24 Pieces For Piano. Par WOLF PETER E.. Péter Wolf (a doctoral graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest) has composed a number of large-scale compositions in recent years which have had success at the hands of distinguished performers: these include two piano concertos as well as concertos for oboe, clarinet, and violin. By entitling his newest set of pieces for piano Wolf-temperiertes Klavier, the composer was able to simultaneously indulge in wordplay based upon his surname and give a tip of the hat to German baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach. The work's likeness to Bach is not limited to its title - the manner in which a piece has been written in both major and minor keys for each tone of the chromatic scale is blatantly inspired by Bach. In the preface to this publication, Wolf offers the following insights: ''I think I managed to find expressive titles. The first piece, Epiclesis (a prayer for inspiration, patience, and support), was heard from above: I was able to work continuously and without inhibitions. The works could be born in every key, until the last one, the Epilogue, was completed. When I finally finished inscribing the pitches of Bach's name, I admit, a little shiver went through me.'' Of the character pieces, all were completely new with the exceptions of one being previously written and another whose theme Wolf borrowed from one of his own stage works. In 1790, during the lifetime of Mozart and Haydn, Ernst Ludwig Gerber wrote of Ko?eluch in his famous handbook for musicians, 'without opposition, by young and old, (?) generally the best-loved composer alive today?. His works display 'liveliness and grace, the noblest of melodies with the purest of harmonies, and a pleasing organisation of rhythm and modulation.? Until now, pianists have had little chance to acquaint themselves with the complete range of Ko?eluch's sonatas since very few modern editions were available. For the first time, this new complete edition by Christopher Hogwood presents all of Ko?eluch's sonatas for keyboard solo. In the summer of 1913 Satie once more poked fun at himself and the world of music with a set of parodic piano pieces on various marine animals, giving it the grotesque title 'Embryons desséchés? (Dessicated Embryos)(BA 10811). The atmospheric cycle 'Avant-dernières Pensées? (Next-to-last Thoughts) (BA 10849) of 1915, with its underlaid words, likewise belongs to Satie's 'story pieces'. The notation without barlines, the 'stories' beneath the music and the spoofsof well-known pieces of music, most strikingly the Funeral March from Chopin's Piano Sonata in B minor, make the work a barrel of musical fun. The curious performance instructions in these three miniatures, all based on ostinato figures, amusingly lampoon the ideal of Romantic expressiveness. These two Urtext editions faithfully adhere to the sources and reflect the latest findings of Satie scholarship. They contain translations of all of Satie's French texts, practical page-turns, notes on performance practice by Satie specialist Steffen Schleiermacher and informative Forewords. The pieces range from an easy to moderate level of difficulty and provide an ideal additional varied repertoire for teaching purposes. / Piano
