| Two Nocturnes (DOBRZYNSKI
IGNACY FELIKS) Piano seul [Partition] PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)
Par DOBRZYNSKI IGNACY FELIKS. Ignacy Feliks Dobrzynski wrote eight nocturnes for...(+)
Par DOBRZYNSKI IGNACY FELIKS. Ignacy Feliks Dobrzynski wrote eight nocturnes for piano. Five of them were published in 1833–1834 in two books as Opp. 21 and 24, while the remainder appeared in various occasional collections issued much later.
The Nocturne in A major was written in 1846 and belongs to the group of works composed by Dobrzynski during his tour of German cities. That tour was designed to increase the composer’s popularity and boost his finances. Besides concerts and meetings promoting Dobrzynski’s music, the ‘marketing campaign’ also included the publication of his new salon miniatures in particular cities. This Nocturne appeared in print in Berlin as Op. 52, together with a short mazurka constituting a transcription of the earlier song ‘Gdzie lubi’ (‘A fickle maid’). The form of this piece is based on an A-B-A1 scheme typical of the genre, with a quite elaborate epilogue. In section A, the composer based the melody on a one-bar motif in mazurka rhythm, which he combined with a bass led in widely spread chords, often used in nocturnes. He thus obtained a specifically idyllic mood. The sonorities, the type of melody and texture and, above all, the ornaments that appear as the work progresses bring to mind the early work of Fryderyk Chopin. The chordal section B, of lively expression, in the key of F sharp minor and a uniform triple rhythm, triggers associations with the middle section of Chopin’s Nocturne in A flat major, Op. 32 No. 2. After a short bridge, the reprise comprises a reiteration of the opening part of section A, which then passes into the epilogue, in which the composer splices motifs from both contrasting sections.
It is difficult to date the second Nocturne published here and to establish the circumstances surrounding its composition. It was published posthumously (in 1868, in Warsaw), in the Album Pamiatkowe IG.F. Dobrzynskiego (‘Souvenir album of I. F. Dobrzynski’), which also contained two mazurkas, two songs and an excerpt from his incidental music for the play Konrad Wallenrod arranged for four hands. These compositions were not previously published and probably come from private collections. The Nocturne carries a dedication to Miss Wanda Miecznikowska. Determining the principal key of this work is rather problematic, since it falls into two tonally and expressively contrasting sections, divided by a lengthy caesura. An agitated, emotional episode in F minor (in A-B-A1 form, section B in A flat major), ending with a distinct conclusion, is followed, rather unexpectedly, by completely new material in the key of F major; adhering to a slower tempo and of very restrained expression, it serves as a sort of post scriptum, a lengthy and calming musical commentary to the foregoing segment. One may even gain the impression that this Nocturne is essentially a diptych consisting of two separate ‘songs without words’. Judging by its style, which is close to the lyric writing of Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy or John Field, with elements of the style brillant, this work could have been written earlier than the Nocturne in A major. One may also discern here a certain melodic-rhythmic similarity to the above-mentioned Nocturne in A flat major by Chopin.
Both these Dobrzynski mazurkas could make interesting additions to the repertoire of both professional pianists and more advanced amateurs interested in nineteenth-century salon music. They may also enrich the programmes of concerts and broadcasts, particularly those devoted to Polish music, and also be included on the curricula of secondary schools of music.
The present edition was based on the first editions. The proposed fingering in both works and the pedalling in the Nocturne in A major are entirely the work of the editors; other editorial performance markings are given in brackets. / Répertoire / Piano

