The
march style is important
to the heritage of the
modern concert band. Why
not get beginners off to
a great start by teaching
them this essential band
style as early as
possible? Achieve u
ses only the first six
notes of the Bb-major
scale and utilizes two
repeated eighth notes as
the most difficult
rhythm. It is written in
traditional march form
and style, but without
modulation in the
trio. The march
style is important
to the heritage of the
modern concert band, and
it is my opinion that
even the youngest of
students should be taught
the march style and form
as early as
possible. This march
sets out to give these
students that
opportunity. It uses only
the first six notes of
the Bb-major scale, and
the most difficult rhythm
is two repeated eighth
notes. Yet it has all of
the traditional march
form and style. The
form of this easy march
is the traditional intro,
first strain, second
strain and trio. The
only difference from more
challenge marches is that
the key does not change
to the subdominant at the
trio. Most everything
else is the same as you
would find in the
American marches of
Sousa, Fillmore or
King.The march begins
forte with a quote from
the end of the second
strain, something that is
common in many
marches. This is
followed by the first
strain at a softer
dynamic
level. Additional
voices are added on the
repeat for
variety. The second
strain has tradition
changes in dynamics,
first starting out loud,
then getting soft with
crescendos to the end of
the strain. The trio
following again in
typical fashion with the
first time being very
soft and legato. There
are some suggestions for
changing the
orchestration, but you
can use your creativity
to tailor the
instrumentation to your
musical taste. The
repeat of the trio should
then be back to a more
marcato march
style. This should
start with the last note
of the first ending in m.
70. The march then
ends with the traditional
stinger.It is my opinion
that in marches with this
form that the repeats
should not be eliminated.
By doing so, it changes
the form and makes the
march lopsided, with the
first half of the
marching being too short
compared to the trio
section.It has been my
pleasure to have the
opportunity to write this
piece. I hope you and

How often has
something been justified

or other? How can it be
that opposing armies and
the use of weapons are
ever “in the name
ofâ€...? This is a
common thread in the
history of different
faiths. Good was created
but evil was committed
and all “in the
name of...†This
thread is also found in
the history of the
Premonstratensian Abbey
at Wadgassen. The abbey
was built in the 12th
century on unfertile,
desolate moorland, which
later evolved into the
most powerful religious
community in the
Saarland. The history of
the abbey records quite
astounding achievements
under the motto desertum
florebit quasi lilium
(“the desert will
bloom like a
lilyâ€); but also
the harsh treatment of
delinquents. The order
had its own school, in
which children were
taught the seven liberal
arts (which included
music as well as
geography and astronomy),
but the poor were left to
starve outside the abbey
walls and were only
allowed to eat from the
members' on feast days.
The medieval witch trials
demanded their pound of
flesh, and one group that
fell victim were ecstatic
dancers who moved wildly
to music--which was
interpreted as the
devil's work. The result:
a show trial that
sentenced the dancers to
death by fire. All in the
name of... The year is
1789: Abbot Bordier is in
the tenth year of his
command. He does not yet
know that he is to be the
last abbot of an almost
700-year-tradition. Not
far from the abbey is the
French border, which has
long been making itself
felt with the sound of
gunfire, and the brothers
continue to keep a
nervous eye on it. The
first portents of the
French Revolution loom,
but no one wants to
believe it--that is,
until the French pound
the door down, storm the
abbey and come right into
the brothers' chambers.
In a blind fury, all the
pipes of the abbey organ
are torn out, icons
beheaded with swords and
brothers beaten death
while numerous buildings
are set on fire. The
abbey church is in
flames. A frantic and
desperate escape begins.
Abbot Bordier and a
handful of brothers make
their getaway via the
River Saar, adjacent to
the abbey, to the
neighbouring village of
Bous. They survive, but
their life--the
Premonstratensian
abbey--is destroyed.
While they flee towards
Prague and the sanctuary
of the Strahov Monastery,
the abbey at Wadgassen is
razed to the ground and
becomes a stone quarry.
The desert blooms once
more, however. A few
short decades later, a
glasswork arises from the
foundations of the abbey.
As peace returns to the
region, it brings jobs
and a new vision for its
people.

