The
piano-accompanied Lied is
undoubtedly the main
genre of Pauline
Viardot-Garcia's oeuvre.
With this volume, we
present settings of
German texts by such
poets as Ludwig Uhland,
Eduard Morike, Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe,
Heinrich Heine, Emanuel
Geibel, Ludwig Rellstab
and Richard Pohl. Except
for the Uhland settings,
these German Lieder were
written between 1862 and
1871 during Viardot's
Baden-Baden period, when
she shifted the focus of
her activities from
singing to composing and
teaching. Here she
worked, among other
things, on the poetry of
Eduard Morike, which she
called the greatest and
most genuine in all
German poetry after
Goethe.One of her first
published songs was the
setting of the Uhland
poem Des Knaben Berglied.
Accompanying herself on
the piano, she performed
it in 1838 on her first
concert tour of Germany.
A performance of the song
at the Leipzig Gewandhaus
prompted Robert Schumann
to remark: She showed
three talents here
[composition, singing and
piano playing], each of
which would grace its
artist. Through her
music, Viardot brings the
creatures in the poems to
life, tracing their
different characters and
inner states, thus giving
the texts a new level of
interpretation.

In
1918 a twelve-year phase
came to an end during
which Richard Strauss had
completely turned his
back on the composition
of lieder.Plausible
explanations for this
period of abstinence
range from StraussÂ’s
focus on stage works
during this time to the
fact that hiswife
Pauline, who had
previously constituted
the composer's
“ideal
performer†of his
lieder and frequently
been the source of
inspiration for these
compositions, had ended
her career as a singer.
After not having produced
any new lieder during
these twelve years,
Strauss was equally
consistent in the
resumption of lied
composition – at
least in the year 1918
that would prove to be
the most intensive
“lieder yearâ€
in his entire
compositional career with
the composition of opp.
66, 67, 68 and 69 (a
grand total of 29 lieder,
in addition to the
orchestration of six
piano lieder composed in
former years). The
current volume includes
the lieder dating from
1918 up to Strauss's
death in 1949 in their
original language and

songs, the composer
writes: The
contradictions in human
nature delighted him; he
loved the unevenness of
life and all its
manifestations. While
nineteenth Century
musical settings focused
almost exclusively on his
atmospheric and lyrical
poetry, it was not until
the twentieth Century
that adequate musical
expression could be found
for Heine's poetic
realism, unique in its
time. In this selection I
have attempted to
juxtapose the various
personae and forms used
by Heine so as to present
a picture of his
