this piece. It is crucial

passages. At m. 87 during
the second time through,
I have made the tempo
jump to 152. Feel free to
take it faster if your

Jacob de Haan
was commissioned to
compose this concert
piece by the St. Peters
Wind Symphony from
Brisbane, Australia. Ross
Roy is the monumental
late 19th century villa
where St. Peters Lutheran
College was founded in
1945. The villa has
always remained the
school symbol. In this
composition, Jacob de
Haan sees the Ross Roy as
a metaphor for the years
spent at school (a
monument in time), where
one's personality is
formed. So, the opening
theme the artist calls
the Ross Roy theme
initially has monumental
characteristics.The
rhythmic motion, which
strides along in the
lower register and
percussion at the
beginning of the next
section is typical of
Tempo di Marcia.
Thismovement, accompanied
by repetitions of sound,
is a metaphor for the
structure and discipline
in school. This is the
introduction to a march
theme, symbolic of
passing through the
classes up to the final
examinations.Then, the
Ross Roy theme is dealt
with again, now in a
playful, humorous
variation. As if the
composer is saying there
should also be time for a
smile in school. The same
theme can be heard in
major key and a slower
tempo in the following
section, expressing pride
and self-confidence. This
is also the introduction
to the expressive middle
section that represents
love, friendship and
understanding.We then
return to the march theme
in a slightly altered
construction. The
oriental sounds,
constituting the
modulation to the final
theme, are symbols of the
diversity of cultures in
the school. The
characteristic final
theme first sounds
solemn, but turns into a
festive apotheosis. It is
no coincidence that the
final cadence is
reminiscent of the close
to a traditional
overture, for the school
years can be considered
the overture to the rest
of one's life. The
premiere of Ross Roy was
conducted by Jacob de
Haan in Brisbane, on
August 22, 1997.

In 1972, I
wrote a Sonata for Two
Pianos for two friends
who were piano teachers
at Wellington College.
When in 1995 I was asked
to write a work for wind
band, I returned to this
Sonata and have
re-arranged and in the
new version renamed it
Fantasy Triptych. There
are three movements: 1.
Le Tombeau d'Arthur
Benjamin Ravel wrote 'Le
Tombeau de Couperin,'
Arthur Benjamin wrote 'Le
Tombeau de Ravel' and so
the temptation to write
'Le Tombeau d'Arthur
Benjamin' was
overwhelming. At the end
of the movement there is
an oblique reference to
Benjamin's own 'Jamaican
Rumba' which accompanies
a quote from an old
Spanish folk song 'Loro,
enciende el hervidor de
agua.' 2. Mr. Bolt goes
for a ride in his motor
car, and Monsieur Ravel
turns in his grave. The
movement is dedicated to
an old friend, Geoffrey
Bolt, who adores the
music of Ravel. but at
the time of writing was
learning to drive. He
always described his
vehicle as a motor car.
To describe him as an
impatient motorist would
be a gross
understatement. The
refined suavity of
Ravel's music was in
complete contrast to
these early
manifestations of road
rage, hence the central
angry outburst. 3. The
War March of the
Ostriches The music of
Charles Ives was
fascinating me at the
time of writing this
movement and some of the
influence has rubbed off
in this rondo-like march.
At the end there is a
quote from the very
beginning of the first
movement. The title was
inspired by the amusing
antics of a group of
ostriches during a visit
to Bristol Zoo.

of chorales for warm-ups,
which are organized
according to the criteria
that he considers most
effective. While working
on his60 Warm-up Chorales
for Concert Band, Franco
Cesarini has always borne
in mind that amateur
musicians play for
pleasure. He feels that
it is extremely important
that they have
satisfaction at every
moment of the rehearsal
and not to start the
rehearsal with needless
“punishingâ€
exercises. Nobody is
really motivated to start
playing with scales, long
notes, or tricky
rhythmical exercises.
There is often a
distinguished absentee in
band rehearsals, namely
music itself! Although
this publication does not
foresee a specific tempo
for the chorales, they
should often be performed
rather slowly but without
dragging. Dynamics are
not indicated, so that
the conductor has the
opportunity to draw the
attention of the
musicians to his gestures
and to make them react
according to his
indications. Timpani and
bell parts have been
added with the aim of not
leaving the
percussionists completely
inactive during the
warm-up phase, but can
also be omitted. The
chorales are written in
four parts (SATB) and are
also playable in smaller
groups. The four voices
can be played in
different combinations of
woodwinds or brass
quartets or in mixed
combinations. The
collection includes ten
chorales for the
following keys: D flat
major, A flat major, E
flat major, B flat major,
F major and C major. With
his 60 Warm-up Chorales
Franco Cesarini would
like to convey the
message to play the
chorales in a musical
way, thus raising the

