The

up in the middle of the
night so we could hike to
a vantage pointat the
foot of Longs Peak, to
watch the sun rise
without any trees
obstructing our view.
Even though we had a few
moreminutes to go before
the sun breached the
horizon, when I looked up
at the face of Longs

intensely with amost

vision lasted only about
ten minutes, after which
the color faded as the

whenever I returned to
the Rocky Mountain

all its glory.An
alpenglow is an optical
phenomenon that is
visible on high altitude
mountains. It happens
twice daily, right before
the sunrises and right
after it sets. The
earth’s atmosphere
scatters the sun’s
light, allowing
particular wavelengths of
light through
andblanketing the
mountains in rich hues of
peach, pink, red, and
purple.Alpenglow opens
with First Light. This
movement begins in the
pre-dawn hour. The music
starts simply and slowly,
thengrows increasingly
animated as the sky
lightens and the horizon
shimmers with color. The
movement explodes in a
massiveflurry of activity
when the sun crosses the
horizon; this energy
eventually fades as the
sun rises in the sky. In
Arc of the Sun,we follow
the sun as it
energetically leaps and
surges upwards in the
sky. The music moves
steadily upwards as it
keeps pacewith the
sun’s progress,
then crests as the sun
reaches its zenith. As
the sun bends back down
towards the earth, the
musicfollows suit,
getting lower in range
and slower as the sun
nears the horizon. In
Radiant Glow, the sun
slips under the

most radiant alpenglow.

Prog
ram Notes: It was a happy
coincidence that the
commission for SINFONIA
XVI: TRANSCENDENTAL
VIENNA came from the
Henry David Thoreau
School located in Vienna,
Virginia. Thoreau is one
of the magic names in
American culture: Henry
David Thoreau, one of the
leading figures of the
Transcendentalist
movement, centered in
19th-century New England,
left us a body of unique
philosophical and
poetical writings. To
utter the words, Walden
Pond, is to invoke an
America long past in
physical actuality, but
still present in the
minds and hearts of many
American citizens. The
name, Vienna, of course,
summons thoughts of the
Old World: culture, fine
food, wine, civilized
cities. While
contemplating the form
that SINFONIA XVI should
take, I found myself
thinking of two pillars
of Viennese culture:
expressionism and the
waltz. Musically
speaking, expressionism
reached a zenith in the
works of Arnold
Schoenberg and Alban
Berg. It was Berg, in
particular, that I wanted
to invoke in the outer
movements of my
composition. I knew I
would also have to
include a waltz, and an
invocation of the
mysterious forces that
are contained in both
expressionism and
transcendentalism. Thus
was the structure of the
work generated. The outer
movements with their
vision of the night sky
and the stars, Aldebaran
and Sirius, frame the
central movements, which
are essentially two
versions of the same
material, and are quieter
and less dramatic. The
outer movements are
symmetrical, and share
both pitch and rhythmic
materials. Accordingly, I
see the work as a ternary
form, with the central
movements forming a unit
within the outer frame: A
(Movement 1) B (Movements
2 & 3) A' (Movement 4).
Harmonically, the work
can be summarized by the
two pitch-series which
occur in the opening bars
of Movement 1: the
initial 12-note row, with
a tonal center on F-sharp
(measures 1-6), and the
subsequent D-minor Dorian
7-note row (beginning in
measure 14). Aspects of
these materials occur in
all four movements, but
they are most strongly
present in Movements 1
and 4. Note that the
12-note row is not
subjected to the usual
serial procedures, but
instead is treated as a
signifier and is left
unchanged. Since the
fourth movement takes up
where the first movement
leaves off, I can
conceive of one
interpretation of
SINFONIA XVI as an
evocation of Thoreau
himself contemplating two
of the brightest stars on
a clear, cold night.
Aldebaran is an orange,
first-magnitude star,
located in the
constellation Taurus;
Sirius, the Dog Star, is
the brightest star in the
sky, and is located in
the constellation Canis
Major. Thoreau interrupts
his star-gazing to
entertain some inward
thoughts, waking dreams,
as it were, then returns
his gaze to the splendid
night sky and all its
treasures. Although many
other interpretations of
the material are
possible, it is important
to remember that the
abstract materials of the
piece -- pitch, rhythm,
structure -- are what
count the most. Ensemble

