A lot is known
about the American
composer Leroy Anderson.
This son of Swedish
immigrants played the

soulful and calm work
that leaves plenty of

musicians’ and
listeners’ own
thoughts. This set
includes optional parts

The
1818 publication of
Francis Johnson's A
Collection of New
Cotillions marks the
first known publication
of original music by a
black composer in the
United States. A prolific
composer,
instrumentalist, teacher
and conductor, Johnson
led a varied and
successful career in an
era in U.S. history that
was not inviting to black
professionals. His
musical interests ranged
from the contemporary
works of Johann Strauss
Jr. to traditional,
popular
dances.
The
cotillion is a French
country dance that was
popular in Europe and
America in the 18th
century. It was
originally danced by four
couples in square
formation and was an
important influence in
the development of the
square dance in the
United States. Francis
Johnson composed two sets
of six piano
accompaniments for this
dance. The original 1818
publication even included
movement instructions for
the eight dancers. The
short and charming
melodies that he composed
are a fitting example of
popular dance music of
the time.
This
transcription may be
performed as a piano
solo, with the piano as a
non-solistic instrument
within the ensemble or
without piano at all. If
it is to be a piano solo,

The Cuban
composer and pianist
Ernesto Lecuona
(1896-1963) wrote many
works labelled as
Afro-Cuban, and sorting
them all can be
difficult. While some are
lost and others are
scattered about, the 1930
piano suite titled Danzas
Afro-Cubanas, a
collection of six of the
dances, remains a core
group in the style. La
Comparsa (Carnival
Procession) is the sixth
dance in the suite, and
it is based on the
traditional parade and
ceremony that occurs
during Carnival season in
Cuba. This composition
starts with the gradual
approach of the
procession and carries
one through all the
excitement until the last
faint notes of the
departing parade die away
in the distance. This
version for full
orchestra has been
arranged by Morton Gould
(1913-1996).

When writing
his tuba concerto, Philip
Sparke wanted to create a
work which explored the
many aspects of the
instrument’s
technical and vocal
qualities but without
resorting to caricature.
The result is a concerto
in two joined movements,
which can both be
programmed individually,
that contains both many
lyrical lines together
with stunning virtuosic
passages. An outstanding
concerto that tuba
players and brass band
audiences alike will
enjoy and
applaud.

Sparke schuf mit seinem
Tuba Concerto ganz
bewusst ein Stück, das
der Tuba als
Soloinstrument voll und
ganz gerecht wird. Aus
diesem Grund deckt die
Solostimme fast
dreieinhalb Oktaven ab
und nutzt die technischen
und klanglichen
Qualitäten des
Instruments voll und ganz
aus. Das Konzert besteht
aus zwei
zusammenhängenden
Sätzen, die beide
einzeln aufgeführt
werden können: einem
langsamen Satz und einem
Scherzo. Noten für
eine Aufführung mit
Tuba und Klavier sind
ebenfalls
erhältlich.
