Trained as
a violinist in his native
Tehran, composer Behzad
Ranjbaran eagerly drew
inspiration from the
traditional Persian
kamancheh and its
delicate, lyrical sound
when creating his
profoundly luscious and
brilliant Concerto for
Violin and Orchestra.
This work was completed
in 1994 and premiered in
England by Joshua Bell,
who also gave the first
American and Canadian
performances. The
Concerto for Violin and
Orchestra is the
recipient of the Rudolf
Nissim Award from ASCAP,
and it was supported in
part by a grant from The
National Endowment for
the Arts. The solo part
with a piano reduction as
well as a large score are
available on custom
print. For advanced
players. Duration:
31'. From my early
years studying violin at
the Tehran Music
Conservatory, I was
captivated by the sound
of the kamancheh, an
ancient Persian bowed
instrument considered one
of the ancestors to the
modern violin. I was
pleased when the National
Endowment for the Arts
awarded me a grant to
write a violin concerto
as it provided me with an
occasion to rekindle my
fascination with the
kamancheh. The notionof
writing a violin concerto
that would incorporate
the power and brilliance
of a modern instrument
with the delicate and
lyrical character of an
ancient one was simply
irresistible. Moreover,
the inspiration from the
kamancheh also informed
my use of Persian modes,
melodic, and rhythmic
figures.The notes of the
violin’s open
strings (G, D, A, E) also
influenced many of the
melodic and harmonic
elements of my violin
concerto. The opening
tutti is mostly based on
intervals of a perfect
4th and 5th. The primary
material for each
movement incorporates
notes of two of the open
strings of the violin,
creating a three-note
melodic motif as the
basis of themes:1 st
movement: A-D-A2nd
movement: D-G-D3rd
movement: E-A-EThe
overall structure of the
concerto is organic and
cyclical, as themes are
shared between the three
movements. For example,
the main musical idea of
the third movement is a
transformation of the
first movement’s
primary theme. While the
movements share similar
musical materials, each
one is definedby
distinguishing
characters. The first
movement is conflicted;
alternating between
sections of unabashed
lyricism and
unforgivingferocity. The
second movement is
haunting, mysterious, and
expressive with long
melodic lines that vary
continuously. It moves
through different moods
and characters including
a reimagining of a
traditional Persian
wedding tune played by
the orchestra (m. 98).
The third movement is
festive in character and
features much brilliant
passagework for the solo
violin. At the climax of
this movement, themes
fromthe previous
movements re-emerge
simultaneously with
greater intensity,
propelling the concerto
to an energetic finale.
The Concerto was composed
in 1994 and is dedicated
to Joshua Bell.

evoke the sounds of

inspired by Ayn Rand's

Castl
e Creek was written by
Dan Welcher in
celebration of the Aspen
Music Festival's 40th
anniversary, and served
as a special tribute to
the Festival's longtime
President, Gordon Hardy.
Castle Creek itself is a
tributary of the Roaring
Fork River on which the
Aspen Music Festival
campus (as well as
Hardy's home) is built.
Gordon's initials
(G.A.H.) are used as the
musical basis for the
fanfare, which is
centered on the ascending
pitches G, A and B, and
reflects the upward
motion and positivity of
the Aspen Music Festival
itself. For advanced
players. Duration:
5'. Program Note by
the ComposerThere is no
“secret
program†or hidden
meaning in this lively,
five-minute work: it was
intended as a celebration
of the 40th anniversary
of the Aspen Music
Festival, and as a
special tribute to the
Festival’s
longtime President,
Gordon Hardy. The title
CASTLE CREEK refers to a
tributary of the Roaring
Fork River on which the
Aspen Music Festival
campus (as well as Mr.
Hardy’s home) is
built.The work pays
homage to Gordon Hardy by
utilizing his initials
(“G.A.H.â€) as
a musical motive: the
three letters correspond
to the pitches G, A, and
B). This three-note group
forms the basis of the
fanfare that opens the
work, and it also serves
as an ostinato, a bass
line, and a general means
of organizing the
work’s tonal
centers. Because the
three notes are in
ascending order, the
ever-upward direction of
the Aspen Music Festival
and the positive energy
of Gordon Hardy are
readily evident.The
athletic fanfare that
begins the work (marked
“noble, but
energeticâ€) is
scored for brass and
percussion alone, and may
be played as a separate
piece. The rest of the
ensemble joins at the
conclusion of the
fanfare, and a spirited
tune in 9/8 issues from
the woodwinds. After this
is given a thorough
workout, a middle section
in faster 3/4 time
provides machine-like
energy. Perhaps it is the
energy of the Festival,
in high gear. At the
height of this, the music
of the fanfare returns in
broad open notes in the
brass, with the machine
still pulsing in support.
The overture ends in a
burst of motion, with the
three-note motive in its
highest transposition.My
colleague and former
student Paul Bissell made
this excellent
transcription from the
orchestral original.

