I Puritani is the last work of Vincenzo Bellini: composed in nine months, from April 1834 to January 1835 (a gestation unusually long for that time), was performed for the first time in Paris, Théâtre Italien, 24 January 1835. During this period, the dramatic structure suffered radical transformations: initially structured in two acts, the work was divided into three acts just before the premiere, but on the eve of the first performance, and immediately after that, the excessive length of the title imposed the cut of three pieces and other minor sections. Simultaneously with the release for Paris, Bellini prepared a version designed for a planned exhibition for Naples at Teatro S. Carlo, whose protagonist had to be Maria Malibran and in which the part of Riccardo had to be supported by a tenor. The exhibition did not take place, as the score came late in Naples: the Neapolitan version was rediscovered and performed only in the eighties of the twentieth century. The new Critical Edition is based on the autograph, on the libretto of the first performance and on four manuscript copies produced in the context of the Théâtre Italien in the first months of life of the work, three of which contain autograph interventions (these sources are now kept at the Biblioteca Comunale in Palermo, at the Museo Civico Belliniano in Catania, at the Archivio Storico Ricordi in Milano and at the Staatsbibliothek zur Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin). The new reduction of Il barbiere di Siviglia is based on the critical edition of the full score by Alberto Zedda that, republished in 2009, appeared in turn as a fully revised edition - in the light of new sources and updated philological criteria - of the historic and pioneering critical edition of 1969. The 1969 Barbiere di Siviglia was based on the autograph and on manuscript and printed sources still considered primary: the copies from Giovanni Battista Cencetti (now kept at the New York Public Library, at the Bibliomediateca of Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome, at the Biblioteca Palatina in Parma and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris), the copies from Naples, Florence, the main score and vocal scores of the time, the fi rst printed libretto, many manuscript copies of Aureliano in Palmira, work in which Zedda recognized the source of the Symphony of Il Barbiere di Siviglia. To these in 2009 were added all the materials found and transcribed by Zedda after the publication of the volume of 1969. George and Ira Gershwin joined DuBose Heyward in Charleston to write the opera which had been germinating in George's imagination for several years. Porgy and Bess was George Gershwin's longest and most ambitious creation, but it was not truly successful during his lifetime. Some of the songs had achieved popularity before Gershwin's death in 1937, but the work earned real approval and favor only after the 1940 Theater Guild presentation of a slightly revised version. In a letter of 2 January 1851, Verdi suggested for the first time Antonio Garcia Gutierrez play El Trovador as a possible subject for his new Opera: 'It seems to me very beautiful, imaginative, and full of strong situations'. Once he had settled on the subject, the composer immediately began looking for a theater in which to produce the Opera and after protracted negotiations he decided to stage Il Trovatore in Rome. The premiere occurred on 19 January 1853 at the Teatro Apollo and was an enormous success. The appreciation of the new work increased from performance to performance. The third performance was the last the composer was contractuallyobliged to attend: at the end of the evening the audience presented Verdi with two laurel wreaths. Verdi 's account of the performances, contained in a letter to his friend Clarina Maffei, was eloquent: 'They say that this Opera is too sad and that there are too many deaths. But ultimetley in life everything is death! What exists?. . . ' Notwithstanding Verdi 's pessimism, Il Trovatore circulated rapidly. This volume presents the vocal score of Vivaldi's Magnificat RV 610/611 for soloists, choir, winds, strings and continuo, based on the critical edition by Michael Talbot. Probably meant for a performance at the Pietà, Vivaldi, after its first 1715 version, returned on it in two occasions at least: at the end of the 1720s and of the 1730s. Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Amongst Rameau?s stage works which have come down to us in two main versions, such as ?Dardanus? (1739, 1744), ?Platée? (1745, 1749) and ?Zoroastre? (1749, 1756), none fell into oblivion for as long a period as ?Castor et Pollux?. After the work had been premiered in 1737, not until 1754 did Rameau decide to revise it. He asked his librettist ?Gentil-Bernard? to add an act to the tragedy and to give more weight to the brotherly friendship between Castor and Pollux. The main plot remains very similar to the one of 1737, aside from the fact that the sisters Télaïre and Phébé no longer are in love - the one with Castor the other with Pollux - but rather both with Castor which is the reason why Phébé is jealous of Télaïre. Already at the beginning of the first act Pollux relinquishes his love of Télaïre to the benefit of Castor. Castor, however, is killed by Linceus and finds himself in Hades. Pollux commits to saving his brother, sacrifices his immortality and declares his willingness to take Castor?s place in Hades so that his brother and Télaïre may be reunited. Jupiter, moved by this sacrifice, frees Pollux and bestows the couple immortality by giving them a place in the zodiac. Following the editorial principles of the ?Opera omnia Rameau? (and in contrast to the 1903 edition by August Chapuis issued within the old Rameau series), both versions of ?Castor et Pollux?, the version of 1737 (OOR IV.3) and the present version of 1754 (OOR IV.23), are published in two separate volumes in their entirety. Owing to the discovery of the original performance material, today preserved at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, the second version of 1754, which up until today was in the shadow of the 1737 version, can now be presented with its more tightly woven plot in all its vigor and dramatic momentum.
