Par TCHAIKOVSKI PIOTR ILITCH / JONES NATHAN (Arr.). Tchaikovsky composed his twelve character pieces for piano, The Seasons, while he was writing his popular ballet, Swan Lake. Each piece in The Seasons depicts a different month of the year in Russia. The original publication of September: The Hunt included an epigraph at the start of the piece-a small poem by Alexander Pushkin. This energetic arrangement for symphonic band by Nathan Jones opens with an octave fanfare between the winds and brass. Tchaikovsky\'s colorful harmony speaks here, with passing chromaticism adding color to the music. The fanfare theme is transformed in the quiet central section, still shifting to the minor mode with short solo passages for flute, bassoon, trumpet, xylophone and oboe (cued in flutes). The segue back into the opening fanfare is clever, with the notes leading through several keys before concluding in the major with a short reprise of the initial theme. / Date parution : 2022-09-20/ Répertoire / Concert Band

Par SPARKE PHILIP. The White Rose was commissioned by the White Rose Concert Band from Harrogate, England. The band takes its name from the county symbol of Yorkshire, the white rose. This partly rhythmic, party lyrical piece opens with a flourish from the trumpets. Par SPARKE PHILIP. To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor. The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer’s aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one. After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after ashort bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax. An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

This new beginning band piece by Mike Hannickel honors all the brilliant and dedicated space visionaries who stayed here on Earth, but whose efforts made space exploration a reality. The simplest of rhythms, careful scoring and easily achieved instrument ranges are hallmarks of the Curnow Music Press Great Foundations Series, which is carefully designed to get your beginning band off to an exciting start. This composition limits the upper brass range to a sixth, while the low brass parts encompass a range of only a fifth. The basicflute part avoids difficult finger combinations, and an optional “advanced” flute part (playable simultaneously with the easier part) gives those who are progressing more rapidly a bit more challenge.
