In 1774 Gluck had committed himself to supplying six stage works to the Académie Royale de Musique in Paris. This job he fulfilled partially by reworking works which had already been premiered in Vienna, such as 'Orfeo ed Euridice? (BA 5845-90).In the case of 'Alceste? which was premiered in 1776 and which was the prototype of the so-called reform opera, the composer created a completely new version. The libretto was translated from the former Italian into French and was altered at the same time, but also the music was fundamentally changed: Gluck newly composed the recitatives and rearranged, enlarged or cut scenes. The initial rejection of the work by the audience caused him to further alter the third act, for example by adding the character of Hercules as Alceste's saviour. The present reduction derives from the critical edition of the score, just published in this catalog. La Griselda, was composed and performed in Venice, in the spring of 1735, for the occasion of the Ascensiontide fair (Sensa). The task of adapting the libretto by Apostolo Zeno to the particular exigencies of the production was assigned to a young writer of comedies attached to the company led by Giuseppe Imer: Carlo Goldoni. The latter immortalized in his Mémoires his meeting with Vivaldi and the composer's inseparable prima donna, the contralto Anna Giraud, confessing to having been forced against his will to 'assassinate? Zeno's drama at the composer's whim. La Griselda was favourably received by the audience at the San Samuele theatre, remained the sole opera by Vivaldi to be staged at a theatre owned by the powerful Grimani family. The collection of nine Vedic Hymns (Op. 24) for solo Voice with Piano accompaniment marked a turning point in Holst's compositions. They were inspired by Hindu scripture and Indian raga, and first published in 1908. Vac (Speech) is the seventh movement, and is the first of the third group of hymns, where the theme shifts into the human sphere. Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer and teacher. Having studied under Stanford and Parry, he became a close friend of Vaughan Williams - they would often critique each other's work - and influenced composers such as Tippet and Britten. Donizetti's Anna Bolena premiered at Milano's Teatro Carcano during Carnival season 1830-31 is considered the composer's first major success in serious opera, which brought him to the attention of all Europe. In terms of production, in Italy he was an anomaly, in that he remained actively involved in the evolution of his works and the performances of them, and went on making modifications to those works. Written expressly for the interpretative and vocal talents of great singers like Giuditta Pasta and Giovan Battista Rubini, the historically-based 'lyrical tragedy? by librettist Felice Romani is a classic of Lombard Romanticism. The present reduction for voice and piano derives from the critical edition of the score, recently published in this catalog: is based on the autograph score, (housed in the Ricordi Archives in Milan), on the libretto for the premiere, on the first vocal scores printed editions (Lucca and Ricordi in Milan and Marquerie Frères in Paris) and additional manuscript scores with autograph additional notes (housed in Naples and Rome). This edition presents for the first time all the music composed by Donizetti, in particular the sections crossed out or replaced either immediately before or after the first performances. Par MASSENET JULES. Cendrillon (Cinderella), with a libretto by Henri Cain based on Perrault's fairytale, premiered in 1899 in Paris. Best known for composing over thirty operas, the composer, Jules Massenet (1842-1912) purposely did not attend the premiere, but received a telegram the following day from baritone Fugère recording its triumph. Incorporating the composer's sense of humour and wit, the use of recurrent motifs is subtle and often thought to be inspired by Richard Wagner. Cendrillon contains musical echoes of the 18th century, incorporating gallant music, the use of the Lute and Viola D'Amore and a series of Balletentrees. The Opera is in four acts with 19 characters and a chorus. The role of Prince Charming is a breeches role whilst the melody lines of the Fairy Godmother are characterised by trills and arpeggios.
