Prague, also
named ‘The Golden
City’, has been the
cultural and
administrative capital
city of the Czech
Republic for thousands of
years. The city is
beautifully situated on
the river Moldau.
Every year millions
of tourists visit Prague.
It is one of the most
popular cities of Eastern
Europe. With it's
mysterious little
squares, dark alley ways
and cobblestone streets,
the ‘City of the 100
Towers’ is a unique
mixture of architecture,
dominated by monumental
buildings, numerous
churches and the oldest
castle of Europe. The
Bohemian capital city
remains timeless. Visit
the fort and be amazed at
the lovely views over the
Charles Bridge. Spend
your time carefully
browsing through the
little stalls filled with
paintings, photos,
jewelery and
hand-decorated products,
accompanied by the sounds
of the street musicians
in the background.
Notice the famous 15 th
century astronomical
clock that indicates the
time every hour with a
parade of the twelve
apostles. When
composing this piece, it
was Jan Bosveld’s
intention to depict the
atmosphere of this
metropolitan city with
over one million
inhabitants, rather than
to create a fairly
literal musical
portrait. One of the
many other names of

The word
‘tsunami’ is of
Japanese origin. When you
look it up in a
dictionary, you will find
that it means ‘a great
sea wave produced by
submarine earth movement
or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the
superlative of this
awesome expression of
power that nature can
create, and has
catastrophic
consequences.
When Carl Wittrock
completed this
composition not many such
big earth movements had
occurred, but since then
we have become all too
familiar with the
disastrous consequences
which a tsunami may
have. On the 26th of
December 2004 a heavy
seaquake took place near
the Indonesian island of
Sumatra. Tidal waves 10
meters in height ravaged
the coastal regions
ofmany countries for
miles around. The tsunami
took the lives of
thousands of people and
destroyed many villages
and towns.
There
are more areas which run
the risk of being struck
by a tsunami, such as the
island of La Palma, one
of the Canary Islands.
This island is based on
oceanic crust at a
fracture zone and as such
is one of nature’s time
bombs. The consequences
of a natural calamity
like a megatsunami are
immense. In the case
of La Palma, the tidal
wave will move in the
direction of South
America, where it may
reach 50 km inland,
destroying everything on
its way.
In his
composition Wittrock
describes an ordinary day
which will have an
unexpected ending.
Right from the
beginning there seems to
be something in the air,
the music creating an
oppressive atmosphere of
impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted,
broken off suddenly,
followed by silence,
suggesting the calm
before the storm.
Suddenly a short
climax (glissandi in the
trombone part) indicates
the seaquake, and the
megatsunami is a fact.
Hereafter follows a
turbulent passage
symbolising the huge
rolling waves. After
nature’s force has
spent itself, resignation
sets in and the
composition ends with a
majestic ode to nature.
Het woord
'tsunami' is afkomstig
uit het Japans. Het
woordenboek geeft als
betekenis: een vloedgolf
als gevolg van een
onderzeese aardbeving.
Een megatsunami is de
overtreffende trap van
deze vorm van
natuurgeweld en heeft
catastrofalegevolgen.
Toen Carl
Wittrock deze compositie
voltooide waren er nog
niet veel voorbeelden van
dergelijke grote
bevingen, maar inmiddels
weten we maar al te goed
welke desastreuze
gevolgen een tsunami kan
veroorzaken. Op 26
december 2004 vond er een
zware beving plaats in de
zee nabij het
Indonesische eiland
Sumatra. Vloedgolven van
wel 10 meter hoog
teisterden de kuststreken
van menig land in de
verre omtrek. De tsunami
eiste
duizendenmensenlevens en
verwoestte vele dorpen en
steden.
Er zijn
meer gebieden waar sprake
is van een 'directe'
dreiging, zoals op het
eiland La Palma, één
van de Canarische
eilanden. Dit eiland ligt
op een breukvlak en is
daarmeeeen tijdbom van de
natuur. Bij een
calamiteit als een
megatsunami zijn de
gevolgen niet te
overzien. In het
geval van La Palma
begeeft de vloedgolf van
enkele honderden meters
zich richting Zuid
Amerika met alle
gevolgenvan dien. Tot
ongeveer 50 kilometer
landinwaarts heeft de
megatsunami een
allesverwoestende
werking.
In de
compositie schetst
Wittrock een 'gewone' dag
die ongewoon zal aflopen.
Al vanaf het begin hangt
er iets in delucht en is
er sprake van een
dreigende, beklemmende
sfeer. Thema's worden
onderbroken door
plotselinge afbrekingen
en stiltes. Opeens is
daar de korte climax
(glissandi in trombones)
die de beving
symboliseert en de
megatsunamiis een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte
vangt aan, daarmee de
rollende, voortstuwende
golven symboliserend. Na
het natuurgeweld is er
berusting en The Power of
the Megatsunami wordt
afgesloten met een
majestueuze ode aan de
nat.

