Maurice Ravel's

The concerto was deeply
infused with jazz idioms

where Ravel was traveling

remarked that The most

The
overture to Giuseppe
Verdi's 1862 opera La
Forza del Destino (The
Power of Fate) has
remained standard
repertoire for orchestras
around the world. In this
imaginative work for
winds, Jay Bocook pays
homage to the mastery of
Verdi and begins with the
ominous 3-note
“fate†theme
from the overture.
Throughout the piece
melodies are recast and
harmonies are
embellished, culminating
in an exhilarating
conclusion where the
final seven bars quote
Verdi's original almost
identically. A brilliant
addition to the wind band
repertoire.

born in Cardiff and
started composing at the
age of ten. His first
work broadcast on
national radio was
written when he was
fifteen. He studied at
Cambridge University
(1977-1980) and the Royal
Academy of Music
(1991-1993) where he
graduated with the
highest honours including
the Principal's Prize. He
has been on the staff at
the London College of
Music and Media, the
junior Academy of the
Royal Academy of Music
and, since 2000 he has
been the Head of School
of Composition at the
Royal Northern College of
Music in Manchester .
International recognition
came in 1994 with the US
Walter Beeler Prize for
his work Metropolis .
With it began what has
developed into probably
the most important wind
ensemble catalogue by a
contemporary composer,
ranging from extremely
challenging to the most
accessible, at all
technical levels, seized
on by players
internationally, widely
recorded and now
absolutely central to the
world's wind repertoire.
Equally important though
are his works for dance,
and concert pieces like
the chamber orchestral
Weimar , the Violin
Sonata , a Clarinet
Concerto for the Royal
Liverpool Philharmonic
Orchestra and Diaspora
for strings (for the
Goldberg Ensemble).
Deceptively mainstream at
first glance, they
display the same
inventive brilliance,
pulsating sound world,
striking use of rhythm
and an undogmatic absence
of stylistic hang-ups to
embrace jazz and
serialism in works where
power, poetry, irony and
pathos, often underlaid
by a theatrical and
deeply subversive
element, coalesce in an
integrated, highly
individual musical voice.
Gorb is also not afraid
to draw on the vivid
musical heritage of his
Jewish roots, sometimes
directly, often in a more
subsumed or radically
creative way. The crucial
and consistent feature of
Gorb's work though is
that it communicates
strongly without
patronizing players or
audiences. He firmly
believes that if
contemporary music - any
music - does not impact
on listeners then its
message is irrelevant; it
is lost.

Suite in B-flat
is in three movements.
The first section is
jaunty and lighthearted,
the second is subdued and
tranquil, whilst the
third is a symphonic
march which gives the
bands plenty of chance to
blow their socks
off.
British
composer Gordon Jacob
ranks as one of the
world's foremost
contributors to the wind
ensemble repertoire, with
hundreds of works for
military band as well as
other types of musical
groups. He earned his
Doctor of Music degree
and also taught
counterpoint,
orchestration and
composition for 40 years
at the Royal College of
Music. He wrote band
works along the lines of
Gustav Holst and his good
friend Vaughan Williams -
not imitating their style
but, as he said, striving
to come near to their
spirit of adventure and
independence of thought
in his own work. This
suite was originally
written for Brass Band in
1955 and was arranged for
symphonic band in 1979.
It has three movements,
opening with a
lighthearted March,
followed by a subdued and
tranquil movement
entitled Solemn Music.
The suite closes with a
symphonic march, which
showcases the power of
the wind ensemble.

Monticel
lo is the name of a
little place northeast of
Rome where my wife and I
have rented a simple home
for more than 20 years.
We participated
intensively in the
cultural life of the
community where there was
also a little band, the
Banda Municipale
Cornicolana, which
consisted of about 55
wind players, mostly
youngsters. One day, the
Il Direttore came to me
and asked if I would like
to write a march for
them, which I naturally
did. It became the Marcia
a Montecelio. After 14
rehearsals, with everyone
tired, perspiring and red
in the face, we were
forced to give up. The
march was too difficult
for them. I then wrote
another, easier march for
them to perform at the
forthcoming feast of San
Michaeli. The Montecelio
march was composed on
pure inspiration in just
two days. It is written
in the Italian style -
with a pinch of
Sousa.

