Schumann s'intéressa relativement tardivement à la musique de chambre. En 1842 virent alors simultanément le jour six pièces de même importance, parmi lesquelles également son premier Trio avec piano, qu'il fit publier en 1850 seulement sous le titre Vier Phantasiestücke, lui attribuant le numéro d'opus 88. Entre-temps, il avait déjà composé le Trio en ré mineur op. 63 (1847) et celui en Fa majeur op. 80 (1847/1849). En 1851, alors qu'il vivait à Düsseldorf, il composa encore le Trio en sol mineur op. 110. Les quatre trios de Schumann figurent, avec les trios de Mendelssohn et de Brahms, parmi les oeuvres les plus importantes du genre au XIXe siècle.? / Trio Avec Piano

In addition to Bärenreiter's scholarly-critical editions of Brahms' trios, an arrangement of Brahms' String Sextet op. 18 for piano trio by his contemporary and friend Theodor Kirchner is now being published. Simrock, Brahms' publisher, issued it in 1883.