Whereas ‘Auld
Lang Syne’ may be
considered the best-known
Scottish song ever, yet
at the same time it is an
obscure one, for there
are but few people who
know the complete text by
heart. After the
familiar ‘Should auld
acquaintance be forgot
.....‘ many people take
their refuge to lyrics
like ‘rum tee dum ta
dee ..... lah, lah, lah
........... for auld lang
syne’. Even in
Scotland only a handful
of persons know the
entire text and are able
to give a correct
rendering of it. The
current lyrics have been
attributed to the
Scottish poet Robert
Burns. Burns, however, he
did not write the whole
poem : after he had heard
an old man sing the
centuries-old
Scotchballad, he wrote it
down and added a number
of stanzas (1788).
Historical research
teaches us that the
ballad served many
purposes, both political
and religious.
Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang
Syne’ is sung as a
Christmas Carol and it is
also sung on New Year’s
Eve at the turning of the
year. Apart from that,
though, the song is also
sung on many other
occasions sometimes with
different lyrics, which
usually have Love,
Friendship and/or Parting
as their themes, as these
go well with the
fascinating melody.
In this arrangement
a low-sounding solo
instrument is central.
The harmonization in the
accompaniment fits in
perfectly with the
sentiments this song will
evoke.
Should
auld acquaintance be
forgot And never
brought to mind?
Should auld acquintance
be forgot. And days
of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my
dear, For auld lang
syne, We’ll take a
cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
Misschien wel het
meest bekende Schotse
lied, maar tegelijkertijd
ook het minst bekende, er
zijn er maar weinig
mensen die de tekst mee
kunnen zingen. Na het
bekende ‘Should auld
acquaintaintance be
forgot and .....‘
vervallenvelen in ‘rum
tee dum ta dee ..... lah,
lah, lah ........... for
auld lang syne’.
Zelfs in Schotland is
maar een enkeling in
staat de tekst correct
weer te geven. De
huidige versie wordt
toegeschreven aan de
Schotse dichterRobert
Burns. Burns heeft echter
niet de hele tekst
gemaakt. Toen hij de
eeuwen oude Schotse
ballade door een oude man
hoorde zingen, heeft hij
enkele verzen toegevoegd
(1788). Historisch
onderzoek leert dat de
ballade voorveel
doeleinden gebruikt werd,
voor politieke als ook
religieuze doelen.
Tegenwoordig wordt
‘Auld Lang Syne’
gebruikt als Christmas
Carol en wordt het
gezongen tijdens de
jaarwisseling op
oudejaarsavond.Het lied,
soms meteen andere tekst,
wordt echter op veel meer
plaatsen gebruikt.
Liefde, Vriendschap en
Afscheid zijn dan meestal
de sentimenten die
gecombineerd worden met
de meeslepende
melodie.
In dit
arrangement staat een
‘laag’
solo-instrumentcentraal.<
br> De harmonisatie in de
begeleiding sluit
naadloos aan bij deze
gevoelens die dit lied
oproepen.

