Of Skies,
Rivers, Lakes and
Mountains was
commissioned by the
Northern California Band
Directors' Association to
honour their 50th
Anniversary in 2012. The
first performance was
given by the
Association’s 2012
Honor Band, conducted by
Dr Royce Trevis, in the
Harlen Adams Theater,
California State
University, Chico,
California, on 4th
February that year.The
brief for the commission
asked for a piece that
celebrated the United
States’ natural
resources and composer
Philip Sparke turned to
Katharine Lee
Bates’s lyrics for
the song America the
Beautiful, of which
the first and last verses
are:O beautiful for
spacious skies,For amber
waves of grain,For
purplemountain
majestiesAbove the
fruited plain!America!
America!God shed His
grace on thee,And crown
thy good with
brotherhoodFrom sea to
shining seaThe three
movements each take their
title from these
verses:1. O Beautiful
for Spacious Skies:
Opening with filigree
woodwind figuring, this
movement aims to recreate
the light and lightness
of a spring sky, birds
and blossoms floating on
gentle breezes.2. From
Sea to Shining Sea: A
vivacious celebration of
water bubbling in
streams, rivers and
lakes.3. For Purple
Mountain Majesties: A
slow final movement
representing an
awe-inspiring range of
mountains
Of
Skies, Rivers, Lakes and
Mountains is
geschreven in opdracht
van de Northern
California Band
Directors' Association,
ter gelegenheid van het
vijftigjarig jubileum van
deze organisatie, dat in
2012 werd gevierd. De
première werd op 4
februari van dat jaar
onder leiding van
dirigent Royce Trevis
uitgevoerd door de
Association’s 2012
Honor Band, in het Harlen
Adams Theater, California
State University, Chico,
Californië.De
componist kreeg het
verzoek een werk te
schrijven dat een lofzang
zou zijn op alles wat de
natuur van Verenigde
Staten te bieden heeft.
Philip Sparke gebruikte
de tekst van Katharine
Lee Bates voor de song
America the
Beautiful, waarvan
heteerste en laatste
couplet als volgt
luiden:O beautiful for
spacious skies,For amber
waves of grain,For purple
mountain majestiesAbove
the fruited
plain!America!
America!God shed His
grace on thee,And crown
thy good with
brotherhoodFrom sea to
shining seaDe titels van
de drie delen van de
compositie zijn ontleend
aan deze coupletten:1.
O Beautiful for
Spacious Skies: Dit
deel, dat opent met
verfijnde figuren in het
hout, is een poging om
het licht en de lichtheid
van een lentehemel te
herscheppen, met
vogeltjes en bloesems die
wiegen in een milde
bries.2. From Sea to
Shining Sea: Een
levendige ode aan water
dat stroomt in beken,
rivieren en meren3.
For Purple Mountain
Majesties: Een
langzaam laatste deel
waarin het beeld wordt
opgeroepen van een
indrukwekkende bergketen

