Text: William
Bartholomew.
Mendel
ssohn's setting of Psalm
98 was written in a few
weeks to satisfy a
commission in his new
position as general music
director of Prussia and
was premiered by the
Berlin Cathedral Choir on
1 January 1844. As he
neither released the work
for publication nor
produced a vocal score,
his psalm setting did not
appear in print until
after his
death.
For this
edition the authoritative
Mendelssohn specialist
John Michael Cooper drew
primarily on the
autograph score with its
many subsequent
corrections and
amendments. In this way
it differs from many
other editions, which
tend to treat the
autograph as a
subordinate source.
Rounding off the edition
are an informative
Foreword and a detailed
Critical Commentary. The
piano reduction is based
on the first printed
edition, published by F.
Kistner and Evers & Co.
in 1851.

Confl
uence was commissioned by
the Organ Artist Series
of Pittsburgh in
celebration of its
twentieth anniversary in
1999. Christa Rakich gave
the premier at the
closing concert of the
season at Calvary
Episcopal Church by in
April of 1999. It has
been performed frequently
since that time. The
title was given to honor
the joining together or
confluence of the three
rivers of Pittsburgh: the
Allegheny, the
Monongalela, and the
Ohio. Confluence is a
curious hybrid related to
both the sonata and rondo
forms. It is of the ABABA
design with the final A
quite extended by
polyphonic games and a
very noisy and triumphant
epilogue. The first idea
is driving, rhythmic,
nervous and agitated. The
second is quiet, gentle
and pastoral, that slowly
moves in its mysterious
ways, closing with a
plaintive row of a dozen
different pitches. The
composer delights in the
challenge of making tone
rows as approachable and
sing-able as possible.
Both ideas make slightly
varied restatements. At
the end, fugal
exploitation of the first
idea is followed by that
row, entering with
stentorian grandeur in
full pedal, heralding the
triumphant close. This
row, like the month of
March is referred to
frequently as coming in
like a Iamb, going out
like a lion.

Chorale
settings form a central
part of Telemann's
oeuvre. His 1754 setting
of the church hymn
Christus, der ist mein
Leben, based on Melchoir
Vulpius' melody from the
Hamburg Hymnal, is
especially well-suited to
display his mastery in
depicting the words of
the chorale. The
so-called Ausfullungsbass
(a vocal bass added to
the principal bass in
tutti passages) was
probably necessitated by
the acoustical properties
of Hamburg's
churches.
This
is the first Urtext
edition of this highly
successful chorale
setting which is based on
Georg Philipp Telemann
Musical Works. The score
contains a realisation of
the continuo
part.

The
American musical patrons
Mildred and Robert Wood
Bliss were considering
which distinguished
composer to commission to
create a work in
celebration of their 30th
wedding anniversary in
1938. The couple had made
the acquaintance of Igor
Stravinsky in April the
preceding year at the
premiere of his ballet
Jeu de Cartes in New York
and had subsequently
invited the composer to
their country home
'Dumbarton Oaks' in
Washington D.C. to talk
about a new composition.
Stravinsky only just
managed to complete the
work in time for the
anniversary celebrations:
its date of completion
was also the date of its
first performance. For
his classically styled
three-movement work, he
selected the title
Concerto in E flat,
adding the subtitle
Dumbarton Oaks as a
dedication. The structure
of the work references
the concerto grosso: it
features a soloist
ensemble which unites in
the tutti sequences but
also plays in concertino
groups during the solo
episodes. Broken chordal
structures characterise
the central movement
whereas the outer
movements are
distinguished through
their use of fugato.
Dumbarton Oaks went on to
become one of Stravinskys
mostsuccessful works,
performed widely and
delighting Mildred Bliss
so much that she
immediately issued
another commission, for
the Symphony in C. Its
composer's very public
commitment to American
cultural life helped pave
the way for Stravinskys
emigration to the USA in
1945. As early as 1952
Leif Thybo created an
arrangement for organ
which Stravinsky probably
did not know at the time
of his life.