TINY TATTOO
was written after the
composer visited a
“treetopâ€
bistro at Big Sur,
California. The
restaurant is named
Nepenthe, after an
ancient Greek elixir
fabled to relieve any and
all sorrows. This
spot-on-the-cliff made
such an impression on
Pann that musical ideas
immediately started
flowing, giving rise to
the opening hook of this
5-minute orchestral work.
Written as a gift to
conductor Alastair
Willis, TINY TATTOO is a
highly catchy and
colorful work with
exciting percussion
parts, equally suitable
for advanced student
orchestras, professional
ensembles, and everything
in between. TINY
TATTOO (2017) was written
after visiting a
“treetopâ€

California with my wife
after driving the entire
day up from L.A. The
restaurant is called
“Nepenthe,â€
named after an ancient
Greek elixir fabled to
relieve one from any and
all sorrows. This
spot-on-the-cliff made
such an impression on me
(in my exhausted state)
that I immediately began
humming the opening
minimal hook in what is
now this piece. Any
well-known excerpts

work are happy

Roger Zare
is living every young
composer's dream. At a
tender age, he has
already been lauded by
the best, and his
compositions continue to
earn awards. Green Flash,
his first publication
with Theodore Presser
Company, was written in
2007 for the USC Thornton
Symphony, received a BMI
Student Composer award in
2007, was chosen to be
read at the 2008 American
Composers Orchestra
Underwood New Music
Readings, won the ASCAP
Rudolf Nissim Prize in
2009, and has now won the
2012 Symphony in C Young
Composers' Competition.
For more about Green
Flash and a YouTube video
of the premiere
performance, see the
composer's website
(www.rogerzare.com/greenf
lash.htm). A
“green flashâ€
is a rare atmospheric
phenomenon that occurs as
a sunset reaches its end.
If conditions are just
right, then a spark of
green will hover on the
horizon for a fleeting
moment as the sun
disappears. I first
witnessed this subtle
effect in Florida in
2005. Seeing the mythical
event for the first time
inspiredthis composition.
Green Flash is a musical
journey from daybreak to
sunset. It focuses on the
manipulation of colors
and textures throughout
its five sections. The
musical events are
designed to paint a
picture of various scenes
during the day. The piece
begins with the heartbeat
of the world emerging
from the silentdarkness
of the night. As night
transitions to dawn,
waves of color propagate
from the repeating low C,
building up through the
harmonic series to become
the vibrant colors of
sunrise. Eventually all
twelve notes of the
chromatic scale are
sounding together.
Abruptly, a morning fog
engulfs the scene. Out of
the mist rises the only
melodic theme in the
work, played by a solo
English horn, and later
taken up by other solo
winds. Once the fog
dissipates, the sky fills
with the playful dance of
wispy cirrus clouds. A
rainbow-like halo
surrounds the sun, adding
a burst of color to the
scene. This carefree,
optimistic cloud dance is
invaded by a menacing
front of cumulonimbus
clouds. A storm rages at
a frantic pace, but in
its dying breath yields
the most glorious of
sunsets. Only as the last
glint of sunlight
disappears below the
horizon, a faint sparkle
of green lingers in the
atmosphere.