With this
composition in a rumba
style, Peter Kleine
Schaars invites us to
enjoy a relaxed sailing
trip in the waters of the
Caribbean. The feeling of
freedom on the boat is
mirrored by an extensive
melody surrounded by a
palette of colourful
harmonies the shades of
the water while the
clever percussion sets
the course of the ship.
Who wouldn’t dream
of such an adventure?
Although the musical
themes and accompaniments
have been constructed
from combinations of
rhythmic cells that occur
less often, the
composition sounds very
natural and flowing.
Assuming the rhythmic
cells 1 to 8 are part of
the basic skills of your
band, in this
composition, the accent
rather lies on cells 9 to
13. The instrumentation
is created in such a way
that these ‘new
cells’ occur in
all parts, so that all
musicians of the band
become familiar with this
rhythmic development.
Met deze
compositie in rumbastijl
neemt Peter Kleine
Schaars ons voor een
relaxte zeiltocht mee
naar de Caribische
wateren. Het vrije gevoel
op de boot wordt
weerspiegeld door een
uitgestrekte melodie te
midden van een palet van
kleurrijke harmonieën
de schakeringen van het
water terwijl de
uitgekiende percussie de
rechte koers van het
schip bepaalt. Wie droomt
er nou niet van
zo’n avontuur?
Hoewel de muzikale
thema’s en
begeleidingen zijn
opgebouwd uit combinaties
van enkele minder vaak
voorkomende ritmische
cellen, klinkt de
compositie heel
natuurlijk en vloeiend.
Ervan uitgaande dat de
ritmische cellen 1 tot en
met 8 tot de
basisvaardigheden van uw
orkest behoren, ligt in
deze compositie de nadruk
vooral op de cellen 9 tot
en met 13. De
instrumentatie is
dusdanig dat deze
‘nieuwe
cellen’ voorkomen
in alle partijen, zodat
alle musici van het
orkest vertrouwd raken
met deze ritmische
ontwikkeling.
Mit
dieser Komposition im
Rumba-Stil lädt uns
Peter Kleine Schaars zu
einem entspannten
Segeltörn in der
Karibik ein. Das
Gefühl der Freiheit an
Bord spiegelt sich in
einer ausgedehnten
Melodie wider, die von
einer Reihe farbiger
Harmonien den Bewegungen
des Wassers umrahmt wird,
während das Schlagzeug
geschickt den Kurs des
Schiffes hält. Wer
träumt nicht von einem
solchen Abenteuer? Obwohl
die musikalischen Themen
und die Begleitung aus
einer Kombination
verschiedener
Rhythmus-Einheiten
bestehen, die nur
vereinzelt vorkommen,
klingt die Komposition
sehr natürlich und
fließend. Da die
Rhythmus-Einheiten 1 bis
8 sicher zu den
Grundfertigkeiten Ihres
Ensembles gehören,
liegt der Schwerpunkt
dieser Komposition eher
auf den
Rhythmus-Einheiten 9 bis
13. Die Instrumentierung
ist so angelegt, dass
diese neuen
Rhythmus-Einheiten“
in allen
Stimmenvorkommen, sodass
alle Orchestermitglieder
mit diesen Rhythmen
vertraut gemacht werden.

and in simple terms tries
to create various cyclic

is: Earth - Metal - Water

earth bears metal, metal
changes to liquid (water)
when heated, water helps
trees grow, wood burns to
create fire, fire
produces ash (earth) and
the cycle continues.I was
particularly interested
in the cycle of
emotions:- Meditation -
Sorrow - Fear - Anger -
Joy - (Meditation) etc.
and thought this cyclic
principle would provide
an effective emotional
journey for a piece of
music. So Five States
of Change has five
equal sections which
loosely characterise this
emotional cycle. I have
tried to make the music
grow organically, with
minimal repetition, and
each movement evolves
from the musical elements
at the end of the
previous one, with the
opening material
appearing, transformed,
at the end of the piece
to complete the cycle.

