“Rush Hourâ€
depicts a Friday evening
during which everyone
wants to get home after
work. Unfortunately,
traffic jams and gridlock
stand in the way! In
“Promenade
Waltz†you can
picture an evening walk
along the beautiful
lakeside, then a glass of
wine loosens you up
leading to the third
movement:
“Romance,â€
which starts with a
promising conversation...
The funny finale
“Monday

Spirit of the
Winds, a concert/festival
work for the developing
band, was inspired by the
beautiful Temecula Valley
of California. Each year,
the sky over the valley
is filled with hot air
balloons creating a
visual sight that is not
soon forgotten. Of
course, balloons are
unable to steer and must
fly with the gentle
breezes of the air
current. As a result,
those subject to the
spirit of the winds can
find themselves over
festival grounds or
floating above the
beautiful Temecula Valley
vineyards. Beginning with
a bold, yet mysterious
statement, the
introduction gives way to
a soaring melody as our
flight begins. Cascading
figures in the woodwinds
create the effect of wind
currents followed by a
beautiful secondary
melodic statement. The
original theme returns
leading to a very
energetic conclusion.
Accessible to a wide
range of concert bands,
Spirit of the Winds
provides multiple
teaching opportunities
and will be enjoyed by
both performer and
audience.

Aurora
Dances was
commissioned by the Hong
Kong-based Winter Band
Festival, and consists of
three movements, to be
played without a break.
‘Aurora
Borealis’ opens
with florid woodwind
figures and highlights
different sections of the
band in turn. The second
movement ‘Aurora
Australis’ leads
to a sombre chorale,
which builds to a
full-band climax. The
finale ‘Aurora
Dances’ is
characterised by
rhythmic, dance-like
themes. A central section
features a contrasting
legato melody, but
this doesn’t
dispel the energetic feel
of the opening, which
returns to close the
work.

As
the title implies, this
piece is written in a
contemplative manner for
beginning students.Â
It is a good piece to
demonstrate basic
compositional techniques
that the students will be
able identify easily in
the piece. It begins with
a lush opening section
with an elegant melody to
work on musicianship.
This is contrasted by the
uptempo section of the
piece based on the same
basic musical material,
but in a varied style and
frolicking feel. A very
satisfying piece for
beginning wind
players. Contemplation
: the action to look
thoughtfully at something
for a long time.When
composing music that will
be used with younger
students, I want to
stimulate thoughtfulness
in them. In this
particular piece I want
the students to be able
to stretch their
musicianship beyond their
experience on their
instruments to play in a
contemplative
manner. To me, this is
the essence of musical
playing in an emotional
and thoughtful way. It is
something that cannot be
stressed enough, even in
students that have just
begun to play. As soon
as possible, they should
be asked to put
themselves into the music
and make it more than the
notes and rhythms on the
page.This piece is my
attempt to provide very
young students, who are
just beginning their
musical journey, with
something they can reach
technically, but have to
stretch for
musically. The amount
of notes and rhythms
is limited, but students
should strive for beauty
of tone, good phrasing
and emotional
involvement.After a short
introduction, the
heartfelt main theme
begins at a lyrical and
slow tempo. This is
developed with the
addition of a secondary
theme, featuring the
lower voices, before the
piece leads to an Allegro
section that is based on
the same musical material
with a difference in
tempo and a variation in
rhythm patterns. The
piece can serve to show
students that the same
basic music can have an
entirely different
emotional connection with
differences in tempo,
rhythm and style, with
the first section of the
piece being sentimental
and the faster section
being more joyous in
nature. As with all
of my pieces for younger
students, it is
completely acceptable to
me for you to adjust the
tempo to fit the
educational needs of your
students.It has been my
pleasure to have the
opportunity to write this
piece. I hope you and