Stories, sagas
and legends--who among us
doesn't know them? Always
delivered with a tinge of
brutality, these
cautionary tales are a
legacy of moral education
from times past:
inquisitive children
alone in the forest are
generally eaten by a
witch; the
“Soup-Kasperâ€
of Hoffmann's
Struwwelpeter dies from
starvation rather than
eating his soup; anyone
letting in strangers
usually gets devoured;
anyone who plays with
matches gets burned; and
thumb-suckers get their
thumbs cut off. The list
of unfortunate demises is
almost endless.In the
tale of The Pied Piper of
Hamelin, parents lose
their children through
greed, ridicule, scorn
and a failure to
appreciate art. There is
still a street in the
town of Hamelin in which
neither drumming nor
playing has not been
allowed since 130
children disappeared into
a mountain, never to be
seen again. This
composition by Otto M.
Schwarz opens with
exactly this scene,
taking us back to the
year 1284. As in many
towns at the time,
Hamelin in Germany
suffered with hygiene
problems--rats and mice
began to multiply
rapidly, and the town was
overrun with the plague.
There appeared a man
dressed in colorful
clothes who promised the
locals to free them from
this burden. They agreed
and settled on a fee.
Then the man pulled out a
pipe and began to play.
When the rats and mice
heard this, they followed
him. He led the animals
into the Weser River,
where they all drowned.
Back in town, the people
refused to pay him. They
didn't recognize this
man's skills and
knowledge and were only
prepared to pay for
simple labour. A pact
with the devil was made,
which led to the Pied
Piper leaving the town in
a furious rage. One
Sunday, when many people
were at church, he
returned, took out his
flute and began to play.
The town's children were
so enchanted by his
playing that they
followed him. He led them
out of the town and
disappeared with them
forever into a mountain.
Of all the children, only
two survived--however one
was mute, and one was
blind. In the street from
which the children left
Hamelin, music may no
longer be played in
memory of this event.

ensemble hinting at the
programmatic leitmotifs
of Wagner. Every section
of the ensemble gets a
workout in this
delightful 10-minute
work.
A Symphonic
Sketch for Concert Band.
The resurgence of
interest in George
Lloyd's music must give
us faith that such talent
will ultimately prevail
against sometimes unhappy
circumstances. Lloyd was
Cornish and showed
precocious gifts at an
early age - he had
completed his first
symphony by the age of
nineteen. During the
1930s he completed two
operas, one of which -
The Serf - was produced
at Covent Garden in 1938.
He was set for a
glittering career as a
composer. The Second
World War intervened and
he was invalidad out of
the Navy in a
shell-shocked state, and
having written very
little serious music
since 1937 went to
Switzerland to
recuperate, looked after
by his wife, Nancy.
Painfully, he began
writing again -
symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 -
and then returned to
England. He needed to
earn a living and he set
up a mushroom farm in
Dorset. But slowly he
began to compose again
and drafted more
symphonies in short
score. By this time he
was virtually unknown -
despite being considered
the equal of Walton,
Britten, and other young
stars of English music
some 30 years earlier.
Lloyd decided to embark
on a series of recordings
of his symphonies, and
slowly popular acclaim
enabled him to regain his
position. The Forest of
Arden was written in 1987
as a result of a
commission by the
Solihull Youth Wind Band.
Although Lloyd's music
feels instinctively
written one should not be
misled - it is carefully
crafted, but the craft
and structure are always
subordinated to create a
flow with a strongly
melodic content. Instead
of two or three themes,
The Forest of Arden
contains an abundance of
ideas which can be
described in two groups.
The first group contains
the opening rhythmic
motif, quickly developed
into a short rising
quaver passage in the
woodwinds, and later then
a chromatic ostinato bass
- only 8 bars at this
stage but later expanded.
The second group is broad
and expansive, initially
based on intervals of
rising fifths introduced
by euphonium, tubas, and
baritone saxophone,
immediately echoed by
horns. Low brass and
winds expand the theme
into rising sixths and
octaves. There is a hint
of development, bit this
is arrested as the music
moves to a piu tranquillo
section introduced by the
alto saxophone which
further develops the
rising sixth theme. There
follows a true
development of the
opening material,
starting with the
ostinato bass and
gradually passing through
different tonal centers
until the rising fifths
of the second theme group
are heralded - fortissimo
and poco piu largamente
shortly before the end.
The structure is almost
Wagnerian (albeit on a
much smaller scale), with
themes being used as
leitmotifs, but this is
music which, even within
the space of ten minutes
is conceived on a grand
design.

made to wonder which

to be made. After the
introduction the first
steps on the path of life
are taken, still somewhat
unsteadily (the 3/4th
time used illustrates
this uncertainty).
However, the child has
now set off and will meet
the future with an open
mind, unafraid, even
though experience will
teach it how easily it
can be
hurt. Fortunately, it
is sometimes allowed to
be vulnerable and it
discovers there will
always be someone to
offer shelter,support and
love. (Adagio) The
last part breathes a far
greater independence.
Youth is able to face the
future, it can even take
on the whole world!
