Text: William
Bartholomew.
Mendel
ssohn's setting of Psalm
98 was written in a few
weeks to satisfy a
commission in his new
position as general music
director of Prussia and
was premiered by the
Berlin Cathedral Choir on
1 January 1844. As he
neither released the work
for publication nor
produced a vocal score,
his psalm setting did not
appear in print until
after his
death.
For this
edition the authoritative
Mendelssohn specialist
John Michael Cooper drew
primarily on the
autograph score with its
many subsequent
corrections and
amendments. In this way
it differs from many
other editions, which
tend to treat the
autograph as a
subordinate source.
Rounding off the edition
are an informative
Foreword and a detailed
Critical Commentary. The
piano reduction is based
on the first printed
edition, published by F.
Kistner and Evers & Co.
in 1851.

On the
occasion of the
quincentenary of
Reformation Day in 2017,
the composer Enjott
Schneider thoroughly
studied Martin Luther the
individual and all his
contradictions. The
result is a brilliant,
demanding organ symphony
which is perfect for
concerts on the subject
of Reformation and Martin
Luther.The composer
describes the five
movements of the symphony
as follows:'1st
movement:Wir glauben all
an einen Gott with its
quintuplet-like beginning
is very Gregorian in
style, outlining the
range of Lutheran
emotionalism between the
Middle Ages and the
modern era. The
irrationality of faith
ultimately has priority
over any thought and
evidence. At the
beginning of the
movement, sounds of
knocking on wood remind
of the nailing of the
Ninety-Five Theses to the
doors of churches in
Wittenberg. The chorale
melody sometimes hides
with an almost rough
medieval saltarello,
referring to Luther's
robustness and vitality
with which he knew to
carry away even common
people.2nd movement:In
1530, the electoral
prince of Saxony
presented to Luther at
Coburg Castle the golden
signet ring with the
Luther rose which became
the symbol of his
theology of grace. A
white heart with black
cross is fixed on a
five-petalled rose. To
him, white is the colour
of angels and ghosts,
black stands for the pain
of crucification: The
just shall live by faith,
but by faith in the
Crucified. But the fact
that the rose and the
heart are the dominating
symbols shows how
Catholic Marian piety
remained an ingredient of
Luther's spirituality
throughout his life. In
line with the dominant
five-petal structure of
the rose, this movement
was composed, to a large
extent, in accordance
with the floating,
lyrical rhythm in 5/8
time.3rd movement:The
omnipresence of death and
dying - from the plague
and war to the
never-ending dangers of
daily life - was an
essential part of the
world view of that time.
Fears ensued that might
heighten into the
grotesque, e.g. in the
pictures of Hieronymus
Bosch. The Danse macabre
was a popular motif in
those years. Luther's
chorale Mitten wir im
Leben sind / mit dem Tod
umfangen from 1524
(Enchiridion from Erfurt)
is based on the Gregorian
chant Media vita in morte
sumus created in France
around 750 and, with its
idea of transience,
inspired a simplistic
air.4th movement:The
famous confession
delivered at the Diet of
Worms in 1521, I stand
here and can say no more.
God help me. Amen, are
not Luther's words but
the version later used as
text for a pamphlet.
However, it represents
quite plainly the
straightforwardness and
inevitability of his
mission. Musically, it
was made into a perpetuum
mobile, i.e. a dogged,
ostinato and never-ending
musical air.5th
movement:The Mighty
Fortress, on the other
hand, is one of the great
symbols of Martin Luther
which, with its shining C
major key, embodies the
Protestant ideology and
willful nature of the
Reformation unlike any
other song. Heinrich
Heine called it the
Marseille anthem of the
Reformation, Friedrich
Engels the Marseillaise
of the Peasants' Wars.
This disputability is not
thought through to the
end but rather
interrupted: With a
jubilant birdcall version
of the melody, the finale
shows a rather
chamber-music-like side
of the ideals of freedom
of Christians.'.

These
Carol-Preludes were
written in 2008, but the
idea was in the
composer's mind for many
years before this.
Essentially, they revive
the old style of the
Chorale- Prelude, but
using carol tunes instead
of hymns or chorales.
They are derived from
German, French and
English melodies - some
of the German tunes were
found in my mother's old
school songbook from her
schooldays in Germany
after the First World
War.

Olivier
Messiaen (1908-1992) is
known for his unique
composition style.
Incorporating complex
rhythms, harmony and
melodies, The Ascension
for Organ is no exception
to the composer's
popular, distinctive
style. The Ascension was
originally composed for
orchestra by Messiaen in
1932-1933. The composer
described the work as
Four Symphonic
Meditations and the
sections are; 1) Majesty
of Christ praying that
His Father should glorify
Him, 2) Serene Alleluias
from a soul longing for
Heaven, 3) Alleluia on
the Trumpet, Alleluia on
the Cymbal, and 4) Prayer
from Christ ascending
towards His Father.
Messiaen arranged The
Ascension for solo organ
a year later. The first,
second and fourth
movements are
arrangements of the
orchestral version,
however, the composer
created a new third
movement; Outburst of joy
from a soul before the
Glory of Christ, which is
its own glory. The
Ascension is essential to
all advanced organists
seeking to expand and
vary their
repertoire.

Incorporating complex

Pentecost is no exception
to the composer's
popular, distinctive

1949-1950, the Organ Mass
is thought to be based on
twenty years of
improvising at Saint
Trinity Church in Paris
where Messiaen was
organist. Mass of
Pentecost is in five
movements; 1) Entrance,
2) Offertory, 3)
Consecration, 4)
Communion, and 5)
Recessional. Influences
of birdsong are depicted
within the piece,
reflecting the composer's
interest in ornithology.
The first movement also
contains the use of Greek

Being a
fascinatingly unique
composer, Olivier
Messiaen pushed the
conventions of composing
to its very limits. The
composer''s music remains
ever-popular and The
Technique of my Musical
Language provides the key
and necessary knowledge
into the study of his
delightful music. Olivier
Messiaen (1908-1992) was
admitted to the Paris
Conservatoire at the mere
age of 11, where he won
many prizes. As a
passionate ornithologist,
as well as organist and
composer, many of
Messiaen''s works depict
bird song. His music is
rhythmically complex and
harmonically and
melodically distinct,
often using modes of
limited transposition. It
is for these reasons that
the composer compiled The
Technique of my Musical
Language. The book
contains text with
musical examples,
describing unique
elements of his music,
such as ametrical music,
his rhythmic notations
and his modes of limited
transposition, among many
others. For all fans of
Messiaen, The Technique
of my Musical Language is
essential to the
understanding of the
composer''s much loved
music..

The
Temple Organist is a
series of hymn
arrangements designed to
support the sacred
reverence found in
temples of the Church of
Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints. The
songs selected for the
two volumes have been
taken directly from
approved lists of hymns
appropriate for temples.
The arrangements in this
volume, like volume 1,
are arranged to include
the harmonizations from
the 1985 hymnal, with a
variation that follows in
most cases. True to the
style of Orgain Chains,
they include interludes
to connect each hymn so
they can be played
consecutively (including
modulations that bridge
different keys
beautifully). You will
enjoy serving temple
patrons as you play these
simple, contemplative
hymn
settings.

French
composer, Jean-Louis
Florentz (1947-2004) was
a prolific student of
Olivier Messiaen.
Standing on the Sun,
composed in 1990, is an
exciting addition to the

Florentz's music is
described as having a
strong, evocative power
which keeps the clarity
of the French style. A
