Three Autumn
Sketches after a
Watercolor by Maria
Willscher (2017) are
dedicated to Hans-Peter
Bahr. The music is
inspired by a watercolor
painting by Maria
(Neumann) Willscher
(1922-1998) entitled
Herbststimmung. The three
movements explore moods
and colors of autumn as
reflected in the
painting. In the first
movement, Herbststimmung
(Autumn Mood), a musical
line falls under gentle
undulation. A central
section is a wistful
chorale. The second
movement, Herbstfarben
(Autumn Colors), reflects
on the subtle variety and
gradations of autumn
colors with constantly
shifting armonic colors.
The final movement,
Sonnenuntergang (Sunset),
is inspired by the
serenely beautiful colors
of an autumn sunset,
imagining the sun's
departing rays
illuminating the autumn
landscape.

Three
Sound-Poems after
Paintings by Andreas
Willscher (2017) are
dedicated to organist
Philip Hartmann and the
art-loving community of
the Pauluskirche in Ulm,
Germany. The music is
inspired by three
paintings by German
composer (and artist)
Andreas Willscher (b.
1955). The pieces take
their musical shapes and
colors from the specific
details of the paintings.
The three paintings
represent different
styles: a landscape, a
religious theme, and an
abstract. The first
movement, Sonnenfeld (Sun
Field), is inspired by a
bright painting of the
sun illuminating the
green field behind the
composer's small house in
Sainte-Radegonde
(Dordogne/Perigord,
France). A resplendent
and majestic section of
full sun harmonies
surrounds a middle
section with more motion.
The second movement,
Gebet des Hl. Franziskus
(Prayer of St. Francis),
is inspired by a painting
showing St. Francis of
Assisi in prayer. Francis
has been a frequent theme
in Willscher's music
since his appointment at
a young age as organist
of St. Francis Church in
Hamburg. The third
movement, Laetare
(Rejoice), is inspired by
an vibrant abstract
painting comprised of
bold colors. The
alternation of the blocks
of rich color are
mirrored in the block
harmonic shifts in the
movement, which is a moto
perpetuo, building
towards the organ's
fullest sounds.

The
cantata O God, what glut
of care and pain BWV 58,
which Bach subtitled
Dialogus and wrote for
the Sunday after New
Year, limits itself
accordingly to the dialog
couple consisting of
soprano and bass; further
soloists or a choir are
not required. In the
framing movements, the
dialog takes on the form
of a chorale arrangement:
the soprano presents a
cantus firmus whose words
are consolingly commented
on by the bass. Both the
expansive chorale
arrangements leave room
for an aria which is
framed by two
recitatives. The cantata
was composed for the
Sunday after New Year
1727, but the received
form is from a subsequent
performance that took
place six or seven years
later. For this
performance, Bach not
only expanded the
instrumentation but also
replaced an entire aria.
Later, he assigned the
cantata to his annual
cycle of chorale
cantatas, probably due to
its high proportion of
chorales; this Sunday was
missing in that annual
cycle as there was no
Sunday between New Year
and Epiphany in 1725.

The
organ is the instrument
on which the young
Giacomo Puccini began his
career as a musician.
Through the rediscovery
of a considerable number
of hand-written pieces,
which he composed after
1870 as part of his
duties as organist in the
churches of Lucca,
several primary sources
are now available. These
give an insight into the
beginnings of his musical
activities which have
only been known about
from anecdotes from his
first biographers until
now. Puccini's organ
repertoire includes works
which were typical for
liturgical organ music at
that time: sonatas for
the main sections of the
mass, versets which were
substituted for Gregorian
chant, marches, which
were played after the
mass (exceptionally even
waltzes), and even a
pastorale for Christmas
time. This music was
written with the sound of
instruments made in
Tuscany in mind. These
have just one manual, a 8
foot Principale register
and a small pedalboard
always coupled to the
manual. In addition there
were several solo stops
divided into bass and
soprano.Puccini
contributed with
originality to the
renewal of Italian organ
practice, which began in
his day to discard its
operatic style in favor
of a style more suited to
the liturgy.

