Without doubt,
the most important
chamber music work by
Malats, and one of his
finest compositions, is
his Trio for Violin,
Cello and Piano in B Flat
Major. It was composed in
1898.
Malats
dedicated the Trio to one
of the greatest composers
of all time, Camille
Saint-Saëns, close
personal friend of both
Malats and Granados. An
unknown gem of the
chamber music repertoire,
this Modernist work is
superior in form,
technique and musical
content to similar work
by Granados, Breton,
Chapi and
others.
Malats
had considerable
knowledge and experience
with the trio form. In
1894 at the Sala erard in
Paris he performed four
trios by Beethoven,
Mendelssohn, Godard and
Saint-Saëns with C.
Flesch and Hasselmann.
Given his experiences
with chamber music it is
not surprising that
Malats exhibited such
confidence and security
in writing his Trio
maintaining perfect
balance and dialogue
between the three
instruments which he
achieved through
masterful control of the
formal structure. This
work has a rich harmonic
language and none of the
Nationalist qualities of
his previous pieces.
Instead, it reveals
Malats proximity to then
current European music
yet, at the same time,
exhibits his personal
style and musical
knowledge.

The Fantasy
Pieces op. 88 are
Schumann's first
contribution to the genre
of the piano trio and
date from his very
prolific “chamber
music year†1842.
However, Schumann needed
an unusually long time to
give the work its final
form: the Fantasy Pieces
were released only in the
autumn of 1850 after
several revisions. The
brevity and the modest
technical demands of the
four charming character
pieces make them an ideal
entry into the world of
Schumann's chamber music
also for non-professional
musicians. The Fantasy
Pieces, taken from the
volume Schumann •
Piano Trios HN 916, are
now available from Henle
for the first time also
as a practical single
edition.

Mendelssohn
is considered a
self-critical composer,
who repeatedly reworked a
number of his pieces
until he deemed them
worthy to be published.
The path to his first
Piano Trio was
particularly rocky: only
after several attempts
was he able to complete
it in the summer of 1839;
it appeared in 1840 after
further revisions. This
perfectionism paid off,
for Mendelssohn's D Minor
Trio was immediately
received with enthusiasm.
Robert Schumann wrote:
“It is the master
trio of the present day,
like those of Beethoven
in Bb and D and that of
Franz Schubert in Eb were
in their time; a very
beautiful composition
which after years will
still delight
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.â€
Which was to prove
true: even today, it
numbers among the most
popular works in the trio
repertoire in general.
The trio, taken from the
volume Mendelssohn
• Piano Trios HN
957, is now available
from Henle for the first
time also as a practical
single edition.
