Memoriam: For the
Fallen was
commissioned by Bolsover
District Council for the
Bolsover Brass Summer
School 2014. It is a
setting for narrator and
band of Laurence
Binyon’s
(1869-1943) poem, For
the Fallen, which was
first published in The
Times in September 1914.
Binyon was dismayed at
the outbreak of war and
especially concerned by
the large number
ofcasualties suffered by
the British Expeditionary
Force in the early months
of the battle on the
Western Front. Too old to
enlist, he volunteered as
a hospital orderly in
France. The poem is known
world-wide as the famous
fourth stanza (They
shallgrow not old…)
has become a regular part
of Remembrance Day and
ANZAC Day
services. In
Memoriam: For the
Fallen is a musical
accompaniment to the
poem, shadowing the mood
of each
stanza.

cheerful and varied piece
is characterised by its
ABA form. The first motif
is developed with energy
and vigour right from the
start. The second
movement is more serious
and exudes an air of
romance too. The third
and final movement

introduction, which
together with a rather
complex rhythmic line,
lead to a triumphant
conclusion.

based on the great figure
in Scottish history -
William Wallace, often
called Braveheart.
Opening with the
woodwinds playing drums
along with the percussion
section against brass
fanfares, this piece will
create an air of
excitement. An alto
saxophone solo provides a
brief moment of solace
between the battle
scenes.
This work
is based on a great

Scots wha hae wi' Wallace
bled, which is Scotland's
unofficial national
anthem contains the line
Now is the day and how is
the hour, and this is the
source of the title. The
opening section is
warlike in sound with
woodwinds playing
tambours of some sort -
tom-toms, tambours, even
old drum skins will make
the kind of noise
required to simulate a
battle. Noisy brass
fanfares are melodic
fragments of Scots wha
hae melody. Eventually,
woodwinds join in and the
music slows down to an
alto saxophone solo,
again based on fragments
of Scots wha hae. The
battle tempo resumes and
percussion then lead the
band noisily into an
eventual full statement
of the theme creating a
noble sound against the
continuing drum patterns,
leading to a triumphant
ending.

in your stomach. When you
are thrown completely
into the top you will
have a fantastic view
over the park, but you
can not enjoy itfor long.
Before you know the ship
swings back the other
way.
Part 4:
The Fairy Tale Ride [with
illustrations] Aft
er all those exciting and
spectacular rides and
attractions, it is time
for a peaceful tour in
The Fairy Tale
Ride.Surrounded by a
fairytale setting, you
will discover fable
figures, talking animals
and colorful designs.
Such a beauty and
tranquility. Having had
this experience, we are
ready again for the big
rides in the
park!
Part 5:
The Bumper Cars[with
illustrations] Now
its time to crawl behind
the wheel of the Bumper
Cars! Shall we all chase
the conductor?! Before
you know you are hit by
another visitor or you
will bump against someone
else. In this tough ride
you can prove yourselfas
a real driver, or perhaps
as a really bad
one.
Part 6:
The Roller Coaster [with
illustrations] The
largest, fastest and
scariest ride in the park
... we should definitely
do the Roller Coaster!
All together in the
train,
theover-the-shoulder
restraints are
lowering... be ready to
ride. The train leaves
the station and is
heading for the big lift
hill. It will be very
scary when the train
reaches the top and the
train will be plunged
down the first drop!
Loops,corkscrews and
other spectacular coaster
elements will follow...
Before you know it, the
ride of your life is
over. Shall we ride it
again?!
Part 7:
Leaving the Park [with
animation] Unfortu
nately everything comes
to an end. Thisday in the
theme park is over, but
we have a lot new
experiences to talk
about! The memories of
all the funny and
spectacular rides will
come up when we walk
through the park to the
exit. Just one look over
the shoulder, the
amusement park figuresare
waving at us. Hopefully
we will come back again

are thrown completely

have a fantastic view
over the park, but you
can not enjoy itfor long.

