The
title, Aerius, is a Latin
term meaning
“soaring†or
“rising
aloftâ€. This
piece is signature Carl
Strommen at his best. The
piece begins with a lush
brass chorale that is
developed before leading
to an energetic presto
section. The
composition comes full
circle and finishes with
a majestic return of the
chorale material from the
opening. A welcome
addition to the
repertoire. The
title Aerius is a
Latin term meaning
“soaring†or
“rising

students chose this title
to signify the forward
momentum and overall
journey of their time in
the high school band
program. With new events
and performances, and a
first time commissioning
a work, this piece
signifies the great
strides the band has made
in recent years.The
opening brass chorale
section should be played
very connected, observing
the two-measure phrasing
and breathing as one
cohesive unit. The Presto
section at m. 25 should
be taken between 165-170
bpm. the vibraphone
soloist should use
medium-hard mallets with
the pedal on. The
sustained notes at m. 41
should be played way
under the upper woodwinds
to get the greatest
effect as it builds in
volume and intensity in
m. 49, and again into m.
57.At m. 69, the
percussion must sustain
the pulse to the
conductor’s tempo,
careful not to add
accents they’re
hearing among the other
sections. After the
ritardando in m. 83, push
the tempo at m. 85
slightly to where the
woodwinds feel
comfortable playing the
triplet figure with
appropriate breathing and
phrasing.- Andrew Monsen,

Solar
Flare, by Tyler Arcari,
depicts the huge
explosion on the Sun that
appears as a sudden
bright flash. The piece
incorporates a whirlwind
of mixed meters to?depict
this phenomenon. Arcari
showcases his fresh,
exciting, and well-scored
compositional style in
this piece. Solar Flare
makes for? an excellent
concert opener. A
solar
flare is a huge
explosion on the sun that
appears as a sudden
increase in brightness or
flash. Sometimes these
explosions push large
amounts of energy and
even parts of the sun
flying out into space.
These events can be so
powerful that they cause
events on Earth such as
auroras, as well as more
serious issues like
disrupting radio and
electronic instruments.
To our naked eye, these
dangerous explosions are
beautiful and quiet. The
celestial is a
fascinating place,
hopefully captured in
some small part by this
work. About the
Work:Solar
Flare began
as a piece with two
goals: to write a space
piece in 7/8 and to write
a teaching 7/8 space
piece. The piece uses a
2-2-3 pattern, so using
this in pre-performance
warm-ups might be
beneficial. The piece is
loosely based on a minor
second descending to a
minor third. This motif
is used at the onset of
the piece in the mallet
percussion and then again
in the woodwinds. The
melody presents itself at
m. 19 in the clarinets.
This melodic material is
varied and traded
throughout the instrument
groups until m.67.
Measures 6972 should be
treated as a transitional
fanfare to the new
material at m. 73.
Measures 99115 to the end
of the piece feature a
style similar to the
beginning that helps to
transition to m. 115,
which is the climax of
the work. An ostinato
pattern (2-2-3) is
presented with fragments
of the melody appearing
in the alto voices. This
momentum culminates in a
large, abrasive area at
m. 125 where the
suspension-resolution in
the brass and horn
melodic fragment need to
be the focus. This
momentum continuously
grows until the last note
where we resolve finally.
Care should be taken that
the ^ accent on the final
note is one meant to be
played heavy, and not
short. A solar

A Certain
Slant of Light is
inspired by the
introspective
mood created by the
rays of light on a dark
cloudy day. A
colorful, murmuring
introduction is followed
by a rich main theme in a
minor key. It is a
well-scored and
fresh-sounding piece that
will help young bands
enhance their
musicality. Rays of
light against the dark of
a cloudy day, or these
same rays of light as
they penetrate a dark
room in late afternoon
can create a mood of
introspection and make us
pause to reflect on the
nature of life, loss and
hope. A Certain Slant of
Light is inspired by the
title, but does not
depict the actual
poem There is a
Certain Slant of
Light by Emily
Dickinson.A Certain Slant
of Light opens with a
colorful murmuring
introduction followed
immediately by a
statement of the main
theme of the piece. The
opening briefly returns,
followed by a setting of
the melody in flute with
woodwind accompaniment.
The opening then returns
and grows to a climax
built on variations of
the main theme. The piece
fades to silence with a
soft echo of the opening
murmuring material.I
enjoyed writing this
piece and hope your
students will enjoy
playing these contrasting
styles and that you will
find the piece beneficial
in teaching important
musical concepts.Peter

A
contrast between heroic
trumpet melodies and
lyrical woodwind lines
highlight this effective
new composition from Alan
Lee Silva. Bands will
sound their best and love
doing it with this
distinctive new piece
that is suitable for
concert or
contest. Staccato
brass figures along with
woodwind trills and runs
highlight the powerful
opening of Legend of the
Lake. The trumpet states
the heroic main theme at
m. 10. The dynamics
soften in m. 18 for a
lyrical flute solo,
playing the B-melody. The
full woodwind section is
featured at m. 26 in a
reprise of the B-melody.
The trumpets proclaim the
A-melody again at m. 34
with full band
accompaniment, plus
woodwind fills and
background lines. The
interlude at m. 42
features each section of
the band independently as
well as the entire
ensemble in concerted
rhythms.The reiteration
of the introduction
material at m. 49 builds
to a slow maestoso
treatment of the A-theme.
A short contrapuntal
interlude, featuring
woodwinds at m. 61, leads
to an ending statement
with the complete group
at m. 66. Measure 68 is a
percussion feature that
builds to the explosive
final tonic chord and
staccato unison
ending.