Inspired

calls to mind the thrill

This piece was
commissioned by the
‘Concert Band
Vlamertinge’ and
is a plea for peace: the
title translates as
‘Peace on
Earth’. This is
expressed by means of the
vocal contribution
expected from the
performers. In various
places of the piece you
can recognize, the words
‘Et In Terra
Pax’ - an appeal
for peace - at first
jumbled together but
later more rhythmically
structured, developing
into synchronized massed
voices.The work starts
with a pentatonic theme
based on the notes D, E,
G, A and C (taken from
‘ConCErtbAnD
VlAmErtinGE’ and
the name of the
conductor, NiCk
VAnDEnDriessChe). A
somewhat sad melody is
developed during an
orchestral climax which
leads to the
firstexplosion of sound
(measure 62 onwards).
Suddenly the opening
measures are recaptured,
albeit with a differently
colored sound: the words
‘Et In Terra
Pax’ bring the
first movement to a
close. A restless Allegro
follows which abruptly
stops and is replaced by
a calming cho-rale-like
passage. A narrator reads
aloud the poem
‘Sonnet’ by
the young poet Charles
Hamilton Sorley, who was
killed during World War
I. This poem fittingly
puts into words the
cruelty and senselessness
of war. After the
expanded recapitulation
of the allegro, the
broad, almost infinite
atmosphere of the
beginning returns.
Clarinet and English horn
play the pentatonic
opening theme once more,
this time broadly, while
the words ‘Et In
Terra... Pax’ are
repeated again and again
by the rest of the
orchestra.The composer
has purposely avoided all
forms of aggression and
bombastic sounds
regularly used in works
about war. Fear of
violence and destruction
can be heard and felt
during the allegro
passages. The charged
opening makes way in the
end for hope: May
peacefulness replace
cruelty in everyday life,
too.
Dieses Werk
wurde im Auftrag der
Concert Band Vlamertinge
geschrieben und ist ein
Plädoyer an den
Frieden: Der Titel
bedeutet dann auch
‘Frieden auf
Erden’. Dies kommt
unter anderem im vokalen
Anteil der
Ausführenden zum
Ausdruck. An
verschiedenenStellen des
Werkes erklingen, anfangs
durcheinander dann zu
einem rhythmischen und
strukturierten
Synchrongesang vereint,
die Worte ‘Et In
Terra Pax’ wie ein
flehendes Gebet für
den Frieden.
Ein
pentatonisches Thema
formt den Anfang dieses
Werkes, basierend auf den
Noten D, E, G, A, und C,
die dem Namen:
‘ConCErtbAnD
VlAmErtingE’ und
dem Namen des Dirigenten
NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe
entstammen. Während
der orchestralen Klimax,
die zu einemersten
Klangausbruch führt
(ab Takt 62), entsteht
eine etwas traurige
Melodie. Plötzlich
werden dann die
Eingangstakte
wiederaufgenommen, wenn
auch mit einer
veränderten
Klangfarbe; die Worte
‘Et In Terra
Pax’ runden den
ersten Teil daraufhin ab.
Esfolgt ein unruhiges
Allegro, das
überraschend durch
eine Choralartigen
Passage voller Ruhe
unterbrochen wird. Eine
Sprechstimme liest
währenddessen das
Gedicht Sonnet des
jungen Dichters Charles
Hamilton Sorley vor, der
im ersten Weltkriegfiel.
Es findet für die
Grausamkeit und
Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges
die passenden Worte.
Nachdem das Allegro,
diesmal mit einigen
Ausbreitungen, wiederholt
wird, kehrt die weite,
beinahe unendliche
Atmosphäre des Beginns
wieder zurück.
Klarinettenspielen
zusammen mit einem
Englischhorn das
pentatonische
Eingangsthema ein letztes
Mal in ausgebreiteter
Fassung, wobei das
“Et In Terra
Pax’ durch den
Rest des Orchesters stets
wiederholt wird.Der
Komponist hat bewusst auf
jegliche Form der
Aggression oder
bombastischen Vertonung,
die in so vielen Werken
über den Krieg zu
finden ist, vermieden.
Dennoch ist die Angst vor
Gewalt und Zerstörung
vor allem in den
Allegro-Passagen deutlich
zuhören und zu
fühlen. Am Ende macht
die anfängliche
Spannung jedoch der
Hoffnung Platz: Möge
die Friedlichkeit auch im
täglichen Leben die
Grausamkeit
verbannen….

As the title
suggests, this piece
comprises a set of
variations on an original
chorale,which is
presented in the opening
bars.The chorale uses the
dark middle and lower
sections of the band and
is extended with minor
variations until a pause
leads to the first real
variation, marked Vivo.
This is in the form of a
moto perpetuo. The second
variation is a beautiful
Andante introduced by a
solo clarinet. Following
a full band climax the
final variation opens
with quiet, nervous
energy until its main
theme is introduced.The
chorale makes a brief
appearance until the main
theme reappears. This
leads to a triumphant
final augmented statement
of the chorale theme,
decorated by theflorid
clarinet theme in the
upper woodwinds. A

As the title
suggests, this piece
comprises a set of
variations on an original
chorale,which is
presented in the opening
bars.The chorale uses the
dark middle and lower
sections of the band and
is extended with minor
variations until a pause
leads to the first real
variation, marked Vivo.
This is in the form of a
moto perpetuo. The second
variation is a beautiful
Andante introduced by a
solo clarinet. Following
a full band climax the
final variation opens
with quiet, nervous
energy until its main
theme is introduced.The
chorale makes a brief
appearance until the main
theme reappears. This
leads to a triumphant
final augmented statement
of the chorale theme,
decorated by theflorid
clarinet theme in the
upper woodwinds. A
dazzling new concert
work.
Zoals de
titel al aangeeft,
bestaat het stuk uit een
aantal variaties op een
oorspronkelijk koraal,
dat aan het begin wordt
ge ntroduceerd. Het
koraal, stevig verankerd
in c mineur, komt naar
voren in de donkere
midden- en lage
sectiesvan het orkest en
wordt uitgebouwd met
variaties in mineur,
totdat een korte pauze de
overgang vormt naar de
eerste echte variatie,
Vivo getiteld. Dit is een
moto perpetuo. De tweede
variatie, een krachtige
Andante, introduceerteen
soloklarinet. Na een
climax in het hele orkest
vangt de laatste variatie
aan met een stille,
nerveuze energie totdat
het hoofdthema naar voren