| Six Character Pieces Op.
17 Book 2 (ZELENSKI
WLADYSLAW) Piano seul [Partition] PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)
Par ZELENSKI WLADYSLAW. Wladyslaw Zelenski had the Six Character Pieces for pian...(+)
Par ZELENSKI WLADYSLAW. Wladyslaw Zelenski had the Six Character Pieces for piano, op. 17 ready around 1871, although it is quite possible that he composed them earlier, even in 1864. Such is indicated by the opus number. At that time he was giving opus numbers to works in chronological order of composition. This set is dedicated to Auguste Auspitz-Kolár, a pianist whom Zelenski could have met on one of his trips to Vienna. The composer published these works in 1872, with Gotthard of Vienna, in two books under the common title Sechs Charakterstücke. The present edition is based on Ludwig Doblinger?s Viennese edition (cat. no. 1221 comprises the Praeludium, Promenade and Tanz, cat. no. 1222 the Canon, Scherzo and Abschied).
The compositions collected in Zelenski?s opus 17 have been unjustly forgotten. Their undeniable qualities include advanced harmonies and expressive melodic writing, as well as a wide range of textural means and composition techniques. Quite ?densely? written, these miniatures may prove challenging, but the right fingering eliminates many difficulties of performance.
The second book of Wladyslaw Zelenski?s Six Character Pieces contains three miniatures: Canon, Scherzo and Farewell. They manifest characteristic features of the composer?s style, such as the use of counterpoint and a rich, organ-like texture.
The Canon, with its emotional charge and build-up of tension, brings to mind miniatures from the brilliant piano cycles of Robert Schumann. A very simple phrase is imitated canonically between the top voice and the two bottom voices, passing through different keys. A touch of finesse is added by the triplet figuration in the middle plan.
The next miniature is a classic Scherzo in ABA form. The outer sections, with an imitated theme, are in G minor. With its rather ominous, perhaps somewhat tragic, character, it contrasts with the middle section, Un poco più tranquillo, in the parallel key of G major, which clearly represents a more luminous, dance-like episode in this set of works.
The title Farewell given to the last piece in opus 17 may stir associations with Ludwig van Beethoven?s only programme sonata, Les Adieux. This miniature is far more expansive and texturally richer than the other works in this set. The virtuosic elements are of the highest order, not overwhelming the composition, but emphasising its powerful emotional charge.
Each of these miniatures can function as a separate work, but when played as two three-part cycles they fall into logical wholes, in which the climax is reached in the last, most elaborate piece. Yet a performance of all six works from both books, so the whole of Zelenski?s opus 17, allows us to discern an even larger cyclical form, developed in an equally deliberate way. - Anna Miernik/ Répertoire / Piano

s 'Romanian Christmas Songs' are based on folk melodies that originated in a pagan celebration of the winter solstice, and which he felt gave '
the impression of a fiery, war-like type of song, rather than a pious and religious one”. Nevertheless, he chose 20 melodies from this collection of '
colinde” and published them under the title of '
Christmas Songs”. In the first edition of 1918 they were conceived for children'
s hands and so were published '
without octaves”- but in his revised edition of 1936, which we present here, Bartók added an appendix featuring alternative '
concert versions”, confirming that these miniatures are also perfectly suited for public performance. Our Urtext edition is based on that of the Bartók Complete Edition, and for the first time integrates these concert variants directly into the musical text. We also offer the original melodies and translations of the texts of these colinde to provide an insight into the origins of this rather different kind of Christmas music./ Répertoire / Piano

Nevertheless, a good 20 years elapsed before that second concerto finally took form, and only in 1881 was he able to announce: 'I wanted to tell you that I have written a very small Piano concerto with a tiny little delicate Scherzo?.This Piano reduction of this anything-but-little symphonic concerto presents the solo part as it appears in the respective, recently published volume of the Brahms Complete Edition (HN 6020). Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. The European Hymn is the hymn not only of the European Union but of Europe in a broader sense. The melody has been taken from the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1823.
In the last movement of this symphony Beethoven set music to the 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich von Schiller from 1785. This poem sprang from Schiller's idealistic vision of men who become brothers – a vision Beethoven shared with him.
In 1972 the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' as its anthem. The well-known conductor Herbert von Karajan was commissioned to arrange three instrumental versions – for solo piano, wind orchestra and symphony orchestra. Without words, in the universal language of music, the anthem is an expression of the idealistic values of freedom, peace and solidarity which Europe stands for.
In 1985 the heads of state and government adopted the hymn as the EU's official anthem. It does not replace the national anthems of the member states, but rather celebrates common values as well as unity in diversity.
The score of this offical anthem is exclusively available from the Schott publishing house./ Répertoire / Piano

