Sibelius
made most of the
orchestral versions of
his songs for the soprano
Ida Ekman (1875-1942),
the incomparable Sibelius
singer the composer
called her in a
dedication written in a
score. Ida Ekman gave the
first performance of the
orchestral version of
Se'n har jag ej fragat
mera on March 30, 1914,
in Turku. Idas husband
Karl conducted the
orchestra of the Turku
Musical Society.Nearly
all of the orchestral
arrangements were made
years after the original
compositions for voice
and piano. Yet even
though the arrangements
were made in a very short
period of time, Sibelius
handled the combination
of solo voice and
orchestra in all songs
with equal mastery,
sometimes creating dark
and dramatic atmospheres
(in Pa verandan vid
havet), sometimes
radiant, colorful
impressions (in
Soluppgang), or
light-colored,
transparent textures (in
Varen flyktar hastigt),
and always basing his
ideas on the poetic idea
of the song while
discovering refined ways
of supporting it.In most
cases, Sibelius used a
comparatively small
orchestra: Varen flyktar
hastigt has only two
flute and four horns
added to the
strings.

Jahrhunderts verloren -
auch, aber nicht nur auf
der Suche nach
spannenden, vertonbaren
Texten.Bei William Carlos
Williams (1883-1963)
schliesslich, der trotz
seiner eminenten
Bedeutung gar nicht so
viel vertont wurde, hat
mein Suchradar
schliesslich
angeschlagen.Fernab der
protzerischen
Bildungsburgerei eines
T.S. Eliot, Lichtjahre
entfernt von der
gefahrlichen
Faschismus-Nahe eines
Ezra Pound, gehort WCW,
wie er gerne liebevoll
genannt wird, mit
Elizabeth Bishop und
Robert Lowell wohl zu den
Fixsternen der
amerikanischen Moderne.
Diese feine, reduzierte,
vermeintlich
unscheinbar-verspielte,
auf den zweiten Blick
aber so subversive und
messerscharf-bedeutungsre
iche Lyrik hat mich
seitdem vollends in ihren
Bann gezogen.Auf
Gedichten aus drei Banden
basierend, ,,Sour
Grapes(1921), ,,An Early
Martyr and Other Poems
(1935) und ,,The Wedge
(1944), habe ich
schliesslich einen sechs
Orchesterlieder
umfassenden Zyklus
komponiert. Mit diesem
wollte ich WCWs Gedichte
nicht etwa verdoppeln
oder nachzeichnen,
sondern ganz bewusst
meine personliche Sicht
auf diese fragilen
Meisterwerke werfen.
Dieses Auftragswerk der
Wiener Symphoniker und
des Wiener Konzerthauses
wurde vom fein
modellierten Klang und
Facettenreichtum dieses
wunderbaren Orchesters
inspiriert. Es ist meinen
Eltern gewidmet.