The
Stadtmusikkapelle
Wilten-Innsbruck
(Austria) invited Belgian
composer Jan Van der
Roost to write a work to
mark the bicentenary of
the Tyrolean fight for
freedom, which was
settled in 1809. Various
musical elements reflect
this historical event.
First, a hymn-like
section rings out, based
on melodic fragments from
the ‘Tiroler
Landeshymne’ (by
Leopold Knebelsberger),
which intertwine in a
counterpoint-like
arrangement. The second
passage is more bellicose
in character, and mirrors
the fight of the
Tyroleans - under the
inspiring leadership of
freedom fighter Andreas
Hofer (1767-1810) -
against Bavarian, French
and Italian troops. Next,
a broad, chorale-style
melodyappears again:
here, the imposing beauty
of nature in Tyrol, and
the amiable, lively
temperament of the people
who live in this
mountainous region, are
glorified.This is neither
a programmatic work
around an historical
reconstruction, nor a
politically inspired
work: it is a combination
of factual and cultural
components, with an
artistic and sonorous
character. The use of the
flugelhorn in particular
gives Tirol Terra
Fortis its
‘couleur
locale’: for this
beautiful instrument can
invariably be found in
the Austrian wind band.
The commissioning music
society had therefore
specifically asked the
composer to incorporate
the instrument in this
work. It certainly
enhances the already
extensive colour palette
of the modern concert
band!
Een hymne
bestaand uit fragmenten
van het Tiroolse
volkslied. Strijdlustige
klanken in het tweede
deel. Tot slot een
melodie in koraalstijl
die de bewoners van Tirol
en de indrukwekkende
schoonheid van de natuur
beschrijft. Hebt ual een
idee? Tirol Terra
Fortis is een
programmatisch werk
rondom de geschiedenis
van Andreas Hofer en de
vrijheidsstrijd van Tirol

The
Stadtmusikkapelle
Wilten-Innsbruck
(Austria) invited Belgian
composer Jan Van der
Roost to write a work to
mark the bicentenary of
the Tyrolean fight for
freedom, which was
settled in 1809. Various
musical elements reflect
this historical event.
First, a hymn-like
section rings out, based
on melodic fragments from
the ‘Tiroler
Landeshymne’ (by
Leopold Knebelsberger),
which intertwine in a
counterpoint-like
arrangement. The second
passage is more bellicose
in character, and mirrors
the fight of the
Tyroleans - under the
inspiring leadership of
freedom fighter Andreas
Hofer (1767-1810) -
against Bavarian, French
and Italian troops. Next,
a broad, chorale-style
melodyappears again:
here, the imposing beauty
of nature in Tyrol, and
the amiable, lively
temperament of the people
who live in this
mountainous region, are
glorified.This is neither
a programmatic work
around an historical
reconstruction, nor a
politically inspired
work: it is a combination
of factual and cultural
components, with an
artistic and sonorous
character. The use of the
flugelhorn in particular
gives Tirol Terra
Fortis its
‘couleur
locale’: for this
beautiful instrument can
invariably be found in
the Austrian wind band.
The commissioning music
society had therefore
specifically asked the
composer to incorporate
the instrument in this
work. It certainly
enhances the already
extensive colour palette
of the modern concert
band!
Een hymne
bestaand uit fragmenten
van het Tiroolse
volkslied. Strijdlustige
klanken in het tweede
deel. Tot slot een
melodie in koraalstijl
die de bewoners van Tirol
en de indrukwekkende
schoonheid van de natuur
beschrijft. Hebt ual een
idee? Tirol Terra

