Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting 'Pacific Dreams' Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir. With these ideas and his newly purchased print of 'Pacific Dreams', he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific. Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti. Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his 'Pacific Dreams'. Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the 'Symphonic Variations' are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan, himself originally an organist, took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J. S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to amusical adventure, in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony, and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. In 2003 the composer Jacob de Haan had dinner there together with his publishers and other fellow composers. The idea of composing a march to honour the excellent cuisine, the magnificent view of the skyline and the pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant arose during the visit. The musical foundation is a tribute to composer Gustav Holst, and his suite 'The Planets'. Each movement from the suite is quoted in the course of the piece. The title is taken from a book by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler, which was published in the 17th century. The book explains Kepler's cosmological theory that the distance relationship between the planets could be understood in light of the five Platonic solids. The theory proposes that the solids dictate the structure of the universe through geometry. The Legend of Celobrium (“La légende de Celobrium”) est une oeuvre de commande pour l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Soleuvre au Luxembourg à l’occasion de la célébration de son centenaire, en 2007. Celobrium est le nom donné par les Romains à la ville de Soleuvre (Zolwer en luxembourgeois ou Zolver en allemand). La composition raconte une célèbre légende liée à la région depuis des siècles : la légende du Trésor du Zolwerknapp. Le Zolwerknapp (signifiant littéralement « bouton de Soleuvre ») est un des points les plus élevés du Luxembourg. Jadis, il abritait le château d’Alexandre, un noble chevalier descendant du prestigieux Ordre médiéval des Templiers, qui y vivaitavec sa famille et son armée. Non loin du Zolwerknapp, près de Belvaux, vivait au sommet d’une colline boisée, un puissant voleur du nom de Tara. Les deux hommes étaient constamment en conflit, chacun voulant régner sur les terres alentours. Tara finit par remporter le conflit et consentit à une seule concession. Il autorisa l’épouse d’Alexandre à quitter les lieux avec son âne et emporter avec elle tous les biens précieux que l’âne pouvait porter. Il lui accorda le droit de s’installer en lieu sûr aussi loin que l’âne pouvait la mener. Magnanime, elle choisit d’emmener son mari avec elle, consciente que sa fuite serait ainsi ralentie. Avant de partir, elle jeta son or et ses précieux joyaux dans un puits profond du château. Le voyage fut long et difficile. À force de ténacité, ils réussirent à se mettre en sécurité au sommet d’une colline avoisinante. Ils s’y installèrent et érigèrent un nouveau château, le château de Differdange. Les siècles passèrent et le château du Zolwerknapp n’était plus qu’un amas de ruines. Jamais personne n’avait osé y chercher le trésor qui sommeillait dans les profondeurs du puits. Mais un jour, le prêtre local réussit à persuader sept hommes braves de descendre au fond de l’obscur goulot pour récupérer l’or.
