March 28, 2018This work
(A Breath of the
Untimely) was first
written for solo Flute
and dedicated to Aurele
Nicolet. Its bears the
subtitle Lament on the
Loss of Musical Thought -
some Madrigals for Solo
Flute or Flute with any
other Instruments. This
serves as a playing
instruction but doubles
at the same time as an
outmoded programme: it
refers back to the
musical origin of the
opening lamenting motif,
a tradition which was
once of its time but is
not of our time - namely
the Lamento genre which
gave the title to the
Chaconne in Purcell's
opera Dido and Aeneas.
Almost simultaneously I
wrote a second version
for Piano (for Piano
one-and-a-half hands),
which already formulates
possible approaches for
the performer, in some
detail, to the indicated,
quasi-canonic version of
the piece in the
programme. The multiple
version Ein Hauch von
Unzeit III realizes a
concrete version of a
formal state which floats
between strict canon and
aleatoric principles:
each of the musicians who
are spread throughout the
hall introduces their own
idiomatic translation of
the flute part. And so
the music exists,
omnipresent, not only
spatially throughout the
hall, but also formally
in a sort of fluctuating
simultaneity. For that
reason, it was my express
wish to any potential
interpreter that they
should construct entirely
their own version of the
piece. A healthy number
of musicians have
responded to my
suggestion - versions of
the piece have now been
made for guitar
(Cornelius Schwehr,
Gunther Schneider),
accordion (Hugo Noth),
double bass (Fernando
Grillo), violin
(Hansheinz Schneeberger),
viola, violoncello, and
double bass (trio basso,
Koln), violoncello
(Michael Bach), trombone
(Andrew Digby) and,
created by myself, a sung
version for voice (to
words by Georg Wilhelm
Friedrich Hegel und Max
Bense), and for viola.The
most important
requirement for the whole
piece is absolute
stillness, which should
as far as possible
emanate from the
performer. The pauses are
occasionally in this
respect the most
important element. These
may, if one can find the
necessary stillness,
become very long.Ein

French
organist and composer,
Marcel Dupré
(1886-1971) is also
remembered as a
significant pedagogue.
However, his prominence
within the organ
repertoire remains
absolute with sublime
works, including his
Passion Symphony.
Dupré studied at
the Paris Conservatoire
with Louis Vierne and
Charles-Marie Widor,
where he won prizes for
piano, organ and fugue,
as well as the Grand Prix
de Rome. He was a famous
organ virtuoso and was
able to perform the
entire works composed for
the instrument by J. S.
Bach from memory.
Dupré's Op. 23,
the Passion Symphony for
Organ is made up of
four movements depicting
the life of Christ; 1)
The World awaiting the
Saviour, 2) Nativity, 3)
Crucifixion, and 4)
Resurrection. All of the
movements display a high
degree of virtuosic
technique and musical
integrity. Dupré's
compositions and didactic
works remain important to
organists today and his
Passion Symphony
is no exception.

Reiner
Schuhenn’s mass
setting for mixed choir
only requires one
male-voice part. The
setting includes the
standard parts of the
mass: Kyrie, Gloria,
Sanctus, and Agnus Dei
(the Credo has been
omitted for liturgical
reasons, since this part
is intended for the
congregation). The power
of rhythm, fast time
signature changes, and
ostinati characterize the
Gloria and Sanctus
movements, whereas the
Kyrie and the Agnus Dei
are more melodically
orientated. Either an
organ or a piano can be
used as the accompanying
keyboard instruments,
while the Cologne Mass
can be performed without
an accompaniment at
all.

Song
of Hope, composed by Kay
Johannsen the Kantor of
the Stiftskirche in
Stuttgart in 2016, is a
Fantasia in G minor based
on a six-measure melody.
It is improvisatory in
style and has a
melancholy basic
character. Over the
course of the work, the
melodic idea is varied
rhythmically several
times, and is heard in
the treble, tenor and
bass registers. Against a
quiet basic pulse, the
accompanying harmonies
appear in the manuals and
pedals mostly in subtly
matching rhythms,
reminiscent of a
saxophone soloist with a
discreet supporting jazz
band. The dynamic of the
piece grows from piano to
a fundamental forte, and
for the conclusion a fine
pianissimo is required.
Song of Hope is composed
for two-manual organ,
with a duration of
four-and-a-half minutes.
The expressive harmonies
and the hidden swing of
the music communicate
directly with audiences,
including those with less
musical experience.

Organ
transcription of Anthony
Payne's 2006 orchestral
completion from Elgar's
sketches. Robert Gower
comments, Working from
the orchestral score
confirms Payne's musical
intuition in taking
fragments and developing
them into an entirely
convincing whole, one
imbued with Elgarian
spirit and characterised
through the economical
precision of his own art.
Here, intellectual and
artistic integrity
combine to construct
overall architecture in
which not a note is
wasted, painstaking care
is evident in the subtle
details of instrumental
coloring, and where there
is thrilling rhythmic
forward propulsion. In
saluting the skills of
both composers, I have
sought to open out for
organists the excitement
and sincerity of their
work, being designed for
performance not only on
larger organs with a full
range of orchestral
color, but also made
entirely feasible for
performance on smaller
two-manual
instruments..

Chorale
settings form a central
part of Telemann's
oeuvre. His 1754 setting
of the church hymn
Christus, der ist mein
Leben, based on Melchoir
Vulpius' melody from the
Hamburg Hymnal, is
especially well-suited to
display his mastery in
depicting the words of
the chorale. The
so-called Ausfullungsbass
(a vocal bass added to
the principal bass in
tutti passages) was
probably necessitated by
the acoustical properties
of Hamburg's
churches.
This
is the first Urtext

successful chorale
setting which is based on
Georg Philipp Telemann
Musical Works. The score
contains a realisation of

As
part of the Hannenheim
Edition, the pianist
Moritz Ernst also
presents, in addition to
the anthology of all the
surviving piano sonatas
of Arnold Schoenberg's
master-class pupil, the
edition of Hannenheim's
two previously known
organ works. The early
Phantasieis imbued with a
late Romantic harmony
interspersed with
chromaticisms, which
reveal influences of
Wagner and Strauss, but
also of French organ
romanticism. More typical
of Hannenheim's personal
style is the classical
three-movement Sonata
with its all-pervading
serial technique; the
last movement presents
itself as an extensive
passacaglia with 10
variations and is steeped
in complex polyphony.
