His 1996 doctoral thesis on Sweelinck's keyboard music was awarded the Praemium Erasmianum. Dirksen has since published many studies on, and editions of, several masters of the 17th century (Sweelinck, Bull, Cornet, Scheidt, Scheidemann, Buxtehude, Luebeck, Johann Christoph Bach) as well as Johann Sebastian Bach. Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. He writes for a symphonic organ of at least three manuals but many of the pieces could be played on an instrument of only two manuals. Par JOHANNSEN KAY. 'The Great Wall? developed out of an improvisation, a homage to the Great Wall of China. Two motifs dominate in the work, which requires a three-manual organ: a two-measure ostinato in the pedal, and an oriental-sounding melody found on the manuals, in the basic shape and in the variations. The music leads seamlessly from an atmospheric picture into a rhythmically-driven crescendo, is interrupted by a 'storm? fantasy before ending, after a second upsurge, in a radiant fortissimo. The dynamics and articulation are given very precisely in the score. The registration markings relate to the four-manual Mühleisen organ in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart, and are intended as a guide for performance. This thrilling work, which recalls Ravel's 'Bolero? at certain moments, communicates directly with a wide range of audiences./ Répertoire / Orgue

per organo. Par VASKS PETERIS. Peteris Vasks has written a large number of pieces for the organ, both original works and arrangements of his own pieces which had originally been written for strings. The Riga-based composer created his ideal sound image after listening to the famous organ of the Cathedral of Riga. The basic idea of the organ work 'Cantus ad pacem' is, as with almost all of his compositions, the personal understanding of nature: the beauty of nature, on the one hand, and the destruction of nature by man, on the other hand. Symphonic Observations About Albrecht Dürer'S Apocalypse. Par MAINTZ PHILIPP. The doomsday visions of Albrecht Dürer's woodcut series 'Apocalypse with Pictures” have inspired many composers to create musical representations of the pictured events. With 'septimus angelus', Philipp Maintz follows in this tradition. However he abandons the pattern of a primarily pictorial reinterpretation of these artworks, concentrating instead on the wealth of their structural mysteries. In the Foreword of the score, organist Bernhard Buttmann writes: 'Both the organist and the audience are seen as subjects of the musical happening and become its focal point. Just as Dürer's richness of detail will only reveal itself after lengthy, meditative observation, Philipp Maintz' 'septimus angelus” requires an unbiased, open-minded, and perpetually fresh listening process that should correspond to a colorful interpretation with an openness to new sound experiments. Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 6 Clavierübung III / Schübler-Choräle / Canonische Veränderungen über 'Vom Himmel hoch' - ed. by Werner Breig Bach Organ Works Printed During the Composer's Lifetime Volume 6 contains the chorale-related organ works that Bach personally had printed: the Dritte Theil der Clavier Übung was published (for organists) in 1739; the Sechs Choräle von verschiedener Art (Schübler-Choräle) and the Canonische Veränderungen were released in separate editions most likely in 1747/48. None of these collections had from the start the appearance which the composer considered as valid in the end. For this reason, Werner Breig focuses in particular on questions of origin in his introduction. Fundamental findings on the genesis of the Clavier Übung III were made only after the publication of the work in the Neue Bach-Ausgabe. The basically unproblematic state of the sources means that this volume contains no CD-ROM with supplementary materials. From 1772 onward, Mozart wrote 17 short single movement works called Epistle Sonatas , designed to be played in the Eucharist service between the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle Sonata in C (K.336) was the last of these, written in 1780. Shortly afterwards the Archbishop decreed that a motet or hymn should be sung instead, and they fell into disuse. The Epistle Sonata in C was originally scored for two Violins, Basso Continuo, and Baroque Organ. It has been arranged for solo Organ (with pedals) by Nigel Davison. / Orgue

Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 5 Sonatas / Trios / Concertos - ed. by Pieter Dirksen Organ Works Based on Compositions by Bach and Others Genres such as sonata, trio and concerto were initially uncommon in the keyboard music of the early 18th century. Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. Moreover, the CD-ROM offers eight arrangements of trio movements by Bach made by others. In his detailed introduction, Pieter Dirksen discusses various aspects of these pieces' origins, inasmuch as they help us better understand the works. The organist will especially welcome the comments on performance practice and registration.