is central to all
elements of Chinese
thought, including
science, philosophy,
medicine andastrology,
and in simple terms tries
to create various cyclic
relationships between
five elements in all
walks of life.An example
is: Earth - Metal - Water
- Wood - Fire - (Earth)
etc. where (in one cycle)
earth bears metal, metal
changes to liquid (water)
when heated, water helps
trees grow, wood burns to
create fire, fire
produces ash (earth) and
the cycle continues.I was
particularly interested
in the cycle of
emotions:- Meditation -
Sorrow - Fear - Anger -
Joy - (Meditation) etc.
and thought this cyclic
principle would provide
an effective emotional
journey for a piece of
music. So Five States
of Change has five
equal sections which
loosely characterise this
emotional cycle. I have
tried to make the music
grow organically, with
minimal repetition, and
each movement evolves
from the musical elements
at the end of the

opening material
appearing, transformed,
at the end of the piece
to complete the cycle.

Queen
Cleopatra ruled Egypt for
over 20 years. She is one
of antiquity’s
best-known women, in
particular because of her
relationships with Julius
Caesar and, above all,
Mark-Anthony, but also
because the cause of her
death remainsa mystery.
The work is split into
three parts and performed
without breaks. The first
section begins with a
bright introduction
representing
Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in
nature and reminiscent of
military music, this
characterises theRoman
general. But soon after,
another theme emerges,
softer and more melodic,
symbolising
Cleopatra’s
femininity. The two
characters then combine
on a faster tempo. The
middle section of the
work depicts the love
thatMark-Anthony and
Cleopatra feel for each
other. This passionate
relationship lasted ten
years and produced three
children. This is
expressed by a warm and
intense theme, just like
the beauty of the
Egyptian queen. The third
andlast section opens in
a determined and military
mood. Mark-Anthony and
Cleopatra were often
apart, the Roman general
was often away on a
campaign. They met up in
Alexandria to celebrate
their triumph. But, as
the targets of
thejealousy and ambition
of Octavius, Julius
Caesar’s son, the
lovers are trapped and
await the inevitable
conquest of Egypt by the
Romans. When Mark-Anthony
heard the false news that
Cleopatra had committed
suicide, he ended his
ownlife. The Queen of
Egypt, for her part, was
imprisoned shortly
afterwards. The two
lovers remain one of
History’s most
famous couples. This
piece was commissioned by
the Wind Orchestra of the
town of Antony, near
Paris, directedby
Philippe Rossignol, to
mark its 90th
anniversary.
Konin
gin Cleopatra heerste
meer dan twintig jaar
lang over Egypte. Ze is
een van de bekendste
vrouwen uit de oudheid,
vanwege haar relatie met
Julius Caesar en vooral
die met Marcus Antonius,
maar ook omdat de oorzaak
van haardood altijd een
mysterie is gebleven. Dit
werk bestaat uit drie in
elkaar overlopende delen.
Het eerste deel begint
met de levendige
introductie van Marcus
Antonius. Met het
dynamische en enigszins
militaire karakter van de
muziekwordt de Romeinse

Queen
Cleopatra ruled Egypt for
over 20 years. She is one
of antiquity’s
best-known women, in
particular because of her
relationships with Julius
Caesar and, above all,
Mark-Anthony, but also
because the cause of her
death remainsa mystery.
The work is split into
three parts and performed
without breaks. The first
section begins with a
bright introduction
representing
Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in
nature and reminiscent of
military music, this
characterises theRoman
general. But soon after,
another theme emerges,
softer and more melodic,
symbolising
Cleopatra’s
femininity. The two
characters then combine
on a faster tempo. The
middle section of the
work depicts the love
thatMark-Anthony and
Cleopatra feel for each
other. This passionate
relationship lasted ten
years and produced three
children. This is
expressed by a warm and
intense theme, just like
the beauty of the
Egyptian queen. The third
andlast section opens in
a determined and military
mood. Mark-Anthony and
Cleopatra were often
apart, the Roman general
was often away on a
campaign. They met up in
Alexandria to celebrate
their triumph. But, as
the targets of
thejealousy and ambition
of Octavius, Julius
Caesar’s son, the
lovers are trapped and
await the inevitable
conquest of Egypt by the
Romans. When Mark-Anthony
heard the false news that
Cleopatra had committed
suicide, he ended his
ownlife. The Queen of
Egypt, for her part, was
imprisoned shortly
afterwards. The two
lovers remain one of
History’s most
famous couples. This
piece was commissioned by
the Wind Orchestra of the
town of Antony, near
Paris, directedby
Philippe Rossignol, to
mark its 90th
anniversary.

