Schumann s'intéressa relativement tardivement à la musique de chambre. En 1842 virent alors simultanément le jour six pièces de même importance, parmi lesquelles également son premier Trio avec piano, qu'il fit publier en 1850 seulement sous le titre Vier Phantasiestücke, lui attribuant le numéro d'opus 88. Entre-temps, il avait déjà composé le Trio en ré mineur op. 63 (1847) et celui en Fa majeur op. 80 (1847/1849). En 1851, alors qu'il vivait à Düsseldorf, il composa encore le Trio en sol mineur op. 110. After an early work and a discontinued attempt in 1831/32 Mendelssohn made his breakthrough in this important chamber music genre in the summer of 1839 with the Piano Trio in d minor op. 49, which was to be followed six years later by the Trio in c minor op. 66. On publication of the first trio, Schumann took the opportunity to describe the composer as the 'Mozart of the 19th century”, whereby he was obviously alluding to the mixture of Classical and Romantic stylistic elements.The musical text of these two famous Trios has been thoroughly revised to reflect the latest scholarly findings. The autograph of a composition always makes fascinating reading - and this is particularly true of Schubert's Trio in Eb major op. 100, as it underwent many changes during its composition. The manuscript, parts of which were greatly revised, bears eloquent witness to this and offers an opportunity to trace the intricacies of Schubert's phrasing and articulation.
