
soldier Cyrano de
Bergerac is known for his
big nose and his great
intellect. The 17th
century novelist harbours
feelings for the
beautiful Roxane but is
sure that this love will
never be reciprocated.
Roxane herself falls in
love with the cadet
Christian de Neuvillette,
who is certainly handsome
but could be described as
stupid. Cyrano de
Bergerac writes love
poems on behalf of
Christian to win
Roxanes heart. And then
there is the Count
Guiche, who is married
but also wants to make
her is mistress.
Christian and Roxane
eventually marry and the
furious Count Guiche
sends Christian and
Cyrano, who serve
together in the Captains
of Gascony regiment, to
the front and, some
months later, on a
suicide mission. Shortly
before the battle, Roxane
confesses to her husband
that she no longer loves
him so much for his
beauty as for his inner
values. Christian is
dismayed and begs Cyrano
to tell Roxane the truth,
but he cant bring
himself to do so.
Christian de Neuvillette
dies in battle and Cyrano
de Bergerac remains
silent about the true
provenance of the
letters. Only much later
does the truth come to
light: scarred by the
war, Cyrano visits Roxane
in the convent where she
has been living since
Christians death and
confesses his love for
her. He ultimately dies
in Roxanes arms.

is packed full different
motives thrown around the
ensemble hinting at the
programmatic leitmotifs
of Wagner. Every section
of the ensemble gets a
workout in this
delightful 10-minute
work.
A Symphonic
Sketch for Concert Band.
The resurgence of
interest in George
Lloyd's music must give
us faith that such talent
will ultimately prevail
against sometimes unhappy
circumstances. Lloyd was
Cornish and showed
precocious gifts at an
early age - he had
completed his first
symphony by the age of
nineteen. During the
1930s he completed two
operas, one of which -
The Serf - was produced
at Covent Garden in 1938.
He was set for a
glittering career as a
composer. The Second
World War intervened and
he was invalidad out of
the Navy in a
shell-shocked state, and
having written very
little serious music
since 1937 went to
Switzerland to
recuperate, looked after
by his wife, Nancy.
Painfully, he began
writing again -
symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 -
and then returned to
England. He needed to
earn a living and he set
up a mushroom farm in
Dorset. But slowly he
began to compose again
and drafted more
symphonies in short
score. By this time he
was virtually unknown -
despite being considered
the equal of Walton,
Britten, and other young
stars of English music
some 30 years earlier.
Lloyd decided to embark
on a series of recordings
of his symphonies, and
slowly popular acclaim
enabled him to regain his
position. The Forest of
Arden was written in 1987
as a result of a
commission by the
Solihull Youth Wind Band.
Although Lloyd's music
feels instinctively
written one should not be
misled - it is carefully
crafted, but the craft
and structure are always
subordinated to create a
flow with a strongly
melodic content. Instead
of two or three themes,
The Forest of Arden
contains an abundance of
ideas which can be
described in two groups.
The first group contains
the opening rhythmic
motif, quickly developed
into a short rising
quaver passage in the
woodwinds, and later then
a chromatic ostinato bass
- only 8 bars at this
stage but later expanded.
The second group is broad
and expansive, initially
based on intervals of
rising fifths introduced
by euphonium, tubas, and
baritone saxophone,
immediately echoed by
horns. Low brass and
winds expand the theme
into rising sixths and
octaves. There is a hint
of development, bit this
is arrested as the music
moves to a piu tranquillo
section introduced by the
alto saxophone which
further develops the
rising sixth theme. There
follows a true
development of the
opening material,
starting with the
ostinato bass and
gradually passing through
different tonal centers
until the rising fifths
of the second theme group
are heralded - fortissimo
and poco piu largamente
shortly before the end.
The structure is almost
Wagnerian (albeit on a
much smaller scale), with
themes being used as
leitmotifs, but this is
music which, even within
the space of ten minutes
is conceived on a grand
design.

The Eastman
Wind Ensemble is
America's leading wind
ensemble. Frederick
Fennell first formulated
the general concept of
the wind ensemble at
Eastman nearly 65 years
ago. Under his leadership
the group became known as
the pioneering force in
the wind ensemble
movement in the United
States and abroad. A.
Clyde Roller served as
conductor between 1962
and 1964, continuing the
tradition established by
Fennell. Donald
Hunsberger became
conductor in 1965 and led
the ensemble for 37 years
to international
prominence. The
ensemble's current
director, Mark Davis
Scatterday, was
introduced as the fourth
conductor of this
prestigious group during
the EWE's 50th
anniversary celebration
on February 8, 2002.
Since its founding, the
EWE has been the leader
in elevating the wind
repertory through
recordings. Fennell's
Mercury Recordings albums
of the 1950s and early
'60s are notable for
their pioneering use of
binaural, stereo, and
35mm recording
techniques. These Living
Presence recordings
focused on standard band
literature by the most
respected classical
composers -- heard for
the first time in the
newly balanced
one-per-part
instrumentation. They
also centered on major
repertory not found on
traditional band
programs, such as
Mozart's Serenade in
B-flat (the Gran
Partita), Messiaen's Et
exspecto resurrectionem
mortuorum, and
Stravinsky's Symphonies
of Wind Instruments.
Under Hunsberger, the EWE
continued its progressive
stance in recording
techniques with
participation in
quadraphonic and digital
recording. Since its
founding, the ensemble
has premiered more than
200 new works. The EWE
and Mark Scatterday have
continued this rich
recording tradition with
several CDs starting in
2005 with Danzante
(featuring trumpet
virtuosi James Thompson)

This work
presents the listener
with the wondrous
grandeur of one of the
great mountain ranges in
America, the Sierra
Nevada. When the music
begins, the listener is
greeted with the
awakening of an early
morning in the Sierras,
complete with a
mysterious, foggy mist
that creates a feeling of
complete stillness and
peace with the world. As
the mist slowly
dissipates, hidden forms
begin to make their
presence known and
gradually become a
tremendous panorama of
grand snow-covered
mountain peaks. Grandiose
and immense in all their
beauty and glory, they
stand before you with a
sense of undeniable
power, extending in all
directions as far as the
eye can see. Upon closer
inspection one can
imagine the circling
golden eagles, the regal
elk and royal stags, all
lazily wandering the
hills and canyons of
conifers that stand tall,
reaching for the passing
clouds in hopes of
gaining a few rays of
life-giving sunshine and
moisture. Look in another
direction and you will
see the immense rolling
hillsides of colourful
wild flowers, fluttering
butterflies, birds
darting about, sparkling
waterfalls and all
critters existing in
harmony. After the day's
activities the sun begins
to slip below the
horizon, the mist
returns, and all living
things prepare for
another still night of
sleep, serenity and the
warmth of their secure
bedding places.

original Latvian, it was
Ešenvalds'

madrigals, a collection

plain sincerity of a
hymn, being homophonic
throughout, and its
thorough-going
diatonicism is
straightforward yet lush.

elated return to the home
key, decorated by
soloistic descants,
before sustained vocalise
and a return of the