The
Soldier’s Wife
is a short and simple
piece commissioned by the
Singapore Ministry of
Education. It was
originally intended as a
compulsory piece for the
2012 Singapore Youth
Festival. Because many
school bands in Singapore
are incomplete, the
composer was specifically
asked to create a work
that could equally be
played by a limited
ensemble—which
explains various doubled
and optional parts. The
warm tones of a melodic
passage open this short
work: the wife of the
wooden soldier sings a
kind of lullaby. This
lyrical section is
followed by a more
powerful part which is,
however, based on the
same melodic material.
The rhythm, syncopated at
times, infuses
thissection with a
particular energy. The
harmony, too, has some
surprising
turns—and we must
never lose sight of the
restrictions imposed by
the limited level of
difficulty of the piece.
Although the work begins
softly and sweetly, much
more ‘feminine
energy’ is
projected by the close.
The
Soldier’s Wife
is een kort en eenvoudig
werkje dat is geschreven
in opdracht van het
Singaporese ministerie
van Onderwijs. Het was
aanvankelijk bedoeld als
verplicht werk voor het
Singapore Youth Festival
2012. Omdat
veelschoolorkesten in
Singapore een onvolledige
bezetting hebben, kreeg
de componist het
nadrukkelijke verzoek om
het werk zo vorm te geven
dat het ook met een
beperkt ensemble
uitgevoerd kan worden:
dat verklaart een aantal
verdubbelingenen
instrumenten ad
libitum.Een warme,
melodische passage opent
dit korte werkje: de
vrouw van het - houten -
soldaatje zingt als het
ware een wiegeliedje.
Nadat dit lyrische deel
is afgerond, volgt een
energieker gedeeltedat
qua melodisch materiaal
op dezelfde bouwstenen is
gebaseerd. De hier en
daar gesyncopeerde
ritmiek verleent dit deel
een bijzondere energie,
en ook harmonisch zijn er
een paar verrassende
wendingen - waarbij
rekening is gehoudenmet
de beperkingen die
verbonden zijn aan werken
voor dit muzikale niveau.
Begon het werkje zacht en
liefelijk, aan het slot
is er heel wat meer
‘girl power’
voelbaar!
The
Soldier’s Wife
ist ein kurzes, einfaches
Werk, das im Auftrag des
Bildungsministeriums von
Singapur geschrieben
wurde. Es war zunächst
als Pflichtstück
für das Singapurer
Jugendfestival 2012
gedacht. Da viele
Schulblasorchester in
Singapur unvollständig
besetzt sind, bat man den
Komponisten
ausdrücklich, das Werk
so zu gestalten, dass es
auch mit einem begrenzten
Ensemble gespielt werden
könne: Dies erklärt
einige Verdopplungen und
optionale Instrumente.
Eine warm klingende,
melodische Passage
eröffnet dieses kurze
Werk: Die Frau des -
hölzernen- Soldaten
singt eine Art
Wiegenlied. Nach diesem
lyrischen Abschnitt folgt
ein kraftvollerer Teil,
der aber aufdemselben
melodischen Material
aufbaut. Der hier und da
synkopierte Rhythmus
verleiht diesem Teil eine
besondere Energie und
auch harmonisch gibt es
einige überraschende
Wendungen - wobei immer
an die auferlegten
Beschränkungen durch
den Schwierigkeitsgrad
gedacht werden muss. Ist
das Werk zu Beginn noch
leise und lieblich, ist
zum Schluss doch schon
wesentlich mehr weibliche
Energie“
spürbar...!
“Guarda,
è la moglie del
soldato di legnoâ€!
All’inizio, canta
una dolce ninnananna, che
precede una sezione
più potente dai ritmi
sincopati e con
sorprendenti cambiamenti
di armonie. The
Soldier’s Wife
inizia in modo calmo e
dolce per poi trovare
un’energia
tipicamente femminile
verso il finale. The
Soldier’s Wife
è un brano breve e
semplice, perfetto anche
per formazioni a organico
ridotto grazie alle parti
raddoppiate e
opzionali.

