My
lecture of the
Winterreise does not
demand a new expressive
interpretation, but
instead systematically
exercises the freedom
which all interpreters
allow themselves
intuitively, such as:
instrumental dilation i.
e. acceleration of the
pace, transposition into
other keys and
elaboration of
characteristic color
timbres. In addition,
there are further ways of
reading; the music;
jumping around in the
text, repeating certain
lines, interrupting the
continuity, comparing
different expressions of
the same phrase ... All
these new possibilities
are subjected to my
compositional discipline
and form autonomous
formal processes which
are imposed on Schuberts
original. The
transformation of the
piano tones into a
multifaceted orchestra
full of resonance is only

was premiered at Milan's
Teatro alla Scala on 26
December 1833 and is
considered one of the
composer's most important
and innovative operas of
the 1830s. Although,
because of censorship
issues, particularly in
the south of Italy, it
was initially slow to
become popular, by the
late 1830s it had become
one of the composer's
most popular operas, both
in Italy and abroad, and
remained an essential
part of the composer's
oeuvre until at least the
end of the nineteenth
century. Remarkable for
its daring subject matter
(with an unconventional,
forceful heroine), it is
also renowned for its
challenging mixture of
the comic and the tragic,
something very unusual at
the time and clearly an
important influence on
Giuseppe Verdi's middle
period masterpieces. The
present reduction for
voice and piano derives
from the critical edition
of the score, recently
published in this
catalog: is based on
Donizetti's autograph
manuscript (housed in the
Ricordi Archives in
Milan), on the libretto
for the premiere, on
several printed editions
of voice and piano, and
on numerous additional
scores of the period. It
presents for the first
time all the numerous
additions that the
composer made to the
score over the course of
ten years: a fascinating
record of his changing
music dramatic attitudes
during this period. There
is also a synthetic
historical reconstruction
of the genesis of the
opera and of the
description of the
Sources as well as a
selection of most
interest to singers of
Critical Commentary
Notes.

Jahrhunderts verloren -
auch, aber nicht nur auf
der Suche nach
spannenden, vertonbaren
Texten.Bei William Carlos
Williams (1883-1963)
schliesslich, der trotz
seiner eminenten
Bedeutung gar nicht so
viel vertont wurde, hat
mein Suchradar
schliesslich
angeschlagen.Fernab der
protzerischen
Bildungsburgerei eines
T.S. Eliot, Lichtjahre
entfernt von der
gefahrlichen
Faschismus-Nahe eines
Ezra Pound, gehort WCW,
wie er gerne liebevoll
genannt wird, mit
Elizabeth Bishop und
Robert Lowell wohl zu den
Fixsternen der
amerikanischen Moderne.
Diese feine, reduzierte,
vermeintlich
unscheinbar-verspielte,
auf den zweiten Blick
aber so subversive und
messerscharf-bedeutungsre
iche Lyrik hat mich
seitdem vollends in ihren
Bann gezogen.Auf
Gedichten aus drei Banden
basierend, ,,Sour
Grapes(1921), ,,An Early
Martyr and Other Poems
(1935) und ,,The Wedge
(1944), habe ich
schliesslich einen sechs
Orchesterlieder
umfassenden Zyklus
komponiert. Mit diesem
wollte ich WCWs Gedichte
nicht etwa verdoppeln
oder nachzeichnen,
sondern ganz bewusst
meine personliche Sicht
auf diese fragilen
Meisterwerke werfen.
Dieses Auftragswerk der
Wiener Symphoniker und
des Wiener Konzerthauses
wurde vom fein
modellierten Klang und
Facettenreichtum dieses
wunderbaren Orchesters
inspiriert. Es ist meinen
Eltern gewidmet.
