Loui
s Anthony deLise is an
American composer,
pianist, and
percussionist. The
compositions in A Gift of
Moments are typical of
deLise’s composing
style that often features
the juxtaposition of
disparate musical
elements like serial
technique, frequently
changing meters, the
urgency and drive of rock
and roll, and the lush
harmonies of
1960’s West Coast
Jazz. Dr. deLise was
Adjunct Lecturer of
Theory and Composition at
the Boyer College of
Music and Dance (in
Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania). He is the
author of The
Professional Songwriter,
a textbook on
songwriting. The title, A
Gift of Moments, comes
from something a friend
wrote about her deceased
husband. She described
their too-short time
together as, a gift of
moments. (Time with
someone you love is
always too short,
isn’t it?) Since
February 2020, (since
I’ve been locked
down at home with my
patient and loving wife,
Theresa), like the rest
of us, I’ve been
reminded each day of just
how delicate life is. My
friend’s comment
about her lost love has
gradually revealed itself
as a worthy title for the
collection of music I was
creating during this time
of lockdown. All of the
pieces in this collection
are in some way about
love: of a mate, of
family, our way of life,
and those beliefs we
consider particular to
us. The compositions are
varied in style as they
encompass musical
gestures reflective of
the many disparate
musical traditions alive
in my soul. With this
unapologetically
sensitive, perhaps even
nostalgic, music of mine
I intend to blur the
arbitrary boundaries of
genre classification,
like classical or pop;
ambient or orchestral.
Special thanks to Vivian
Barton Dozor, a
wonderfully talented
cellist who provided
insight into bowing and
phrasing for the cello
parts.

In 1725,
J.S. Bach gave his second
wife, Anna Magdalena, a
Notenbüchlein - a
collection of solo
keyboard pieces and
arias. Most of the
keyboard pieces were
composed by friends,
colleagues, and his son,
Carl Philipp Emanuel
Bach. The easier keyboard
works were probably used
to instruct their
children, while the arias
would have been performed
by Anna Magdalena, who
was a singer. For this
edition, Edwin McLean has
chosen and expertly
edited the most popular
and easier keyboard
pieces. Originally, the
pieces contained no
dynamics and virtually no
phrasing, which is
typical of baroque
harpsichord music and
even early 18th-century
fortepiano music.
Sectional dynamics have
been added editorially
and may be changed at the
discretion of the
performer. A minimal
amount of phrasing and
articulation has also
been added for clarity.
This edition preserves
the original notation for
appoggiaturas, where
small eighth or quarter
notes resolve to the
principal note. Ossias
have been included to
show how to play them;
ossias also appear when
needed for ornaments such
as trills and
mordents.

Les
accords de septieme
regrettent!!! was the
first of the birthday
gift Debussy wrote for
his second wife-to-be
Emma Barda on 4 June
1905. It consists of only
nine bards, inscribed as
follows: 'But see how
successfully the chords
of the 9th, equipped with
all their harmonies, send
the regrettable 7th [in
bars 1-4] about their
business and borrow from
the colour of the sky
some godlike gleams in
order to celebrate your
birthday, dear petite
mienne' ['Mais voici
qu'heureusement des
accords de 9me armes de
tous leurs harmoniques te
nous envole promener les
regrettable 7emes et
emprunte a la couleur de
ciel des lueurs
d'apotheose pour celebrer
ta chere fete de chere
petite mienne'] Which
shous how much their
initially idyllic
relationship was founded
on Emma's sympathetic
understanding of
Debussy's musical
language, something that
had proved impossible for
his first wife Lilly.

P
iano Sonata No.1 was
composed in the early
1960â??s. My teacher,
Tibor Serly, with whom I
studeid for eight years,
one day suggested it was
time for me to write a
sonata. The suggestion
was a little intimidating
at the time, but somehow
I forged ahead until
finally it was completed.
Fortunately, Tibor's
wife, first class pianist
Miriam Molin, recorded
the piece and can be
found at the Naxos Music
Library. -Edward Thomas

For
Teresa was
commissioned by Tim Suter
for his wife, Helen, as
part of William
Howard’s Love Songs
Project and was first
performed privately by
William Howard for her
60th birthday in February
2017. He gave the public
premiere at Hoxton Hall,
London on 26th April
2017. The music is based
on the notes T E S (E
flat) A of the Christian
name of the
composer’s wife,
Teresa Cahill. The
music works towards a
quotation of the opening
of Beethoven’s
Bagatelle No. 25 in A
minor, Für
Elise (which also
uses letters from the
name Therese, H being B
natural in German
nomenclature), a piece
which, it is now thought,
was
originallytitled
Für Therese
and possibly
composed for Theresa
Malfatti, to whom
Beethoven unsuccessfully
proposed marriage in
1810, but recent
musicology has suggested
other possible
dedicatees.