This piece
was commissioned by the
'Concert Band
Vlamertinge' and is a
plea for peace: the title
translates as 'Peace on
Earth'. This is expressed
by means of the vocal
contribution expected
from the performers. In
various places of the
piece you can recognize,
the words 'Et In Terra
Pax' - an appeal for
peace - at first jumbled
together but later more
rhythmically structured,
developing into
synchronized massed
voices.The work starts
with a pentatonic theme
based on the notes D, E,
G, A and C (taken from
'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE'
and the name of the
conductor, NiCk
VAnDEnDriessChe). A
somewhat sad melody is
developed during an
orchestral climax which
leads to the
firstexplosion of sound
(measure 62 onwards).
Suddenly the opening
measures are recaptured,
albeit with a differently
colored sound: the words
'Et In Terra Pax' bring
the first movement to a
close. A restless Allegro
follows which abruptly
stops and is replaced by
a calming cho-rale-like
passage. A narrator reads
aloud the poem 'Sonnet'
by the young poet Charles
Hamilton Sorley, who was
killed during World War
I. This poem fittingly
puts into words the
cruelty and senselessness
of war. After the
expanded recapitulation
of the allegro, the
broad, almost infinite
atmosphere of the
beginning returns.
Clarinet and English horn
play the pentatonic
opening theme once more,
this time broadly, while
the words 'Et In Terra...
Pax' are repeated again
and again by the rest of
the orchestra.The
composer has purposely
avoided all forms of
aggression and bombastic
sounds regularly used in
works about war. Fear of
violence and destruction
can be heard and felt
during the allegro
passages. The charged
opening makes way in the
end for hope: May
peacefulness replace
cruelty in everyday life,
too.
Dieses Werk
wurde im Auftrag der
Concert Band Vlamertinge
geschrieben und ist ein
Pladoyer an den Frieden:
Der Titel bedeutet dann
auch 'Frieden auf Erden'.
Dies kommt unter anderem
im vokalen Anteil der
Ausfuhrenden zum
Ausdruck. An
verschiedenenStellen des
Werkes erklingen, anfangs
durcheinander dann zu
einem rhythmischen und
strukturierten
Synchrongesang vereint,
die Worte 'Et In Terra
Pax' wie ein flehendes
Gebet fur den
Frieden.
Ein
pentatonisches Thema
formt den Anfang dieses
Werkes, basierend auf den
Noten D, E, G, A, und C,
die dem Namen:
'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtingE'
und dem Namen des
Dirigenten NiCk
VAnDEnDriessChe
entstammen. Wahrend der
orchestralen Klimax, die
zu einemersten
Klangausbruch fuhrt (ab
Takt 62), entsteht eine
etwas traurige Melodie.
Plotzlich werden dann die
Eingangstakte
wiederaufgenommen, wenn
auch mit einer
veranderten Klangfarbe;
die Worte 'Et In Terra
Pax' runden den ersten
Teil daraufhin ab.
Esfolgt ein unruhiges
Allegro, das uberraschend
durch eine Choralartigen
Passage voller Ruhe
unterbrochen wird. Eine
Sprechstimme liest
wahrenddessen das Gedicht
Sonnet des jungen
Dichters Charles Hamilton
Sorley vor, der im ersten
Weltkriegfiel. Es findet
fur die Grausamkeit und
Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges
die passenden Worte.
Nachdem das Allegro,
diesmal mit einigen
Ausbreitungen, wiederholt
wird, kehrt die weite,
beinahe unendliche
Atmosphare des Beginns
wieder zuruck.
Klarinettenspielen
zusammen mit einem
Englischhorn das
pentatonische
Eingangsthema ein letztes
Mal in ausgebreiteter
Fassung, wobei das Et In
Terra Pax' durch den Rest
des Orchesters stets
wiederholt wird.Der
Komponist hat bewusst auf
jegliche Form der
Aggression oder
bombastischen Vertonung,
die in so vielen Werken
uber den Krieg zu finden
ist, vermieden. Dennoch
ist die Angst vor Gewalt
und Zerstorung vor allem
in den Allegro-Passagen
deutlich zuhoren und zu
fuhlen. Am Ende macht die
anfangliche Spannung
jedoch der Hoffnung
Platz: Moge die
Friedlichkeit auch im
taglichen Leben die
Grausamkeit
verbannen...

Mercury is a
concert march composed in
a typically British
idiom. In 1990, Jan Van
der Roost wrote this
piece on the occasion of
the 15-year anniversary
of his own band: Brass
Band Midden Brabant. Like
many British marches, the
main theme is written in
a minor key. Powerful and
virtuoso themes
characterize the first
part of this march, while
the trio melody is much
more melodical, offering
the tenor register to
display its lyrical
skills. Follows a dynamic
passage for trombones and
trumpets/cornets, leading
to a grandioso version of
the main trio melody and
thus concluding this
march in a magnificent
way.