of one such situation is
‘They are
coming’. John
Emerson Blackstone had
been working on a new
composition for some time
when he received a
telephone call from his
editor, who told him that
the deadline was
approaching rapidly, even
worse, that it would
expire at the end of that
same day and that he
would drop by in person
to fetch thecomposition!
Blackstone set to
work in a frenzy and
completed the last
details. When his editor
arrived, the piece was
finished ..... and got
its definitive title:
‘They are coming’.

the Reeds was
commissioned by Deena
Draycott in memory of
John Watson, an army
bandsman, teacher and
bassoonist. Wind in
the Reeds is both a
tribute and lasting
memorial to John. The
piece is largely pastoral
in nature, evoking images
conjured up by the
‘play on
words’ in the
title, but includes a
faster central section
which exploits other
aspects of the character
of the bassoon.
Transitions between the
various sections of the
piece are achieved
through a series of
accompanied cadenzas for
the
soloist.
Wind
in the Reeds werd

Every year a
competition for wind
orchestras and brass
bands takes place in
Wallberg, Switzerland.
Apart from a hymn and a
solo piece, all
orchestras also have a
compulsory piece to play.
The commission to create
a compulsory piece for
the 2012 competition fell
to Jan de Haan. The
composition is entitled
Musica Helvetica.
It takes the form of a
three-part concert work,
in which the last two
parts flow directly from
one to the other. The
first part, Musica
Prima, is a brisk
virtuoso opening with
jazz flavours woven in.
The following section,
Musica Sacra,
offers a contrast with an
extraordinarily colourful
instrumentation for the
gorgeous main theme.
Thefinal part, Musica
Alpina, is inspired
by the great variety of
scenery in Switzerland.
With its witty humour it
makes a worthy conclusion
to this beautiful
tryptich.
In het
Zwitserse Wallberg wordt

competition for wind
orchestras and brass
bands takes place in
Wallberg, Switzerland.
Apart from a hymn and a
solo piece, all
orchestras also have a
compulsory piece to play.
The commission to create
a compulsory piece for
the 2012 competition fell
to Jan de Haan. The
composition is entitled
Musica Helvetica.
It takes the form of a
three-part concert work,
in which the last two
parts flow directly from
one to the other. The
first part, Musica
Prima, is a brisk
virtuoso opening with
jazz flavours woven in.
The following section,
Musica Sacra,
offers a contrast with an
extraordinarily colourful
instrumentation for the
gorgeous main theme.
Thefinal part, Musica
Alpina, is inspired
by the great variety of
scenery in Switzerland.
With its witty humour it
makes a worthy conclusion
to this beautiful
tryptich.

After
the great success of the
Greek Folk Song Suite
that has lasted for over
twenty years, Franco
Cesarini once again
ventures intothe long and
rich tradition of Greek
folk music. In his Greek
Folk Song Suite No. 2,
the three movements that
form the piece are named
after the three dances
reworked by the composer.
The first movement,
Samiotissa is a
kalamatianos, whose most
distinctive feature is
the irregular 7/8-time
signature. It is a
festive dance, today
considered the Greek
national dance, which has
roots dating back to
antiquity. The second
movement, Kato sto jalo
is a zeibekiko, a
slow-paced dance
performed by only one man
at a time which was
apparently originated
among the warriors of
Ancient Anatolia. The
third and last movement,
Chasaposerviko, is the
fast part of the hasapiko
dance and is
characterized by its more
extensive form. A new
journey into the Greek
folk tradition that will
delight both performers
and audience.

earth. The descent of the
crater of the volcano
called Snaeffels,
situated in Iceland,
marks thebeginning of
this voyage to the
sublunary world. The
German geologist,
professor Lidenbrock, is
accompanied on this trip
by his nephew Axel and an
Icelandic guide named
Hans. The last mentioned
will be helpful in many
occasions.

