Il a suffi d'un homme pratique du théâtre de savoir qu'une note mal chanté du haut est pire que de faire sans elle. Wagner même toléré la transposition des passages plus longues parce qu'il était moins intéressé par la lettre de la partition que de l'efficacité théâtrale. [...] Le score actuel vocale va au-delà de l'édition complète [...] en ce que les Ossias mentionnés ci-dessus sont indiquées dans la partie vocale elle-même, en petites coupures. Elles concernent principalement le rôle de Tristan, mais aussi ceux d'Isolde, Brangäne et Kurwenal. Ils reposent en partie sur l'édition Tristan dans le Complete Edition, mais pour la plus grande partie de revenir à une source qui ne pouvait pas être consulté pour l'édition complète car il n'était pas encore accessible. Il s'agit d'une partition vocale de la succession du compositeur Peter Cornelius qui a été engagé par Wagner comme répétiteur aux répétitions de Vienne en 1861-1863. Que les barres ossia revenir à Wagner peut être tenu pour certain, car dans certains endroits, ils sont notés de sa propre main. I Puritani is the last work of Vincenzo Bellini: composed in nine months, from April 1834 to January 1835 (a gestation unusually long for that time), was performed for the first time in Paris, Théâtre Italien, 24 January 1835. During this period, the dramatic structure suffered radical transformations: initially structured in two acts, the work was divided into three acts just before the premiere, but on the eve of the first performance, and immediately after that, the excessive length of the title imposed the cut of three pieces and other minor sections. Simultaneously with the release for Paris, Bellini prepared a version designed for a planned exhibition for Naples at Teatro S. Carlo, whose protagonist had to be Maria Malibran and in which the part of Riccardo had to be supported by a tenor. The exhibition did not take place, as the score came late in Naples: the Neapolitan version was rediscovered and performed only in the eighties of the twentieth century. The new Critical Edition is based on the autograph, on the libretto of the first performance and on four manuscript copies produced in the context of the Théâtre Italien in the first months of life of the work, three of which contain autograph interventions (these sources are now kept at the Biblioteca Comunale in Palermo, at the Museo Civico Belliniano in Catania, at the Archivio Storico Ricordi in Milano and at the Staatsbibliothek zur Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin). In a letter of 2 January 1851, Verdi suggested for the first time Antonio Garcia Gutierrez play El Trovador as a possible subject for his new Opera: 'It seems to me very beautiful, imaginative, and full of strong situations'. Once he had settled on the subject, the composer immediately began looking for a theater in which to produce the Opera and after protracted negotiations he decided to stage Il Trovatore in Rome. The premiere occurred on 19 January 1853 at the Teatro Apollo and was an enormous success. The appreciation of the new work increased from performance to performance. The third performance was the last the composer was contractuallyobliged to attend: at the end of the evening the audience presented Verdi with two laurel wreaths. Verdi 's account of the performances, contained in a letter to his friend Clarina Maffei, was eloquent: 'They say that this Opera is too sad and that there are too many deaths. But ultimetley in life everything is death! What exists?. . . ' Notwithstanding Verdi 's pessimism, Il Trovatore circulated rapidly.