centuries-old
Scotchballad, he wrote it
down and added a number
of stanzas (1788).
Historical research
teaches us that the
ballad served many
purposes, both political
and religious.
Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang
Syne’ is sung as a
Christmas Carol and it is
also sung on New Year’s
Eve at the turning of the
year. Apart from that,
though, the song is also
sung on many other
occasions sometimes with
different lyrics, which
usually have Love,
Friendship and/or Parting
as their themes, as these
go well with the
fascinating melody.
In this arrangement
a low-sounding solo
instrument is central.
The harmonization in the
accompaniment fits in
perfectly with the
sentiments this song will
evoke.
Should
auld acquaintance be
forgot And never
brought to mind?
Should auld acquintance
be forgot. And days
of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my
dear, For auld lang
syne, We’ll take a
cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
Misschien wel het
meest bekende Schotse
lied, maar tegelijkertijd
ook het minst bekende, er
zijn er maar weinig
mensen die de tekst mee
kunnen zingen. Na het
bekende ‘Should auld
acquaintaintance be
forgot and .....‘
vervallenvelen in ‘rum
tee dum ta dee ..... lah,
lah, lah ........... for
auld lang syne’.
Zelfs in Schotland is
maar een enkeling in
staat de tekst correct
weer te geven. De
huidige versie wordt
toegeschreven aan de
Schotse dichterRobert
Burns. Burns heeft echter
niet de hele tekst
gemaakt. Toen hij de
eeuwen oude Schotse
ballade door een oude man
hoorde zingen, heeft hij
enkele verzen toegevoegd
(1788). Historisch
onderzoek leert dat de
ballade voorveel
doeleinden gebruikt werd,
voor politieke als ook
religieuze doelen.
Tegenwoordig wordt
‘Auld Lang Syne’
gebruikt als Christmas
Carol en wordt het
gezongen tijdens de
jaarwisseling op
oudejaarsavond.Het lied,
soms meteen andere tekst,
wordt echter op veel meer
plaatsen gebruikt.
Liefde, Vriendschap en
Afscheid zijn dan meestal
de sentimenten die
gecombineerd worden met
de meeslepende
melodie.
In dit
arrangement staat een
‘laag’
solo-instrumentcentraal.<
br> De harmonisatie in de
begeleiding sluit
naadloos aan bij deze
gevoelens die dit lied
oproepen.

In the
tripartite 'Cowboy Suite'
Alan Laken takes us to
the Wild West, the domain
of cowboys, indians,
trappers and other
fortune hunters.
Around 1890 the west
coast of America was
reached, which in effect
meant the end of the Wild
West. Its stories,
however, survived and
have been a source of
inspiration for many
books, films, and, of
course, music. Some
characters, such as Jesse
James, Billy the Kid, and
Buffalo Bill are forever
linked to these
tales.
In the
'Cowboy Suite' we first
hear the 'Hoedown'. At
the end of an exhausting
workday the labourers
used to lay down their
tools, among others the
'hoes' and spontaneously
began to play music on
the instruments which
they then possessed
(guitars, fiddles, and
banjos) and to dance.
After being jolted on the
'Wagon Trail' we reach
the third part, the
'Cowboy Roundup'. In this
last part it becomes
clear that as a cattle
driver it is imperative
to stay firmly seated in
the saddle. As the cattle
are rounded up, i.e.
driven together,
spectacular things
happen.
In de
driedelige 'Cowboy Suite'
neemt Alan Laken ons mee
naar het 'Wilde Westen',
het domein van cowboys,
indianen, pelsjagers en
andere gelukzoekers.
Rond 1890, werd de
westkust van Amerika
bereikt, dit betekende
het eindevan het Wilde
Westen. Maar de
verhalen bleven en waren
een bron voor vele
boeken, films en
natuurlijk muziek. Enkele
personages die
onlosmakelijk verbonden
zijn met deze verhalen
zijn: Jesse James, Billy
the Kid, en
BuffaloBill.
In
de 'Cowboy Suite' horen
we eerst de
‘Hoedown’. Aan het
einde van een zware
werkdag legden de
landarbeiders hun
werktuig, o.a. de 'Hoe'
(schoffel) neer en
begonnen met de dan
beschikbare instrumenten
(Gitaar, Fiddleen Banjo)
spontaan te musiceren en
te dansen. In de
‘Wagon Trial’
hobbelen we naar het
derde deel, de ‘Cowboy
Roundup’. Dat je als
veedrijver goed in je
zadel moet zitten blijkt
wel in het laatste deel.
Tijdens de 'Roundup'(het
bijeendrijven van het