and the ghettos of
Eastern Europe, where
itinerant Jewish
troubadours, known as
ââ¬ËklezmorimÃ
¢â¬â¢, had
performed at
celebrations,
particularly weddings,
since the early Middle
Ages. 'Klezmer' is a
Yiddish termcombining the
Hebrew words
ââ¬Ëkleyââ
¬â¢ (instrument)
and
ââ¬Ëzemerââ
¬â¢ (song). The
roots of the style are
found in secular
melodies, popular dances,
Jewish
ââ¬Ëhazanutâ
â¬â¢ (cantorial
music) and also the
ââ¬Ënigunimâ
â¬â¢, the
wordless melodies intoned
bythe
ââ¬ËHasidimâ
â¬â¢ (orthodox
Jews). The melodies used
in the four movements of
A Little Klezmer
Suite have
traditionally been used
in Jewish wedding
ceremonies and
celebrations.
A
Little Klezmer Suite
werd geschreven in
opdracht van de Rushton
Park High School ter
gelegenheid van het
vijftigjarig bestaan van
het blaasorkest van de
school. De
première vond in
oktober 2020 plaats
tijdens een
virtueelonlineconcert.
Klezmermuziek is ontstaan
in de 'sjtetls' (dorpen)
en gettoââ¬â¢s
van Oost-Europa, waar
rondreizende Joodse
troubadours, de zogeheten
klezmorim, sinds de
vroege middeleeuwen
optraden bij feesten, met
name bruiloften.Klezmer
is een Jiddische term
waarin de Hebreeuwse
woorden 'kley'
(instrument) en 'zemer'
(lied) zijn gecombineerd.
De oorsprong van de stijl
is te vinden in
wereldlijke
melodieën,
populaire dansen, de
chazanoet muziek uit
desynagoge met een
voorzanger en de nigunim,
de tekstloze
melodieën die
worden gezongen door de
orthodoxe chassidische
joden. De
melodieën die in
de vier delen van A
Little Klezmer Suite
zijn gebruikt, werden
vanoorsprong ten gehore
gebracht op Joodse
bruiloftsplechtigheden en
huwelijksfeesten.
A Little Klezmer
Suite wurde von der
Rushton Park High School
in Auftrag gegeben, um
den 50. Geburtstag ihres
Blasorchesters zu feiern.
Die Uraufführung
fand im Rahmen eines
virtuellen
Online-Konzerts im
Oktober 2020 statt.Die
Klezmer-Musik entstand in
den sogenannten
Schtetlââ¬Å
(Dörfern) und in
den
osteuropäischen
Ghettos, in denen
fahrende jüdische
Troubadoure, bekannt als
Klezmorimââ¬Å,
seit dem frühen
Mittelalter bei Festen,
insbesondere
beiHochzeiten,
aufgetreten sind.
Klezmerââ¬Å ist
ein jiddischer Begriff,
der die
hebräischen
Wörter
kleyââ¬Å
(Instrument) und
zemerââ¬Å
(Lied) miteinander
kombiniert. Der Ursprung
des Stils liegt in
weltlichen Melodien,
Volkstänzen,jÃ
¼discher
Hazanutââ¬Å
(Kantorenmusik) und in
den Nigunimââ¬Å
Melodien ohne Text, die
von den Chassidim
(orthodoxen Juden)
intoniert wurden. Die
Melodien, die in den vier
Sätzen von A
Little Klezmer Suite
vorkommen,
wurdentraditionell bei
jüdischen
Hochzeitszeremonien und
Feiern
gespielt.