Symphony for
Organ (2013) is cast as a
dramatic progression from
darkness into light. The
first movement, Masque,
is extremely violent and
bleak. The title is used
with a touch of
irony--for this is not a
masque of courtly
diversion, but rather a
furious struggle against
the darkness, played out
in a series of dramatic
episodes following a
Tudor-era formal design.
The ending builds to a
dramatic peak, and leaves
us in shell-shocked
silence. The second
movement, Sarabande,
begins quietly and
mournfully, and gradually
gains in fervency. A
faster middle section is
a spinning dance before
the return of the opening
music. In the coda, the
light gradually
approaches. The third
movement, Chorale, evokes
the colors of a new dawn.
The music of the first
movement's struggle
gradually becomes washed
in the blaze of morning.

Suite
circulaire (2018) for
organ is dedicated to
Elisa Williams Bickers.
The music takes a free,
contemporary approach to
the historical genre of
circulating (or
modulating) compositions,
where the basic material
moves through a variety
of keys before returning
home again. The goal is
not simply to play a
modulation game, but
rather to construct a
true musical discourse
where the varied keys are
an essential part of the
concept. The first
movement, Praeludium, is
bright in character.
Besides moving through
varied keys, the movement
is also animated with
various looping patterns
that provide another link
to the circulating
concept. The second
movement, Ricercare,
takes its content very
literally from the title,
which means to search
out. Instead of being a
proto-fugue, like many
ricercares from the late
Renaissance or early
Baroque, the music
searches through the keys
by means of a wandering
melody and a modulating
accompaniment. The third
movement, Toccata, is
slightly manic in
character. The syncopated
theme heard at the start
animates the movement as
it moves through both
tonal, modal, and
bitonal/modal harmonies
before reaching an
excited conclusion. (When
the suite is performed on
an organ tuned in an
unequal, circulating
temperament, there is an
additional circular
effect provided by the
quite varied key colors
that are heard as the
material moves through
them.)Organ Duration:

Josef
Gabriel Rheinberger
dedicated his 9th Organ
Sonata (composed in May
1885) to Alexandre
Guilmant, the
indefatigable
concertizing virtuoso who
had already given the
first Paris performance
of Rheinberger's 1st
Organ Concerto (in F

opulent harmonies,
conspicuously frequent
tempo changes, and chords
which are a true delight
when played on a
Cavaille-Coll organ, the
rhapsodic Fantasie at the
beginning of the 3rd
movement certainly lives
up to its name. The
separate edition is taken

The
partita is in five
movements, each based on
a text verse which is
quoted before the
movement. The first
movement, smooth and
flowing, depicts
starlight, everlasting
light, and a call to
Christ. The second
movement pastorale takes
its cue from the text
...not as a monarch, but
the child of Mary... and
quotes GREENSLEEVES. The
third movement is a firm
declamation, At your
great name...all knees
must bend. The fourth
movement is strong and
dramatic with chromatic
flourishes painting the
text, ...holy
might...defend us...from
all assaults. The final
movement is a fiery
toccata over a pedal
melody.

A key
work in Reger's organ
production from the time
of its first publication
in 1902 up to today, the
famous F-minor
Passacaglia from Op. 63
has cast its spell on
generations of organ
lovers. The dark bass
strides quietly through
the depths, persistently
and secretly like time
itself; a ghostly breath
murmurs about the heights
and rustles through light
leaves; and from within
emerges a voice which
rises and falls in a
seemingly aimless manner,
and which speaks more
than it sings...
(Gustav-Robert Tornow on
the 8th variation of the
Passacaglia in his 1907
introduction to the
work).

As its
title indcates, this is a
miniature symphony, its
structure compacted as
much as possible. The
classical form is
respected, dwon to the
smallest details, so that
the various development
sections lead to a
recapitulation of the two
themes and to a more
asservative conclusion.
Throughout the work the
style is extremely sparse
and straightforward. The
nostalgia expressed by
the theme of the second
movement leads us towards
effects of perspective
that modify the light
thrown on the melody, at
first distand and soon
more insistent, more
dominant, before dying
away in the gentle
mist.The third movement
is somewhat facetious and
sly. Despite its
brilliantly luminous
progress, the ending is
nostalgic, whimsical and,
once more, humorous.