In the
tripartite 'Cowboy Suite'
Alan Laken takes us to
the Wild West, the domain
of cowboys, indians,
trappers and other
fortune hunters.
Around 1890 the west
coast of America was
reached, which in effect
meant the end of the Wild
West. Its stories,
however, survived and
have been a source of
inspiration for many
books, films, and, of
course, music. Some
characters, such as Jesse
James, Billy the Kid, and
Buffalo Bill are forever
linked to these
tales.
In the
'Cowboy Suite' we first
hear the 'Hoedown'. At
the end of an exhausting
workday the labourers
used to lay down their
tools, among others the
'hoes' and spontaneously
began to play music on
the instruments which
they then possessed
(guitars, fiddles, and
banjos) and to dance.
After being jolted on the
'Wagon Trail' we reach
the third part, the
'Cowboy Roundup'. In this
last part it becomes
clear that as a cattle
driver it is imperative
to stay firmly seated in
the saddle. As the cattle
are rounded up, i.e.
driven together,
spectacular things
happen.
In de
driedelige 'Cowboy Suite'
neemt Alan Laken ons mee
naar het 'Wilde Westen',
het domein van cowboys,
indianen, pelsjagers en
andere gelukzoekers.
Rond 1890, werd de
westkust van Amerika
bereikt, dit betekende
het eindevan het Wilde
Westen. Maar de
verhalen bleven en waren
een bron voor vele
boeken, films en
natuurlijk muziek. Enkele
personages die
onlosmakelijk verbonden
zijn met deze verhalen
zijn: Jesse James, Billy
the Kid, en
BuffaloBill.
In
de 'Cowboy Suite' horen
we eerst de
‘Hoedown’. Aan het
einde van een zware
werkdag legden de
landarbeiders hun
werktuig, o.a. de 'Hoe'
(schoffel) neer en
begonnen met de dan
beschikbare instrumenten
(Gitaar, Fiddleen Banjo)
spontaan te musiceren en
te dansen. In de
‘Wagon Trial’
hobbelen we naar het
derde deel, de ‘Cowboy
Roundup’. Dat je als
veedrijver goed in je
zadel moet zitten blijkt
wel in het laatste deel.
Tijdens de 'Roundup'(het
bijeendrijven van het
vee) gaat het er
spectaculair aan toe.

Looking Up,
Moving On was
commissioned by the Tokyo
Kosei Wind Orchestra and
was part of a tour
programme they gave in
May 2012, a tour which
included many areas that
had been devastated by
the 2011 earthquake and
tsunami.The theme of the
piece is the powerful
ability of mankind to
overcome such disasters
and look forward to a
positive future; it opens
in an appropriately
optimistic mood,
featuring bright
orchestral colours and
extensive syncopation. A
chorale-like fanfare is
soon introduced on horns
and euphonium, answered
by chirpy woodwinds. The
mood subsides until an
alto saxophone introduces
a brief quotation from
the composer's The Sun
Will RiseAgain, which
was written to raise
funds for victims of the
2011 disaster. The mood
soon changes and the
horns introduce a noble
theme under woodwind
flourishes. This leads to
the main Vivo
section of the piece
which is characterised
again by strong
syncopations as part of a
florid theme in the low
woodwinds. This melody
undergoes varied
development by all
sections of the band
until the horn fanfare
returns triumphally on
the brass. This is
extended and leads to a
faster coda which brings
together previous
material in counterpoint
to close the work in
optimistic mood.
Looking Up,
Moving On is
gecomponeerd in opdracht
van het Tokyo Kosei Wind
Orchestra. Het werk
maakte deel uit van een
programma uit mei 2012,
dat werd uitgevoerd
tijdens een tournee
waarbij veel regio's
werden bezocht die waren
verwoest door de
aardbeving en tsunami van
2011.Het thema van het
werk is het buitengewone
vermogen van de mens om
dergelijke rampen te
boven te komen en vooruit
te kijken naar een
positieve toekomst. De
opening is dan ook
optimistisch van
karakter, met heldere
orkestrale kleuren en een
rijkelijke syncopering.
Al snel wordt er een
koraalachtige fanfare
geintroduceerd door de
hoorns en het euphonium,
waarop een levendig
antwoord volgt in
dehoutblazerssectie. De
sfeer wordt dan steeds
kalmer totdat een
altsaxofoon een kort
citaat laat horen uit een
eerder werk van de
componist, The Sun
Will Rise Again, dat
werd geschreven om geld
in te zamelen voor de
slachtoffers van de ramp
uit 2011. De stemming
slaat vlug weer om: de
hoorns introduceren een
nobel thema, dat
weerklinkt onder
versieringen in het hout.
Dit leidt naar het Vivo,
het hoofdgedeelte, dat
eveneens wordt gekenmerkt
door sterke
syncoperingen, als
onderdeel van een
sierlijk thema in het
lage hout. De melodie
ondergaat een gevarieerde
ontwikkeling binnen alle
secties van het orkest,
totdat de hoornfanfare op
triomfantelijke wijze
terugkeert in het koper.
De fanfare wordt
vervolgens verder
uitgewerkt en voert ons
mee naar een snellere
coda, die voorafgaand
materiaal in contrapunt
samenbrengt en de
compositie in
optimistische stemming
afsluit.
Looking Up,

