Cesarini by the Swiss
Band Association as part
of a project for the
renewal and expansion of
the artistic repertoire.
“There was never a
night or a problem that
could defeat sunrise or
hope.â€. This
sentence by the English
philosopher Bernard
Williamsinspired Franco
Cesarini in composing
this overture. In fact,
even the darkest night is
always followed by the
sunrise and
metaphorically, in every
moment of difficulty, man
clings to the hope of a
better future. Bright
Dawn Overture is written
in the classic form of an
Italian overture
(fast-slow-fast). It is
intended as a hymn of
hope of recovery after a
period of great
difficulty. A single
theme characterizes the
composition, passing
through the various
registers and presents
itself in new forms,
while constantly being
transformed. In the
central part the theme
takes on an almost
mystical character, while
in the finale it presents
itself in a heroic guise
and the composition
concludes with a gesture
of decisive optimism. A
piece accessible to most
concert bands, perfect as
an opening work!

on May 22, 1813, at the
Teatro San Benedetto in
Venice, L'italiana in
Algeri (The Italian Girl
in Algiers) by Gioachino
Rossini (1792-1868) was a
success, with subsequent
performances in Vicenza,
Milan, and Naples. It was
later performed at His
Majesty's Theatre in
London in 1819, and again
in New York in 1832.
Rossini's mixture of
opera seria and opera
buffa is notable —
L'italiana in Algeri
tells the tale of
Isabella, an Italian girl
who uses her wiles to
trick unwitting Mustafà,
the Bey of Algiers, into
freeing her and her
lover, Lindoro from his
palace. The opera itself
fell somewhat out of
favor in the 19th century
but has been revived
frequently since World
War II with many
successful productions.
The sorrowful cavatina
Cruda sorte! Amor
Tiranno! takes place in
Act I, and serves as the
introductory aria of
Isabella, who finds
herself shipwrecked in
Algiers. The aria is
preceded by the chorus
Quanto Roba!

some time, she flees back
to Rambaldo when Ruggero
proposes marriage,
declaring that she cannot
keep her past a secret
and she will not allow
her previous life to
bring grief to both
Ruggero and his parents.
Never satisfied, Puccini
revised the operetta in
both 1920 and 1921,
altering the ending each
time, and he passed
before he settled on the
definitive version. The
beautiful tenor aria
PARIGI! È LA CITTÀ DEI
DESIDERI (Paris! It is
the city of desire) was
not included in the
original libretto and
added by Puccini to give
Ruggero, the romantic
lead, something to do in
the first act. While it
does not move the plot
forward, the aria does
quickly endear listeners
to the Ruggero character.
The aria was later cut
from the opera and is not
usually heard in staged
versions, although the
music was used again with
different text in
Puccini's 1917 song
MORIRE?, S. 89. This
edition of the aria by
Michael Kaye is from the
second version (1920) of

Psalm XIX: The
Heavens Declare was
written by the Italian
composer, writer, and
theorist Benedetto
Marcello (1686-1739). By
profession Marcello
served as a governor and
chamber-lain in Italy,
although he is well-known
for his harsh satires of
contemporary coposers,
such as Vivaldi and
Lotti, As a composer,
Marcello was ingenious
and imaginative; his
works include opera
librettos, concertos,
vocal music, and psalm
settings in cantana
style. This particular
psalm setting has become
popular for organ, and,
thanks to the talent of
arranger Barry Toombs, is
part of the repertoire of
the Westwind Brass. Mr.
Toombs's brass quintet
arrangement of The
Heavens Declare calls for
the optional B Piccolo
Trumpet in the 1st
Trumpet part. It is
preferred that the 1st
trumpet player use a
piccolo trumpet. However,
if one is not available,
B trumpet may be uses as
a substitute.

brought to the Salzburg
court orchestra by the
Prince-Archbishop of
Salzburg, Heironymus
Colloredo, that the
original movements was
too artificial, according
to a letter from Leopold
Mozart. The Mozarts,
finding Brunetti boorish
and morally
objectionable, also would
have thought his
complaint regarding the
artificial second
movement to confirm their
worst opinions of Italian
taste. Still, young
Mozart wrote the
replacement Adagio as
requested, and its serene
beauty in sonata form
remains a fine example of
his lyrical ability.

Italian city of Gubbio,
Umbria in which various
bands from all over Italy
participate. The first
performance of this piece
was given at the Piazza
Grande, Gubbio, under the
baton of the composer
himself, with a wind band
of some 250 musicians. A
stately introduction,
with festive percussion,
is followed by a catchy
theme in alternating pop
and march rhythms. The
opening theme then
returns as a marcia
cantabile, and the
work is brought to a
grand and compelling
conclusion.

esecuzione del brano è
avvenuta nella Piazza
Grande di Gubbio, sotto
la guida dello stesso
compositore con una banda
di 250 strumentisti a
fiato. Una maestosa
introduzione con festose
percussioni è seguita
da un tema accattivante
che alterna ritmi pop e
di marcia. Il tema
iniziale ritorna poi come
una marcia
cantabile e il brano
si avvia ad una grande ed
irresistibile
conclusione.

Monterosi is a
village in the Italian
province of Viterbo in
the Lazio region. This
work is dedicated to the
Accademia Musicale
Francigena in Monterosi,
on the occasion of the
third ‘Tomasso
Albani’ a national
concert band competition
at which the composer is
often an adjudicator and
guest conductor. It is a
solemn piece, with
lyrical tendencies, which
demonstrates the
glorious, full sound of
the concert band.

The idea
for Totentanz, S. 126
(Dance of the Dead) was
conceived by Franz Liszt
(1811-1886) in 1938. Two
versions were to follow,
the first completed in
1853, and the second
version finished in 1864.
The flashy virtuosic
piece for the solo piano
uses the Gregorian
plainchant melody Dies
irae (Day of Judgement)
in a set of variations.
The first version, which
is nicknamed De
Profundis, is most
commonly heard in the
1919 edition by famed
Italian composer,
pianist, and conductor
Ferruccio Busoni
(1866-1924).