Nordanvind
is a tour de force
symphonic rhapsody that
is built on three
Scandinavian folk songs.
Composer Carl Strommen
has composed these
Viking-influenced
melodies into a concert
setting that brings out
all of the history of the
Scandinavian people. The
piece is at times bold
and aggressive, at other
times beautiful. Carl
employs all of the
instrumental colors of
the concert band to
create a new work for
more advanced
ensembles. Modern
Scandinavians are
descendants of the
Vikings, an adventuresome
people who were known for
their love of the sea,
their naval prowess, and
as fierce fighters . The
Scandinavian Vikings were
warriors from Denmark,
Norway, and Sweden who
traded, raided and
settled in various parts
of Europe, Russia, the
North Atlantic islands,
and the northeastern
coast of North America
.Starting around 1850,
over one million Swedes
left their homeland for
the United States in
search of religious
freedom and open farm
land . Augustana College
was founded in 1860 by
graduates of Swedish
universities and is
located on the
Mississippi River in Rock
Island, Illinois . Home
of the
“Vikings,â€
Augustana College is the
oldest Swedish- American
institution of higher
learning in the United
States . This powerful
and lively piece takes
inspiration from Swedish
history and from Swedish
folk songs and hymns
.Havsdrake (Dragon of the
Sea)The Nordanvind or
“North Windâ€
blows a cold wind during
a journey of a group of
courageous Viking rowers
. The
“Dragon-shipâ€
or long ships designed
for raiding and war was a
sophisticated, fast ship
able to navigate in very
shallow water . To
musically portray these
magnificent seafaring
vessels, the director is
encouraged to use an
Ocean Drum (or a rain
stick) during the
introduction . Wind
players may consider
blowing air through their
instruments to suggest
the North wind . Adding
men’s voices to
accompany the haunting
low brass and percussive
“rowerâ€
sounds can be helpful in
creating the dark and
ominous portrayal of
Viking adventurers
.Slangpolska efter Byss -
KalleIn Sweden, a
“polska†is a
partner dance where the
dancers spin each other
(släng in Swedish
“to sling or
tossâ€) .
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is attributed to
Byss-Kalle, who was a
notable Swedish folk
musician, specifically a
nyckelharpa player .
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is a traditional
“polskaâ€
dance song most often
played on the Nyckelharpa
or keyed fiddle and is
commonly heard in pubs
and at festive events
throughout Sweden .
Approximately 10,000
nyckelharpa players live
in Sweden today, and the
Swedish and the American
Nyckelharpa Associations
are dedicated to this
Swedish National
instrument . The director
is encouraged to share
video and audio examples
of the nyckelharpa
playing the original
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle .Tryggare Kan Ingen
Vara (Children of the
Heavenly Father)Tryggare
Kan Ingen Vara Is a
traditional Swedish
melody, possibly of
German roots, and was
believed to be arranged
as a hymn by the Swedish
hymn writer, Karolina
Wilhelmina Sandell-Berg
(1832–1903) . As a
daughter of a Swedish
Lutheran minister, she
began writing poems as a
teenager and is said to
have written over 1,700
different texts . There
are two different
accounts as to the
inspiration for this hymn
. The first story is that
Lina (as she was called)
wrote the hymn to honor
her father and to say
thank you to him for
raising her and
protecting her . A second
belief is of her
witnessing the tragic
death of her father . She
and her father were on a
boat, when a wave threw
her father overboard . It
was said that the
profound effect of
watching her father drown

The
last decades we humans
have witnessed a
significant number of
disturbing developments.
If we look at the direct
and persistent
destructive influence of
humans on nature: air and
water quality are
reducing, soils are
depleting, crops are
short of pollinators,
coasts are less protected
from storms,
deforestation, the
degradation of land, loss
of biodiversity and
pollution. In stark
contrast we find the
intelligence and
boundless creativity of
humans: what about all
the high technological
advancements? What lies
ahead in the realm of
Artificial Intelligence?
Will we let machines make
human decisions? What
ethical issues arise
there? This composition
reflects the desperation
and urgency of the human
need for action. The
music draws inspiration
from the brutal natural
forces that ravage our
world as a direct
consequence of human
failure and selfishness.
Are we heading towards a
'Judgment Day'? Or will
humanity find a way to
reverse negative trends
towards a more livable,
peaceful, and joyful
environment for humans,
animals, and nature? To
underscore this message,
composer Peter Knockaert
opted for a highly
classical idiom that has
been used by many
composers in classical
music: the 'Dies Irae'.
Traditionally, the Dies
Irae is the third part of
a requiem (funeral mass).
The text used in
'Judgment DayÂ? (for
optional choir) is coming
from the original Latin
text.

Great Britain
has had a National Youth
Brass Band since 1952,
which caters for players
between the ages of 12
and 18 and has produced
many outstanding
instrumentalists in its
distiguished history. An
exciting development took
place in July 2004 when
the first summer course
of a new National
Children's Brass Band of
Great Britain, for
players between the ages
of 8 and 13, was held in
Bromsgrove, Worcester.
Renowned cornet soloist
and conductor Lynda
Nicholson was appointed
music director and she
commissioned Philip
Sparke to write a piece
for this inaugural
course. The Pioneers was
the result. The title
refers to the fact that
the NCBBGB was starting
out on a new adventure
but is also a salute to
the bicentenary of an
expedition by two of the
composer's heroes -
Meriwether Lewis and
William Clark. They were
commissioned by US
President Thomas
Jefferson to find the
headwaters of the
Mississippi and a route
to the Pacific following
the Louisiana Purchase in
1803, which doubled the
size of USA. They set
out, as the “Corps
of Discovery,” from
Louisville, Kentucky, in
May 1804; not only did
they succeed in reaching
the Pacific through
hostile territory, but
also found their way back
- in three years! The
piece is not descriptive
of the journey but gives
the composer the
opportunity to celebrate
the 200th anniversary of
this amazing feat.