Arachnophobia and Fugue

light articulation,
chorale-style sections,

throughout the
piece. Good music

First and foremost this
is educational music
exposing kids to the
Baroque style of music.
Dramatic dynamic

the basis for the work.
Toccata and Fugue in D

Little Fugue in G Minor,
Sheep May Safely Graze,
Dies Irae, and Come Sweet

this look into an
imaginary situation with
the Great Baroque Master.

part†overwhelm
another and keep the
texture evenly balanced.
 A second, broader
presentation of the
B-section occurs at m. 90
and leads to a subdued
C-section at m. 100 with
new melodic material
presented in the trumpet.
A whimsical march-like
section pushes to the
return of the
introductory motor
material at m. 131. A
final heroic presentation
of the main thematic
material results in a
somewhat ambiguous coda,
which brings the piece to
a dramatic
conclusion.

From
the call of the open seas
to the wistful dance
section, this piece will
open the imagination of
your students and
audiences. Â Very
playable by young bands,
the piece features a
short opening ostinato
that develops into a tone
cluster and leads to
the ominous sounds of the
brass and percussion,
which depict the slow
lumbering ship on the
dangerous, open waters.
The piece continues
through a more lyrical
second section before a
dramatic return of the
opening material to close
out this contest/festival
style piece. From the
call of the open seas to
the wistful dance
section, this piece will
open the imagination of
your students and
audiences. Very playable
by young bands, the piece
features a short opening
ostinato that develops
into a tone cluster. This
leads to the ominous
sounds of the brass and
percussion, which depict
the slow lumbering ship
on the dangerous, open
waters. After a quickly
paced melody in the low
register for the
clarinets, the piece
gives way to an exciting
tutti section that
features horns and saxes
on an answering
countermelody.The second
section is a dance that
starts with low reeds and
a flute solo, but
develops into a full band
Spanish-sounding dance,
with melody in many
different places. The
recap is a reverse of the
beginning section and
again loosely represents
the danger of life on the
high seas.The short
ostinato that is used at
the beginning and in some
transitional moments is
based on the beginning
notes of Irish Tune from
County Derry, a favorite
of J. C. Sykes, who this
piece honors. Mr. Sykes
gave a lifetime to
teaching music to band
students in North
Carolina. The first four
notes in clarinet 1, the
first four in flute 1 and
the first four in
clarinet 2 make up the
first phrase from that
beautiful melody. Just
something to get students
thinking about
composition in a new
way.

In the
Odyssey, dreams come into
the world through one of
two gates. If they come
through the gates of
ivory they are false
dreams. However, if they
come into the world
through the gates of horn
they are true dreams that
tell the user of things
to be, or illuminate
truth. The Gates of Horn
is a dramatic piece for
band that alternates a
syncopated fanfare with a
bold, yet lyrical theme.
These contrasting ideas
chase each other
throughout the piece.

Rainb
ow in the Clouds is
based on an old
traditional spiritual,
possibly an
African-American song
from the 19th century,
entitled God Put a
Rainbow in the
Clouds. Composer
Carol Brittin Chambers
was inspired by poetic
Maya Angelou to create of
setting of this beautiful
song. It is lush and
beautiful throughout and
will highlight the
musicianship of your
students. This would
serve as a welcome change
of pace piece on your
program for concert or
contest. Rainbow in
the Clouds was
commissioned by the
Pflugerville Middle
School Wind Ensemble in
Pflugerville, Texas,
directed by Shauna
Satrom. The piece
premiered in May 2017, in
memory and celebration of
Luis Ham, who was an
Assistant Principal at
Pflugerville Middle
School.This piece is
based on an old
traditional spiritual,
possibly an
African-American song
from the nineteenth
century, entitled God Put
a Rainbow in the Clouds.
The first time I heard
reference to this song
was in a Maya Angelou
video, in which she sings
a portion of it:
“When it looked
like the sun
wouldn’t shine
anymore, Oh, God put a
rainbow in the
clouds.†In the
video, Dr. Angelou honors
those who have
demonstrated kindness to
her in the past, and she
suggests that we all try
to be a blessing to
others. The Pflugerville
community believed that
Mr. Ham, with his
positive outlook, was
definitely a
“rainbow in the
clouds†for other
people.The piece begins
with a full ensemble
introduction, followed by
a woodwind treatment of
the first verse with a
fairly reserved tempo and
straight eighth-note
rhythm. When brass pick
up the melody on the
second phrase, we start
to hear the song more
like the original
spiritual, with
dotted-eighth, sixteenth
rhythms. The middle
section of the piece at
m. 22 begins to move at a
slightly quicker tempo,
and the mood becomes
lighter. This section
becomes a
call-and-response between
a euphonium solo and
upper woodwinds. The
final section of the
piece involves everyone
playing together joyously
and full, eventually
winding down with two
more solo statements in
flute and euphonium.Note

piece to introduce or
