Um
die Jahreswende 1872/73
machte sich Peter I.
Tschaikowsky an die
Komposition eines Zyklus
von '6 Romanzen' fur
Gesang und Klavier opus
16, startete dabei mit
dem einem Wiegenlied nach
einem Text aus den
'Modernen griechischen
Liedern' von Apollon
Nikolajewitsch Maikow.
Uber die Entstehung des
ouvres ist nichts
uberliefert; der
russische Musiker war
nach Moskau ubersiedelt,
unterrichtete am
Konservatorium, hatte
aber als Komponist noch
keinen durchschlagenden
Erfolg. Mit der Gattung
des Liedes beschaftigte
er sich Zeit seines
Lebens, wagte sich
bereits nach 1856, in
seiner Studienzeit, an
erste Lieder und Romanzen
und legte in seinem
Todesjahr 1893 einen
letzten Zyklus vor. Das
hier vorgelegte
'Wiegenlied' eroffnet den
fruhen Romanzen-Zyklus
opus 6. Tschaikowsky
widmete es Nadeshda
Nikolajewna
Rimskaja-Korsakowa, der
Frau des
Komponistenkollegen. Es
ist ein zugleich
schlichter wie
ausdrucksstarker Gesang
in balladenhaftem
Erzahlton.

Sakari
Ylivuori's introduction
illuminates the history
of the beloved songs: May
1, 1913 was cold and wet.
Jean Sibelius
(1865–1957) spent the
day at home at Ainola
composing two Christmas
songs: settings of poems
for children by Zachris
Topelius. The two songs
born on that chilly
spring day were Nu står
jul vid snöig port (Now
stands Yule at the snowy
gate) and Nu så kommer
julen (Now is Christmas
coming). He then put them
together with three
Christmas carols he had
earlier composed and gave
the set the imposing Opus
number 1. He had
previously considered
giving the distinction to
various other works, but
from 1915 onwards the
Five Christmas Songs had
the honour of heading his
catalogue.

It is a
great pleasure to
present, with
Thanatopsis, maestro
Kissin's opus 4, an
expressive setting of the
ground-breaking poem from
the quill of William
Cullen Bryant. Published
in in the form known
today in 1821, it is an
early example of American
romantic poetry of the
19th century. Bryant is
today reckoned among the
group of “Fireside
Poets†or
“Schoolroom
Poets,†names that
allude to the places
where their poems were
usually recited. His
poems – first and
foremost Thanatopsis
(“A Consideration
of Deathâ€) as his
most famous – are
rooted in the English
tradition, but at the
same time show Bryant's
openness to a genuine
American language and
lifeworld. Evgeny
Kissin's setting is a
large vocal scene
intensely informed by
recitative, which
congenially allows the
prevailing mood of the
text to resound. Our
edition additionally
includes German and
French translations of
the poem and an
informative afterword
about Bryant's life and
work and the genesis of
Thanatopsis.

Written in
1885, the eight songs
after texts by the now
little-known poet Hermann
von Gilm have a special
place in Richard Strauss'
corpus of Lieder. For the
first time, he composed
an entire set of songs on
texts by a single poet,
collecting them into one
opus that was also to
appear in print. Some of
the numbers in it, like
Zueignung, Die Nacht, and
Allerseelen, are among
the most popular Strauss
songs of all time, but
the entire cycle with its
well-planned structure is
also worthy of closer
examination and
performance. The aspiring
composer quite
consciously aligns
himself with the
tradition ranging from
Schubert to Wolf,
choosing the highly
Romantic subject of
unrequited love and
illuminating its most
diverse facets. The
primary source for the
Henle Urtext edition is
the first edition from
1887, which Strauss
furnished with a
dedication to the Royal
Bavarian chamber singer
Heinrich Vogl - a serious
invitation to today's
male singers not to leave
these wonderful Strauss
songs solely to female
singers!