The
composer tried in this
single work to give a
musical expression to
various significant
moments from this novel.
In the introduction he
sketches an image of the
dismal ambience on the
island by using dark
colors. Risingfragments
of mist reveal the flanks
of the monumental
mountain Scataris. The
composer tries to catch
this image in a majestic
and broad
chorale.

from Iceland
Subsequently the ostinato
rhythmicity and
virtuosity representthe
hectic descent of the
crater of the volcano.
The party descends ever
more and more and travels
south, away from Iceland.
On the way, they see all
kinds of rock formations,
fossils and minerals. At
a depth of thirty hours
walking distance, atabout
150 kilometers below the
surface, they reach a sub
terrestrial sea which is
called the Lidenbrock
sea.
Genuine
eruption of
sounds
Strange
electric manifestations
and unpredictable weather
conditions accompany
thissingular phenomenon.
An orchestral
tutti-episode expresses
this impression
musically. On a
make-shift raft, the
party continues its
voyage, heading to the
south coast of this huge
sea. Once ashore, an
enormous rock obstructs
the passage. The
blowingup of this
obstacle unleashes a
genuine eruption of
sounds in the
orchestration.
Spat out by the
volcano
But the
explosion has an
unforeseen side effect.
The sea - travelers and
raft included - is sucked
upwards into a dark
hole.Again, our heroes
are accompanied on their
involuntary voyage, while
left to fend for
themselves, by an ever
increasing ostinato
rhythmicity.
Before an irruption can
destroy the raft, the
threesome manages to
escape and climb up
through acave towards the
daylight. They seem to be
spat out by the Stromboli
volcano on the island of
Sicily, far from home.
The composition ends
with triumphant sounds
that represent the
scientific triumph of
these
adventurers.

was Director of Music at
St Paul’s Girls
School in Brook Green,
London. St
Paul’s Suite,
written for the
school’s string
orchestra, was premiered
there in 1913 and
consists of four
movements: an energetic
Jig in 6/8 and
9/8, Ostinato,
based on a simple 4-note
theme, Intermezzo,
an energetic and rhythmic
dance and Finale,
adapted from the
Second Suite in F
in which Holst
brilliantly combines
The Dargason and
The English Dancing

Artemis is the
Greek goddess of hunting
and forests. In western
art she is often pictured
with deer, lions or bears
with a bow in her hand.
The tempo of this march
is stately and the themes
are
“concertanteâ€
in character making
Artemis best suited as a
concert march rather than
a street march.
Technically this march is
not too difficult
although at times some
dexterous fingering is
necessary. The trio
melody is especially
lyrical and offers
various sections within
the band the possibility
to show off their skill
in playing the expressive
melody. This excellent
new concert march is sure
to become a classic and
be performed time and
time again.
Het
tempo van deze mars is
statig en de
thema’s zijn
concertant van karakter:
Artemis is dus
eerder geschikt als
concertmars dan als
loopmars. Technisch is
dit werk niet erg lastig
om spelen, al wordt af en
toe wel wat
vingervaardigheidvereist.
De triomelodie is echter
uitgesproken lyrisch en
biedt diverse secties
binnen het orkest de
mogelijkheid om zich
melodisch en expressief
te etaleren. Een
aangenaam klinkende en
prima speelbare
concertmars!
Artem
is ist die griechische
Göttin der Jagd und
der Wälder. Jan Van
der Roost ließ sich
zum wiederholten Male von
der griechischen
Mythologie inspirieren
und komponierte diesen
Marsch mit
gemäßigtem Tempo
und konzertanten Themen.
Obwohl technisch nicht
sehr schwer, erfordert er
doch stellenweise etwas
Fingerfertigkeit. Der
Trio-Teil ist jedoch
besonders lyrisch und
bietet verschiedenen
Registern des
Blasorchesters die
Möglichkeit, sich in
Melodie und Ausdruck zu
beweisen. Kurz gesagt ist
Artemis ein
ausgezeichneter und gut
spielbarer Konzertmarsch,
der viele Blasorchester
anspricht.
Artemis è la Dea
greca della natura
selvatica e della caccia.
Nella cultura
occidentale, è spesso
rappresentata armata di
arco e frecce e
circondata da cervi,
leoni e orsi. Evolvendosi
su un tempo maestoso e
sviluppando temi centrali
dal carattere

grandi marce da concerto.
Ad eccezione di qualche
passaggio che necessita
una maggiore scioltezza
delle dita, il brano
contiene solo poche
difficolt tecniche.
Artemis è un pezzo
