Strauss (1864-1949)
originally wrote this
work for solo piano and
orchestra under the title
Scherzo in D minor in
1886 for conductor and
pianist Hans von
Bülow, a large
influence on Strauss'
career. Von Bülow,
however, consider the
work a complicated piece
of nonsense and wanted
nothing to do it.
Discouraged, Strauss set
the work aside until
1889, when he met
Scottish pianist Eugen
d'Albert, who liked it
while also suggesting
some changes. With a new
title, Burleske, and a
dedication to d'Albert,
the work was premiered on
June 21st, 1890 in
Eisenach at the
Tonkünstlerfest with
d'Albert at the piano and
Strauss conducting.
Despite this, Strauss
remained convinced that
the work lacked merit and
refused to have the work
published until 1894,
although it eventually
became one of his
favorite works. Strauss
never gave the work an
opus number, but many
consider it to be Op. 11,
which is actually
assigned to his Horn
Concerto No. 1 in E-flat.

Beethoven's. The one by

the most seductive, was
written by Max Bruch. But
the most inward, the
heart's jewel, is
Mendelssohn's.

Grainger finalized this
setting in spring 1918,

sheet music broke
publishing records and
brought in the sort of
steady income that is the
envy of composers
everywhere. While he used
the funds to subsidize
the careers of many
fellow artists, Grainger
became so identified with
this rather lightweight
piece that he came to
despise it. Publisher G.
Schirmer, wishing to
capitalize on the
popularity of Country
Gardens, assigned Adolf
Schmid, one of their
in-house writers, to
create this excellent
orchestral version
published in 1925. Schmid
was an Austrian-American
composer of some stature
who, as a staff writer
for the firm G. Schirmer,
created orchestral
versions of Grainger's
Irish Tune from County
Derry and Children's
March, as well as music
by numerous other
composers. Schmid's
orchestration served as
the source material for a
band version of Country
Gardens that appeared in
1931, attributed to Tom
Clark. The following note
appeared on the concert
band Synoptic Score (a
most un-Grainger-like
term): String-Bass and
Harp (or any other) parts

(also sometimes called
his VIOLIN CONCERTO No. 2
as it is more a violin
concerto than symphony),
for the famed violinist
Pablo Sarate in 1874. The
great virtuoso had given
the first performance of
his violin concerto in
the previous year.
Premiered on February 7,
1875, in Paris, this
SPANISH SYMPHONY
reflected the occupation
of French Romantic
composers with Spanish
musical culture. Lalo
implements a 5-movement
structure, tapping into
his own Spanish heritage
with oscillating
two-and-three rhythms and
folk dance brio.

Butterworth (1885-1916),
an English composer whose
life was cut short at the
Battle of the Somme,
wrote two song cycles
based on A SHROPSHIRE
LAD, a collection of 63
poems by A.E. Housman.
Conceived as an epilogue,
the orchestral rhapsody
to A SHROPSHIRE LAD is
widely considered to be
his masterpiece. The
London Symphony Orchestra
gave the first
performance at the Leeds
Festival on October 2,
1913 under the direction
of Arthur Nikisch.
Originally titled THE
LAND OF THE LOST CONTENT,
it looks back at an
idyllic world threatened,
perhaps prophetically, by
the fear of uncertainty
and loss.

Anderson (1908-1975),
ever-popular in the
concert hall for his
light orchestral pieces,
found a great musical
ally in the Boston Pops
Orchestra under its
director, Arthur Fiedler.
Premiering many of his
works, they introduced to
the world such gems as
Sleigh Ride, Jazz
Pizzicato, and The
Syncopated Clock. In the
1950s, Anderson began to
record his music under
the Decca label, and out
of these sessions came a
short piece for
orchestra, THE FIRST DAY
OF SPRING, first recorded
on June 25, 1954. A solo
horn introduces the
melody, which drifts
through the orchestra
into an idyllic finish.
An American Pops classic
in it's original scoring,
this work is part of the
Anderson Classics Series
by E.F. Kalmus.

When Max
Reinhardt was engaged to
direct a German language
production of
Shakespeare's Much Ado
About Nothing at the
Vienna Volksbühne in
1918, he asked Korngold
to compose the incidental
music. The production,
under the German title
Viel Lärmen um Nichts
did not open until May 6,
1920 at the Schönbrunn
Palace Theater. In the
pit, the composer led
members of the Vienna
Philharmonic, performing
no less than 18 pieces of
music. In the meantime,
due to the tardy premiere
of the play, Korngold had
already extracted a
five-movement orchestral
suite which garnered much
praise when performed
three months before the
play's opening night. The
five movements included:
1. the Overture; 2. Scene
in the Bridal Chamber; 3.
Holzapfel und Schlehwein
(a mock-serious scene);
4. Intermezzo (Garden
Scene); and 5. Hornpipe.
When the play moved to
Vienna's Burgtheater
(more than 80
performances) and later
to the Rezidenz Theater
in Munich, the music
continued to attract much
attention. Demand for the
music was such that
Korngold arranged the
suite into versions for
violin and piano (four
pieces), and for solo
piano (three pieces).
German composer-arranger
Leo Artok (1885-1935)
arranged the most popular
three items (1. Hornpipe;
2. Garden Scene; and 3.
In the Bridal Chamber)
for small orchestra,
which were then published
by Schott in 1926. This
newly engraved edition of
the Artok arrangement,
offered with a new full
score for the first time,
has been completed by R.
Mark Rogers. All editions
noted above are available
from the publisher.

(1929-1978) wrote the
music and lyrics for Ne
me quitte pas (If You Go
Away) in 1959. The song
was later adapted with
English lyrics by Rod
McKuen, and the work is
considered a pop standard
with recordings by many
artists. This

completed by Richard
Hayman (1920-2014), who
had a very successful
career as chief music
arranger for the Boston
Pops Orchestra, an
association that lasted
over 50 years, and who
also served as a pops
conductor for various

serious heart condition,
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
crafted Das Lied von der
Erde (The Song of the
Earth) in the years 1908
and 1909. The first
performance took place on
November 20, 1911 at the
Tonhalle in Munich,
conducted by Bruno
Walter. It encompasses
six settings of old
Chinese poems, four of
them by the Tang Dynasty
poet Li Bai, loosely
translated into German by
Hans Bethge. Conscious of
his own mortality, Mahler
filled his orchestral
song cycle with themes of
resignation, fading
beauty, and autumn
loneliness. The last
song, roughly the same
length as the previous
