Gustav Holst has earned a place among the most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.But before that great work, in his use of Englsh folksongs, Gnostic texts and these Vedic hymns, one can discern Holst's search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900's.Some see composition of the Vedic Hymns as a turning point in Holst's compositional life.The quality is not completely consistent, and Holst remained true to his Western musical inheritance for the most part in setting them, but as art songs they are deeply felt and moving to hear.The nine songs are scored for mezzo-Soprano or baritone Voice.The texts are taken from the Rigveda, one of the four sacred texts of Hinduism and the oldest religious text in the world.The first set of three comprises Ushas, Varuna and Maruts, or Dawn, Sky and Stormclouds respectively.The second includes Indra (God of Storm and Battle), Varuna II (the Waters) and Song of the Frogs.The third group moves into the human sphere with Vac (Speech), Creation and Faith. / Piano Et Voix

Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Amongst Rameau?s stage works which have come down to us in two main versions, such as ?Dardanus? (1739, 1744), ?Platée? (1745, 1749) and ?Zoroastre? (1749, 1756), none fell into oblivion for as long a period as ?Castor et Pollux?. After the work had been premiered in 1737, not until 1754 did Rameau decide to revise it. He asked his librettist ?Gentil-Bernard? to add an act to the tragedy and to give more weight to the brotherly friendship between Castor and Pollux. The main plot remains very similar to the one of 1737, aside from the fact that the sisters Télaïre and Phébé no longer are in love - the one with Castor the other with Pollux - but rather both with Castor which is the reason why Phébé is jealous of Télaïre. Already at the beginning of the first act Pollux relinquishes his love of Télaïre to the benefit of Castor. Castor, however, is killed by Linceus and finds himself in Hades. Pollux commits to saving his brother, sacrifices his immortality and declares his willingness to take Castor?s place in Hades so that his brother and Télaïre may be reunited. Jupiter, moved by this sacrifice, frees Pollux and bestows the couple immortality by giving them a place in the zodiac. Following the editorial principles of the ?Opera omnia Rameau? (and in contrast to the 1903 edition by August Chapuis issued within the old Rameau series), both versions of ?Castor et Pollux?, the version of 1737 (OOR IV.3) and the present version of 1754 (OOR IV.23), are published in two separate volumes in their entirety. Owing to the discovery of the original performance material, today preserved at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, the second version of 1754, which up until today was in the shadow of the 1737 version, can now be presented with its more tightly woven plot in all its vigor and dramatic momentum. Here, appearing for the first time, is the piano vocal score of Le Willis, Giacomo Puccini’s first stage work, whose full score remained unpublished until 2020, when it was issued by Casa Ricordi (NR 139546).The critical edition by Martin Deasy is based, as far as the first six Numbers are concerned, on the autograph score that Puccini reutilized for composing Le Villi. The autograph pages incorporating the final Number – pages that were later removed, in order to make space for the new material produced for Le Villi– are also proposed as the principal text.Pursuing an innovative philological approach, the editor has, furthermore, taken into due consideration the contemporaneous printed editions of the piano vocal score, on the assumption that they constitute the principal collateral sources, if one considers the particular genesis of this work. For it is certain that Puccini, upon entering the Sonzogno competition, submitted a score of Willis that lacked proper orchestration in a few pages and displayed, above all, incomplete vocal lines. However, he also provided a manuscript reduction for piano and vocal score (now lost, except for the final Number of Willis) that was undoubtedly more detailed, as far as the vocal lines were concerned. The editor proves that the vocal material produced for the first performance of Willis was not copied from the autograph score, but from the lost score reduction.