swings back the other
way.
Part 4:
The Fairy Tale Ride [with
illustrations] Aft
er all those exciting and
spectacular rides and
attractions, it is time
for a peaceful tour in
The Fairy Tale
Ride.Surrounded by a
fairytale setting, you
will discover fable
figures, talking animals
and colorful designs.
Such a beauty and
tranquility. Having had
this experience, we are
ready again for the big
rides in the
park!
Part 5:
The Bumper Cars[with
illustrations] Now
its time to crawl behind
the wheel of the Bumper
Cars! Shall we all chase
the conductor?! Before
you know you are hit by
another visitor or you
will bump against someone
else. In this tough ride
you can prove yourselfas
a real driver, or perhaps
as a really bad
one.
Part 6:
The Roller Coaster [with
illustrations] The
largest, fastest and
scariest ride in the park
... we should definitely
do the Roller Coaster!
All together in the
train,
theover-the-shoulder
restraints are
lowering... be ready to
ride. The train leaves
the station and is
heading for the big lift
hill. It will be very
scary when the train
reaches the top and the
train will be plunged
down the first drop!
Loops,corkscrews and
other spectacular coaster
elements will follow...
Before you know it, the
ride of your life is
over. Shall we ride it
again?!
Part 7:
Leaving the Park [with
animation] Unfortu
nately everything comes
to an end. Thisday in the
theme park is over, but
we have a lot new
experiences to talk
about! The memories of
all the funny and
spectacular rides will
come up when we walk
through the park to the
exit. Just one look over
the shoulder, the
amusement park figuresare
waving at us. Hopefully
we will come back again
soon!

Entrance & Parade' [met

opening van het pretpark

attracties en avonturen
die ze in het pretpark
staan te wachten. In
welke attractie zullen we
als eerst stappen?! Er is
zoveel te doen en te
beleven deze dag in het
pretpark! Een parade met
parkfiguren en kleurrijke
praalwagenskomt voorbij,
de pret kan

2: 'The Haunted House'

animatiefilm] De
enige attractie in het
pretpark die geen 'pret'
uitstraalt, is het
spookhuis. Hier worden de
bezoekers uitgedaagd om
zichte begeven in een
huis vol spoken, geesten
en andere onheilspellende
dingen. De klok slaat 12
keer, er is geen weg meer
terug. Gefluister...,
geschreeuw... Gelukkig
slaat de klok bijna 1 uur
en kunnen we deze ongure
plek snel
verlaten.

childhood, Liverpool FC,

of all time. The piece is
not only inspired by a
football match, but also
takes its musical
material from chants and
songs that you will hear
at 3pm on a Saturday
afternoon at any football
ground in Britain. Match
Day was written as a
result of a commission
from the National Youth
Brass Band of Great
Britain (with funds from
Youth Music), and their
Musical Director,
Bramwell Tovey, to whom
the piece is dedicated
and who conducted the
first performance in
April 2006.

Caribbean. In 1494 it
was discovered by
Christopher Columbus, who
used it as private
property until 1509.
After some skirmishes it
fell under British rule
and the sugar trade on
the island flourished.
After the abolition
of slavery in 1834 it was
only granted Home Rule in
1944, but it remained a
member of the British
Commonwealth of Nations.
Whereas the
export of cane sugar used
to be Jamaica’s main
export product for many
years, nowadays music has
taken over this role. At
first American music used
to be very popular on the
island. Later, however,
Jamaican musicians
started to experiment and
thus in the end created
their ownmusical style
called Reggae.
Well-known Reggae
musicians are Bob Marley
and Peter Tosh.
The most important
instruments used in
Reggae are the bass and
the drums. Together they
form the base for the
style: the riddim. A bass
drum accent on the second
and fourth beat are
characteristic of a
typically reggae drum
beat. To this syncopic
patterns are often added.
The rhythm guitarist
plays chords in a
characteristic Reggae
rhythm, not on, but
between the beats.