Composer
and organist, Joseph
Bonnet (1884-1944) is
considered one of the
most major French pipe
organ players. It is no
surprise, therefore, that
his Concert Variations
for Organ are very well
informed. Following his
studies at the Paris
Conservatoire, Bonnet
took over as concert
organist at the
institution. Concert
Variations for Organ was
compiled in 1906, soon
after his graduation. The
work begins with a
helpful index of the
organ registrations and
performance directions.
Concert Variations begins
with a virtuosic,
cadenza-like theme in E
minor. Following this,
four variations are
heard, all containing
contrast in organ sound,
tonality and exploited
melody and rhythm. For
all advanced, aspiring
organists, Bonnet's
Concert Variations is an
essential addition to the
repertoire.

It
is no coincidence that
the Toccata from Widor's
Vth Organ Symphony is his
best-known composition.
Who can resist its
thrilling verve? Not only
this, but also the other
movements of this unique
work of the organ
repertoire win you over
immediately - the first
with its march-like,
majestic, much-varied
theme; the second with
its wonderfully elegiac
oboe melody, flowing
along over staccato
sixteenth notes; and the
two slow movements, of
which the melancholy,
almost static Adagio
forms the greatest
contrast imaginable to
the following triumphal
Toccata. The Carus Urtext
edition is based on the
Paris edition of 1928/29,
the last one to be
published during Widor's
lifetime. The corrections
which the composer made
after the publication of
this edition have also
been taken into

this, earlier editions

Widor's
early organ symphonies
op. 13 have a quite
special character because
of their suite-like
structure. The
six-movement Symphony II
also combines different
types of movement in an
unusual way; for example,
it includes a Praeludium
Circulare, which explores
all the twelve keys, a
Salve Regina based on the
Gregorian antiphon of the
same name, and a grand
Toccata as the Finale, an
interesting precursor of
the famous Toccata from
the 5th Symphony. The
Carus edition is based on

Radegund
Variations (2017) was
written for and is
dedicated to Hartmut
Siebmanns, cantor and
organist in Possneck, in
the Thuringia region of
Germany. This work was
inspired by the life of
Radegund (ca. 520-587),
who was a Thuringian
princess (and later
Frankish queen) most
famous for founding the
Abbey of the Holy Cross
in Poitiers, France. The
piece begins with an
original theme: its
contemporary view of
ancient modality
represents looking back
from the present time
into Radegund's era. The
theme is followed by six
contrasting variations,
inspiration for which are
drawn from events in
Radegund's life: her
marriage and joining the
Frankish court (1st
variation); her flight
from the court (after the
murder of her brother) to
seek protection from the
church (2nd variation);
her devotion to the needy
(3rd variation); her
friendship with the poet
Venantius Fortunatus and
her commissioning of his
sacred poem Vexilla Regis
(4th variation); her
gifts of healing (5th
variation); and the
building of the abbey
(6th variation).

Lemare's
compositions are uneven
in quality, but the best
are still active in the
repertoire. The Toccata
di Concerto is certainly
full of fireworks and has
the capacity to show the
abilities of a great
Organ. The upper parts
have plenty of French
toccata style, but the
theme in the pedals gives
the piece substance, as
does the romantic,
chromatic interlude in
the middle of the
work.Organ virtuoso and
composer Edwin Lemare was
the world's highest-paid
Organist at the height of
his career in the early
1900's, drawing bravos
from ctritics and the
crowds who queued around
the block to hear this
most famous of Organists.
After having served as a

he began the life of a
travelling recitalist,
beginning with a
hundred-recital tour of
the USA and Canada in
1900, a career that
continued until the stock

Lemare was also virtuosic
in his ability to

Mendel
ssohn's setting of Psalm
98 was written in a few
weeks to satisfy a
commission in his new
position as general music
director of Prussia and
was premiered by the
Berlin Cathedral Choir on
1 January 1844. As he
neither released the work
for publication nor
produced a vocal score,
his psalm setting did not
appear in print until
after his
death.
For this
edition the authoritative
Mendelssohn specialist
John Michael Cooper drew
primarily on the
autograph score with its
many subsequent
corrections and
amendments. In this way
it differs from many
other editions, which
tend to treat the
autograph as a
subordinate source.
Rounding off the edition
are an informative
Foreword and a detailed
Critical Commentary. The
piano reduction is based
on the first printed
edition, published by F.
Kistner and Evers & Co.
in 1851.
