over 20 years. She is one
of antiquity’s
best-known women, in
particular because of her
relationships with Julius
Caesar and, above all,
Mark-Anthony, but also
because the cause of her
death remainsa mystery.
The work is split into
three parts and performed
without breaks. The first
section begins with a
bright introduction
representing
Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in
nature and reminiscent of
military music, this
characterises theRoman
general. But soon after,
another theme emerges,
softer and more melodic,
symbolising
Cleopatra’s
femininity. The two
characters then combine
on a faster tempo. The
middle section of the
work depicts the love
thatMark-Anthony and
Cleopatra feel for each
other. This passionate
relationship lasted ten
years and produced three
children. This is
expressed by a warm and
intense theme, just like
the beauty of the
Egyptian queen. The third
andlast section opens in
a determined and military
mood. Mark-Anthony and
Cleopatra were often
apart, the Roman general
was often away on a
campaign. They met up in
Alexandria to celebrate
their triumph. But, as
the targets of
thejealousy and ambition
of Octavius, Julius
Caesar’s son, the
lovers are trapped and
await the inevitable
conquest of Egypt by the
Romans. When Mark-Anthony
heard the false news that
Cleopatra had committed
suicide, he ended his
ownlife. The Queen of
Egypt, for her part, was
imprisoned shortly
afterwards. The two
lovers remain one of
History’s most
famous couples. This
piece was commissioned by
the Wind Orchestra of the
town of Antony, near
Paris, directedby
Philippe Rossignol, to
mark its 90th
anniversary.

This is the
composition that started
it all! A classic of the
wind band literature for
concert and contest
alike. It was something
completely different,
with its appearance in
1964. The band’s
literature had not
experienced the trademark
7/8 measures, which we
all know as a Smith
trait. This composition
also includes one of his
few full band fugatos.
Excellent percussion
writing and a combination
of all themes come
together in a direct
modulation to C Major.
Originally titled
Overture for Winds and
Percussion, the word
Emperata has no meaning;
it was just, as Claude
put it, an intriguing
word! Still
Smith’s

This is the
composition that started
it all! A classic of the
wind band literature for
concert and contest
alike. It was something
completely different,
with its appearance in
1964. The bandâ??s
literature had not
experienced the trademark
7/8 measures, which we
all know as a Smith
trait. This composition
also includes one of his
few full band fugatos.
Excellent percussion
writing and a combination
of all themes come
together in a direct
modulation to C Major.
Originally titled
Overture for Winds and
Percussion, the word
Emperata has no meaning;
it was just, as Claude
put it, an intriguing
word! Still Smithâ??s
best-selling work.

The
Legend of Spirit
Island was
commissioned by the Twin
Ports Wind Orchestra,
Duluth, Minnesota (Mark
Whitlock, conductor), to
honour the euphonium
player, Dick Carlson. The
piece takes its title
from a local legend about
Spirit Island, which lies
in a gap of the St. Louis
River called Spirit Lake.
The legend tells the
story of Chaska, the son
of a Dakota Chief, and
Wetona, the daughter of
Ojibwe Chief Buckado. He
was handsome and she was
beautiful; it
wasn’t long before
they fell in love. This
is a challenging
euphonium solo in which
the versatile soloist can
explore very expressive
melodic sequences, as
well as energetic,
technical
sections.
The

Paul and Barry
Ryan were identical twin
sons of 1950's pop singer
Marion Ryan and were born
on 24th October 1948.
They were groomed for
stardom and had started
singing as a duo before
their fifteenth birthday.
They were signed by Decca
in 1965 and brilliantly
marketed as clean-cut
fashion icons. Their
first single 'Don't Bring
Me Your Heartaches'
reached the UK top twenty
but their success as twin
performers lasted only
three years. In 1968
Barry embarked on a solo
career while Paul
concentrated on writing
and producing. Eloise
with its melodramatic
vocal style and heavily
orchestrated backing was
an early success of this
new collaboration and
went on to be covered by
a variety ofartists,
including punk legends
The Damned.
De
eeneiige tweelingbroers
Paul en Barry Ryan
vormden al een zangduo
voor hun vijftiende
verjaardag. In 1965
tekenden ze een contract
