This volume
includes organ works
based on chorales
surviving in various
sources. Some of these
works were not previously
included in theNew Bach
Editioneither for reasons
of doubtful authenticity
or because they were
unknown until now. Two
pieces from this
repertoire - the two
arrangements ofWie schon
leuchtet der
MorgensternBWV 739 and
764 - stem from one of
Bach's autograph
manuscripts. They had
been omitted until
recently because of
doubts of
authenticity.

Song
of Hope, composed by Kay
Johannsen the Kantor of
the Stiftskirche in
Stuttgart in 2016, is a
Fantasia in G minor based
on a six-measure melody.
It is improvisatory in
style and has a
melancholy basic
character. Over the
course of the work, the
melodic idea is varied
rhythmically several
times, and is heard in
the treble, tenor and
bass registers. Against a
quiet basic pulse, the
accompanying harmonies
appear in the manuals and
pedals mostly in subtly
matching rhythms,
reminiscent of a
saxophone soloist with a
discreet supporting jazz
band. The dynamic of the
piece grows from piano to
a fundamental forte, and
for the conclusion a fine
pianissimo is required.
Song of Hope is composed
for two-manual organ,
with a duration of
four-and-a-half minutes.
The expressive harmonies
and the hidden swing of
the music communicate
directly with audiences,
including those with less
musical experience.

March 28, 2018This work
(A Breath of the
Untimely) was first
written for solo Flute
and dedicated to Aurele
Nicolet. Its bears the
subtitle Lament on the
Loss of Musical Thought -
some Madrigals for Solo
Flute or Flute with any
other Instruments. This
serves as a playing
instruction but doubles
at the same time as an
outmoded programme: it
refers back to the
musical origin of the
opening lamenting motif,
a tradition which was
once of its time but is
not of our time - namely
the Lamento genre which
gave the title to the
Chaconne in Purcell's
opera Dido and Aeneas.
Almost simultaneously I
wrote a second version
for Piano (for Piano
one-and-a-half hands),
which already formulates
possible approaches for
the performer, in some
detail, to the indicated,
quasi-canonic version of
the piece in the
programme. The multiple
version Ein Hauch von
Unzeit III realizes a
concrete version of a
formal state which floats
between strict canon and
aleatoric principles:
each of the musicians who
are spread throughout the
hall introduces their own
idiomatic translation of
the flute part. And so
the music exists,
omnipresent, not only
spatially throughout the
hall, but also formally
in a sort of fluctuating
simultaneity. For that
reason, it was my express
wish to any potential
interpreter that they
should construct entirely
their own version of the
piece. A healthy number
of musicians have
responded to my
suggestion - versions of
the piece have now been
made for guitar
(Cornelius Schwehr,
Gunther Schneider),
accordion (Hugo Noth),
double bass (Fernando
Grillo), violin
(Hansheinz Schneeberger),
viola, violoncello, and
double bass (trio basso,
Koln), violoncello
(Michael Bach), trombone
(Andrew Digby) and,
created by myself, a sung
version for voice (to
words by Georg Wilhelm
Friedrich Hegel und Max
Bense), and for viola.The
most important
requirement for the whole
piece is absolute
stillness, which should
as far as possible
emanate from the
performer. The pauses are
occasionally in this
respect the most
important element. These
may, if one can find the
necessary stillness,
become very long.Ein

Kare
n Beaumont brings us this
highly flexible
collection in response to
the growing demand for
shorter worship service
voluntaries. Each of the
seven postludes are less
than a minute and a half
in length and contain
interludes that can serve
as shorter works or
transitions between
multiple postludes. The
pieces are thoughtfully
arranged to flow
seamlessly from one to
the next. While each
composition can be played
with a single manual,
suggestions for
incorporating pedal or
multiple manuals are also
provided. Additionally,
these pieces are
adaptable for use on a
piano or other keyboard
instrument.

Hermann
Schroeder (1904-1984)
studied with Heinrich
Lemacher and Walter
Braunfels and became
Professor of Composition
and Music Theory at the
Academy of Music in
Cologne. From the end of
the 1920s he made an
important contribution to
the new stylistic
developments in organ
music His smaller-scale
compositions in
particular, such as the
Preambles and Interludes
(1954) or the Little
Preludes and Intermezzos
(1932, ED 2221) point in
new directions: the
constraints of form have
evidently been helpful in
the process of breaking
away from Romanticism;
clarity and formal
precision take the place
of monumental grandeur of
form. Suitable for
concert or liturgical
performance.

based on the chant, this
work begins simply with
flutes and mutations in
duet * detailed
registrations,
appropriate for small or
large instruments, as
well as manual

execution of this work
very direct *
registration indications
and harmonic colors
increase as the piece
gradually builds * final
section with octave
chords and strong pedal
foundation carries the
piece to a dynamic climax
* tempo slows by
increments in the final
measures, leading to the
final modal cadence * a
passionate instrumental
expression of the text:
printing the text of this
hymn in a program or
bulletin
Musically,
this is a rather
interesting piece with
harmonic language that is
more advanced than one
might normally use in
services, but here one
can allways follow the
hymn tune. The
registration is highly
colorful, using at 16'
Quintaton played an
octave higher, or
substituting an 8' and 2
2/3'. As in the chorale
preludes mentioned
earlier, this work, too,
creates a continuing
crescendo to the end.
Harmonically, this work
makes use of some
interesting
ideas-mirroring short
sections of the hymn tune
as a motivic device,
short canonic imitation,
etc. Technically, it is
fairly easy reading until
about halfway, when close
attention must be paid to
accidentals. The last
page will require some
working of fingering in
the right hand to
maintain the legato sense
of the phrase. - The
Journal of the
Association of Anglican
Musicians March 2006.
