There
are only two sacred solo
songs in the extensive
oeuvre of the Oppenheim
composer Johanna Senfter.
Both songs, probably
composed in 1917, are
influenced by the
catastrophe of the First
World War. They are
hereby presented as the
first publication.

My
lecture of the
Winterreise does not
demand a new expressive
interpretation, but
instead systematically
exercises the freedom
which all interpreters
allow themselves
intuitively, such as:
instrumental dilation i.
e. acceleration of the
pace, transposition into
other keys and
elaboration of
characteristic color
timbres. In addition,
there are further ways of
reading; the music;
jumping around in the
text, repeating certain
lines, interrupting the
continuity, comparing
different expressions of
the same phrase ... All
these new possibilities
are subjected to my
compositional discipline
and form autonomous
formal processes which
are imposed on Schuberts
original. The
transformation of the
piano tones into a
multifaceted orchestra
full of resonance is only
one of many aspects.(Hans

Lutoslawski: Strawchain
& Other
Songs was
written in 1951 for
Polish Radio,
Strawchain &
OtherSongs
presents a series of
contrasting songs about
nature andpeople.
Strawchain itself is a set of
variations where the
Piano weaves around the
unchanging melody.
Lutoslawski's idiom is
carefully crafted with
short, memorable motifs
and imaginativeresponses
to the mixture of Polish
traditional poems and
contemporary writers.
Arranged and translated
into English by Marie
Pooler.

German.
In
Engelslicht und
Dornenschatten, the
author invites us to
listen to well-known
Christmas carols in a new
spirit, beyond all hoary
cliches. The Lieder fur
eine stille
Weihnachtszeit and
especially the different
instrumental
accompaniments grew out
of improvisation and the
desire to encourage the
formative creativity of
the musicians. The
arrangements correspond
to the recordings on the
eponymous CD known
through radio broadcasts.
I sought new approaches
to the carols. My fingers
played accompaniments as
if on their own, my voice
made repeats where there
were none, and did away
with some of the carols
original form. It was as
if something within me
was searching for a
counter-magic to thwart
the force of habit and
the automatism with which
Christmas carols are
often sung and heard.

Rembeck).

An instant
and overwhelming success
upon its first
performance in 1893,
Hänsel and Gretel has
captivated audiences of
all ages ever since.
Engelbert Humperdinck
combined the simplicity
of German folk tunes with
the sophistication of
Wagnerian technique in a
fairy-tale opera, based
on the story by the
Brothers Grimm. Richard
Strauss, who conducted
the premiere, proclaimed
it a masterpiece of the
highest quality.
Broadcast from Covent
Garden in 1923, it was
the first complete opera
ever aired on radio, and
eight years later it was
the first to be
transmitted live from the
Metropolitan Opera.