Hear the sounds
of marching bands,
choirs, and the music of
Broadway in this exciting
concert march. Inspired
by an actual parade in
New York, Michael Brand
brings us this
spectacular original
march. Perfect in any
setting throughout the
year.
In June 1997
I was in New York and had
a free weekend. On Sunday
morning I was awoken
early by a great deal of
banging and saw that
barriers and roadblocks
had been erected
throughout Central Park.
Why? I soon heard the
answer: a great parade.
When the Americans put
together a parade they
really mean it! This one
lasted 3 hours and
brought the center of New
York to a standstill.
Bands, dancers and choirs
marched past in
celebration of the Jewish
faith. New York Parade is
completely original but
its starting point in my
imagination was a
marching band, a choir
and Broadway. The
marching band starts in
the distance, passes by
and as it moves away we
hear the next block of
performers singing,
almost chanting, a hymn
(called Jewish Song). The
groups suddenly turn into
Broadway, as a song from
an imaginary show
intervenes but then the
band and choir return in
counterpoint and all
three themes come
together.

Warlike, then
noble, Now is the Day is
based on the great figure
in Scottish history -
William Wallace, often
called Braveheart.
Opening with the
woodwinds playing drums
along with the percussion
section against brass
fanfares, this piece will
create an air of
excitement. An alto
saxophone solo provides a
brief moment of solace
between the battle
scenes.
This work
is based on a great
figure in Scottish
history - William
Wallace, often called
Braveheart. The song
Scots wha hae wi' Wallace
bled, which is Scotland's
unofficial national
anthem contains the line
Now is the day and how is
the hour, and this is the
source of the title. The
opening section is
warlike in sound with
woodwinds playing
tambours of some sort -
tom-toms, tambours, even
old drum skins will make
the kind of noise
required to simulate a
battle. Noisy brass
fanfares are melodic
fragments of Scots wha
hae melody. Eventually,
woodwinds join in and the
music slows down to an
alto saxophone solo,
again based on fragments
of Scots wha hae. The
battle tempo resumes and
percussion then lead the
band noisily into an
eventual full statement
of the theme creating a
noble sound against the
continuing drum patterns,
leading to a triumphant
ending.

Full of
intrigue and mystery,
Variations on a Bass
Theme is a treat for the
ears. A plethora of
thematic material emerges
out of tuba section in
the opening bar, creating
the jumping off point for
the whole work. Lloyd
takes the listener down
numerous unexpected
paths, conjuring many
visual images along the
way as if watching a
movie.
Variations
on a Bass Theme was
written in 1986 for brass
band and the original
version was titled
Diversions on a Bass
Theme. The composer
himself wrote: This piece
is a set of variations.
Traditionally variations
were what they said they
were, i.e. a given tune
was treated in a variety
of ways. The pattern of
this work is made the
other way round: a number
of tunes grow out of the
first bar, played by the
tubas, which provide the
motif for the whole work.
Arranger's Note: The
suggestion to arrange the
work for symphonic wind
band came from George
Lloyd: he felt the piece
lent itself to such
transcription and asked
if I would be interested
in undertaking it.
Interestingly, he always
referred to the piece as
his Variations on a Bass
Theme and I have
reflected this in the
title of this concert
band version. In all
other respects the work
is exactly as George
Lloyd wrote it.

From majestic
to pastoral to
dance-like, Land of the
Long White Cloud is
Philip Sparke's
representation of New
Zealand. This piece is a
wonderful addition to the
concert band
repetoire.
Long
before Europeans ventured
out of sight of land, the
bold and restless
ancestors of the Maori
people were making
voyages of thousands of
miles across the world's
greatest oceans. It was
around 1000 AD that they
landed in New Zealand.
The discovery of New
Zealand is attributed in
Maori tradition to Kupe
and the circumstances of
the landfall gave the
country its Maori name.
As land was approached, a
long, flat volcanic cloud
could be seen. Kupe's
wife Hine-te-aparangi,
looked to the horizon and
cried out, He ao! He ao!
A cloud! A cloud! The
name of Aotearoa was
given to the islands -
The Land of the Long
White Cloud. Land of the
Long White Cloud was
originally conceived as a
brass band work as a
result of a commission by
the New Zealand Brass
Band Association for
their National
Championships held in
1980 in Christchurch.
This transcription by the
composer was commissioned
by Keith Allen and

Orchestra who gave the
first performance in the

L'Enfance
du Christ (The Childhood
of Christ), written
between 1850 and 1854, is
the nearest that Berlioz
got to writing an
oratorio. It is in three
parts; he called it a
'sacred trilogy.'
Throughout, the music is
restrained, delicate, and
contemplative. In its
original version, The
Shepherds' Farewell is
scored for chorus
accompanied by two oboes,
two clarinets, and
strings. With these
selected colors, Berlioz
achieves a masterpiece of
delicacy and serenity. In
this arrangement for
small wind orchestra
without chorus, the wind
instruments are called
upon to display their
softer persuasive sounds
in order to retain the
sensitive nature of this
tender music. This
arrangement may be used
with chorus utilizing the
original chorus parts.
