Sonata
Eroica, Op. 94 (1930) is
a melodious piece
composed by Joseph Jongen
for great organ.
Dedicated to Joseph
Bonnet who was the
organist of the St
Eustache Church in Paris,
this piece is quite
difficult (upper
intermediate/advanced
level) and requires the
use of different keyboard
divisions and pedals.
Lasting around 16
minutes, this wonderful
work is quite
architectural and will
astonish you by its
grandeur. It is the
perfect piece to include
in a recital. Joseph
Jongen was a Belgian
organist, composer and
professor of harmony and
counterpoint. He won the
Belgian Prix de Rome and
composed numerous pieces
including music chamber
works, symphonies,
concertos and songs. His
most famous piece is the
Symphonie Concertante
(1926).

The cantata
Sei Lob und Ehr dem
hochsten Gut (All glory
to the Lord of Lords) BWV
117 is one of a small
group of Bach's chorale
cantatas which use
exclusively the text of
the chorale, including in
the three recitatives and
three arias. Only the
autograph score of the
cantata survives;
although this enables an
approximate dating to be
made (c. 1730), it does
not give the occasion for
which the cantata was
written. The choice of
chorale may indicate it
was composed for a
wedding. Recently it has
been suggested that the
occasion for its
composition was the
birthday of the Duke of
Weissenfels in 1731; but
there is no firm evidence
to support either theory.
The cantata opens with an
extended movement for
chorus in which Bach
contrasts the concertante
orchestra with festive,
almost homophonic choral
writing. This chorus
movement is repeated at
the end. A simple chorale
movement which comes
fourth indicates that the
nine-movement cantata was
performed in two
sections. Score available

The cantata
is one of the few
surviving vocal works
which Wilhelm Friedemann
Bach composed during the
eighteen years which he
spent as organist and
director of music at the
Marktkirche in Halle
(1746-1764). This
cantata, published here
for the first time in
more than 250 years, was
written to introduce the
autumn sermons in 1752. A
musically and technically
demanding composition, it
consists of two
substantial choral
movements, partly
concertante and partly
polyphonic, based on two
biblical utterances. They
surround a sensitive,
while at the same time
strictly contrapuntal,
duet for soprano and alto
with basso continuo in
which God's sweet
teaching for the soul is
described as the true
manna of the faithful,
forming a link with the
sermons which are to
follow. In the
compactness of the
musical construction and
its intensity of
expression W. F. Bach was
clearly following in the
footsteps of his father
in this work. Score and

Matthias
Weckmann, born in
Niederdorla near
Muhlhausen (Thuringia) in
1616 and died in Hamburg
in 1674, was trained as a
musician by Heinrich
Schutz in Dresden among
others. He worked as an
organist in Dresden
(Schlosskirche) and
Hamburg (St. Jakobi). It
is particularly for the
Jakobi organ that he
wrote his elaborate and
virtuoso organ works. Our
new edition in the
renowned series 'Masters
of the North German Organ
School' faithfully
transfers the works which
survived in letter
tablature, providing a
reliably edited urtext.
Volume 1 contains the
cantus firmus-based
works, 8 authentic verse
cycles with 2-7 movements
each in which chorale
melodies such as 'Es ist
das Heil uns kommen her',
'Gelobet seist du, Jesu
Christ)' or the
'Magnificat' are varied,
as well as a cycle on
'Ach wir armen Sunder'
attributed to Weckmann.
Volume 2 proves him to a
master of concertante
organ music, containing 3
works with pedal
(Fantasia, Fuga and
Praeambulum in D) as well
as several moderately
difficult works to be
played on manuals only (6
toccatas, 5 canzonas).
Reliable standard edition
of the music by one of
the great (North) German
organ masters.

Hermann
Schroeder's abundant
oeuvre in the field of
chorale-bound organ music
is much less known among
organists than his free -
especially the
concertante - organ
works, although Hermann
Schroeder as an organist
felt particularly bound
to liturgy and liturgical
singing. And according to
him, any liturgical organ
music should always bear
a direct relation to
singing. The purpose of
the present anthology is
to provide the player a
representative selection
of Schroeder's chorale
arrangements. Most of
these chorales are
relatively short and of
medium difficulty at
most. The chorale melody
can be heard well most of
the time so that the
pieces are ideal for
being used in church
services. In the
alphabetical index, the
beginnings of song titles
are accompanied by the
corresponding number from
Gotteslob (GL) or the
Protestant Hymnal for
better orientation.
