Cette deuxième collaboration, un film musical, était destinée à être le véhicule pour Judy Garland le retour, après avoir été absent du film pendant 4 ans. Puisque Judy Garland ferait tous du chant, sauf pour certains travaux choral accessoire, les chansons étaient naturellement projetées avec elle à l'esprit. Arlen et Gershwin savaient qu'ils devaient créer une chanson dramatique pour Judy Garland qui lui a permis de démontrer non seulement ses capacités de fines chanter, mais aussi son flair pour agir. La chanson qu'ils ont créés était ' L'homme qui Got Away'.
