Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. This three-movement symphony musically depicts the history of Hungary. Key historical figures, wars and other important events from this country inspired all three movements. The first movement depicts Atilla, the King of the Huns, and is characterised by fear, threat and aggression. The second movement focuses on Árpád, the founder of the Hungarian State and the final movement is named after István, the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary. The beautiful theme of the national hymn appears throughout the symphony, however it is often partially hidden. It is used as a “thread, ” hardly recognizable at the beginning, becoming more and more obvious near the end and itconcludes the symphony as the “final apotheosis, ” making the band sound like a majestic living organ. / Niveau : 6 / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

In the final days of November, as the nights grew longer and the vicious North winds began to pound the embattled city, the kingdom was rapidly nearing its darkest hour. As enemy forces threatened from every side, the exhausted council gathered in the great hall for one final desperate meeting. With all hope waning, with all other options exhausted, and with one last chance to save his people, the king summoned all remaining forces and invoked The Seventh Resolution. Par SCHWARZ OTTO M.. Asteroids and comets have played an important role throughout the history of life on earth. It is quite probable that the dinosaurs have been exterminated by an asteroid's impact in the Gulf of Mexico. Huge tidal waves and fire storms wiped out all life. This is the year 2067 according to the Christian calendar. A collision has just taken place in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and caused an asteroid to enter the earth's power of gravitation. It is instoppably approaching the blue planet. As its peoples have been fighting each other continuously, they missed the building of a global defence system against dangers coming from space. A scanner records the asteroid andimmediately sends a message to the President of the Anglo-American Union. The probability that the asteroid will hit the earth is judged 50% by the experts. Plans are made to shoot the celestial body with rockets live with hydrogen bombs or laser guns in order to throw it off its track, but they fail. The asteroid's size seems to threaten the existence of mankind. Those in the know stare at the night sky in bewilderment. Partly based on the hymn tune Laudate Dominum. Par DE HAAN JACOB. This tumultuous composition tells the legend of the town of Zwolle in the Netherlands. In the waters surrounding Zwolle lived a dragon. When it appeared it threatened to destroy the town with it fiery breath if a human sacrifice was not offered. St Michael confronted the dragon in a battle without equal. As a knight armed with a double edged sword the archangel battled against the dragon and decapitated it. Thus the city was saved. To represent the archangel the composer has chosen the hymn tune Laudate Dominum.