Orchestra in Auftrag
gegeben und war Teil des
Konzertprogramms einer
Tour im Mai 2012, welche
viele Gebiete einschloss,
die vom Erdbeben und
Tsunami im Jahr 2011
zerstort worden waren.
Thema dieses Stuckes ist
die gewaltige Fahigkeit
der Menschheit, uber
solche Katastrophen
hinwegzukommen und voll
Optimismus in die Zukunft
zu blicken; es beginnt
dementsprechend in einer
positiven Stimmung mit
strahlenden
Orchesterfarben und einer
ausgepragten
Synkopierung. Schon bald
wird eine choralartige
Fanfare auf den Hornern
und im Euphonium
vorgestellt, die von
munteren Holzblasern
beantwortet wird. Die
Stimmung flaut ab, bis
einAltsaxophon ein kurzes
Zitat aus The Sun Will
Rise Again anspielt,
das der Komponist zur
Spendenbeschaffung fur
die Opfer des Unglucks
2011 geschrieben hatte.
Kurz darauf folgt ein
Stimmungswechsel und die
Horner prasentieren ein
stattliches Thema,
begleitet von Fanfaren in
den Holzblasern. Dies
fuhrt zum mit Vivo
uberschriebenen Hauptteil
des Stuckes, der wiederum
von starken
Synkopierungen gepragt
ist, die Teil eines
bluhenden Themas in den
tiefen Holzblasern sind.
Diese Melodie durchlauft
eine vielgestaltige
Entwicklung durch alle
Instrumentengruppen des
Blasorchesters, bis das
Blech mit der Hornfanfare
triumphal zuruckkehrt.
Dies wird erweitert und
fuhrt zu einer
schnelleren Coda, in dem
verschiedenes zuvor
gehortes Material
kontrapunktisch
zusammenkommt, um das
Werk in einer
optimistischen Stimmung
zu beenden.
Looking Up,

programme de la tournee
effectuee par l'orchestre
en mai 2012, qui s'est
produit dans de

devastees par le
tremblement de terre et
le tsunami de 2011.La
composition a pour theme
l'immense capacite
humaine a surmonter de
telles catastrophes et
envisager l'avenir de
facon positive. Elle
debute justement dans un
climat optimiste
comportant de vives
couleurs orchestrales et
des passages syncopes.
Les cors et les euphonium
introduisent bientot une
fanfare en forme de
choral a laquelle
repondent des bois
petillants. L'ambiance
s'apaise jusqu'a ce
qu'unsaxophone alto
introduise un court
extrait de The Sun
Will Rise Again, du
meme compositeur, une
piece ecrite pour
collecter des fonds en
faveur des victimes du
desastre de 2011. Le
climat change hativement
lorsque les cors
introduisent un theme
noble par-dessus des
fioritures executees par
les bois. Vient ensuite
la principale section
vivo de la piece, qui se
caracterise, encore une
fois, par des syncopes
tres marquees dans le
cadre d'un theme fleuri
assure dans le registre
grave des bois. Cette
melodie fait l'objet de
divers developpements par
tous les pupitres de
l'orchestre jusqu'au
retour triomphant de la
fanfare soutenue par les
cuivres. Celle-ci se
prolonge pour mener a une
coda plus rapide qui
rassemble les elements
precedents en contrepoint
pour clore la piece dans
un climat optimiste.
