Tangos,
like ragtimes and
waltzes, are an integral
part of Elena
Kats-Chernin's music,
always in a new and
varied form. In it, the
composer allusively
combines her present time
with the classical
tradition and high art
with light music. Slicked
Back Tango was originally
written in 1995 for piano
four hands, the present
version in 2002 for the
Australian Streeton Trio.
This tango harks back to
the time of silent
movies. I was thinking of
the 1920s and film star
Rudolph Valentino. The
title refers to his
hairstyle, says
Kats-Chernin.

Mendelssohn
is considered a
self-critical composer,
who repeatedly reworked a
number of his pieces
until he deemed them
worthy to be published.
The path to his first
Piano Trio was
particularly rocky: only
after several attempts
was he able to complete
it in the summer of 1839;
it appeared in 1840 after
further revisions. This
perfectionism paid off,
for Mendelssohn's D Minor
Trio was immediately
received with enthusiasm.
Robert Schumann wrote:
“It is the master
trio of the present day,
like those of Beethoven
in Bb and D and that of
Franz Schubert in Eb were
in their time; a very
beautiful composition
which after years will
still delight
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.â€
Which was to prove
true: even today, it
numbers among the most
popular works in the trio
repertoire in general.
The trio, taken from the
volume Mendelssohn
• Piano Trios HN
957, is now available
from Henle for the first
time also as a practical
single edition.

Without doubt,
the most important
chamber music work by
Malats, and one of his
finest compositions, is
his Trio for Violin,
Cello and Piano in B Flat
Major. It was composed in
1898.
Malats
dedicated the Trio to one
of the greatest composers
of all time, Camille
Saint-Saëns, close
personal friend of both
Malats and Granados. An
unknown gem of the
chamber music repertoire,
this Modernist work is
superior in form,
technique and musical
content to similar work
by Granados, Breton,
Chapi and
others.
Malats
had considerable
knowledge and experience
with the trio form. In
1894 at the Sala erard in
Paris he performed four
trios by Beethoven,
Mendelssohn, Godard and
Saint-Saëns with C.
Flesch and Hasselmann.
Given his experiences
with chamber music it is
not surprising that
Malats exhibited such
confidence and security
in writing his Trio
maintaining perfect
balance and dialogue
between the three
instruments which he
achieved through
masterful control of the
formal structure. This
work has a rich harmonic
language and none of the
Nationalist qualities of
his previous pieces.
Instead, it reveals
Malats proximity to then
current European music
yet, at the same time,
exhibits his personal
style and musical
knowledge.

Russian Rag
is one of Elena
Kats-Chernins most famous
pieces. It was arranged
by her for various
instrumentations and was
used, among other things,
as film music in the clay
animation film Mary &
Max. The composer herself
says: Ragtimes are such
fun to write and they
have a somewhat dark
melancholy. Russian music
often has a melancholic
quality, and I was
brought up on Rachmaninov
and Tchaikovsky,
Prokofiev and
Shostakovich. I rarely
write in major keys it
seems and Russian Rag is
no exception, however it
concludesoptimistically
on a major chord..

The piano
trio version of LA MUSE
ET LE POÈTE, Op. 132 was
written by Camille
Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)
in 1910 during a vacation
to North Africa, and that
version premiered at
Queen's Hall on June 7,
1910, with Eugene Ysaÿe
on violin, Jospeh
Hollmann on cello, and
the composer at the
piano. Saint-Saëns
transcribed the version
for violin, cello and
orchestra that same year,
and the same two string
players premiered that
version on October 20 at
the Sarah Bernhardt
Theater in Paris under
Fernand Le Borne. Despite
the title (which was
later added by the
publisher to make it more
marketable), no program
is intended for the work
and neither instrument
represents either the
muse or the poet.
Saint-Saëns himself
referred to the piece as
a conversation between
the two instruments
instead of a debate
between two
virtuosos.