Aulos to a certain degree continues Orbán's easy piano pieces for children, which he composed for Ágnes Lakos's piano tutor and which Editio Musica Budapest published in a separate volume entitled Enchanted Forest in 2011 (Z. 14742). Yet on this occasion the composer took on something which was both significantly different and more than his earlier pieces for children. On the one hand, he did not compose for beginners but for more advanced students who have studied piano for at least three years. On the other, he did not set developing the technique of piano playing as an aim, rather a systematic presentation of different polyphonic genres and compositional procedures (imitation, fugue, stretto, inversion, augmentation and diminution, double counterpoint, latent polyphony, double and triple fugue, cantus firmus technique, etc.). Orbán introduces his students to the mysteries of polyphony in a direct and practical manner, and thus actually makes them familiar with the art of composition. The educational use of the series is significantly increased by the fact that before each piece the composer presents and clarifies with demonstrative illustrations the polyphonic procedure he introduces. Orbán's explanations are not text-book-like at all, but are deliberately personal and subjective, full of lessons and individual associations taken from his practice as a composer. They were written in the same spirit as the works themselves - while they perfectly fulfil their educational purpose they are equally individual, witty and inspired pieces of music that are a joy to play. / Piano

Par CHOSTAKOVITCH DIMITRI. Just back from a trip to Leipzig in the early autumn of 1950 where he heard Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier at the Bicentennial Bach Competition played by the Russian pianist Tatiana Nikolaeva, Shostakovich began his own series of 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, based on Bach's model. He composed them quickly, starting on October 10, 1950, and finishing on February 23, 1951. While his work would pay homage to Bach, Shostakovich's work would have several fundamental differences. First, the order of the individual pieces would be organized around the circle of fifths with a prelude and fugue in the relative minor following each major key piece rather than in ascending semi-tonalorder of Bach's work. Second, Shostakovich's pieces would be composed in order — that is, C major - A minor followed by G major - E minor followed by D major - B minor — and, more significantly, this order would have a sort of subliminal narrative sub-text, taking the music from the 'innocent' tonal world of the C major Prelude and Fugue to the profound and sublime severity of the concluding D minor Prelude and Fugue. Finally, Shostakovich's work, although conservative in its counterpoint and harmony — that is, there are no examples of invertible or reversible themes or counterpoint and the pieces are for the most part recognizably tonal in language — is still clearly the work of a modernist composer; his counterpoint and harmony may be conservative but the emotional and spiritual worlds of the preludes and fugues is at once sincere and ironic. The result is a work which can not only stand comparison with Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier, it is both Shostakovich's masterpiece for the piano and one of the contrapuntal masterpieces of the twentieth century./ Répertoire / Piano

This short piece (which also exists in versions for violin or bassoon and piano) was created for the 'Blues' project of the Dutch pianist Marcel Worms. The title maybe alludes to the fact that such a busy artist has to spend a lot of time on the road between performances. However, the composition is, by no means, melancholy. It rather is a lively piece playing with thirds mainly in a high register. Bitonality and jazz harmony contradict the musical-box-like character in a fascinating way. Marcel Worms recorded Economy Class Blues on his CD 'A Can of Blues' which has been released by the label Vermes Records. / Piano

If the nickname 'Appassionata? was appropriate for one of Beethoven's Sonatas, it would be for his E-flat major Sonata op. 7 rather than his famous work in F minor op. 57. This was Carl Czerny's opinion who felt that op. 7 was written in a rather passionate state of mind. It was not only Beethoven's first 'Grande Sonate? but also his first work of this genre which he had published individually. The earliest sketches for Beethoven's Grande Sonate op. 7 date from 1796 and the first edition was issued in October 1797. This work is one of the longest and most demanding of Beethoven's piano sonatas. Its four movements cover a wide range of emotions - a challenge that may well have overtaxed the dedicatee, Beethoven's then 16 year old pupil Anna Luise Barbara (Babette) Countess Keglevicz. The worldwide renowned Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar draws on all available sources for his scholarly-critical Urtext edition. (Homage to Haydn). Par GOEHR ALEXANDER. My piece is subtitled ‘Homage to Haydn’. Why? Because it is modelled on Haydn’s Variations in F minor/major. But modelled does not imply pastiche or imitation. From Brahms onwards (if not before) there are countless examples of pieces modelled on others in a variety of ways. To do this does not imply a closeness to the original, rather inevitably a distance from it. I don’t know whether a listener would be the wiser for knowing the original. In any case a composition must stand on its own feet. Alexander Goehr / Date parution : 2016-11-20/ Répertoire / Piano

The easy-to-read engravings and careful editing also make this edition a winner! / Date parution : 2022-02-10/ Recueil / Piano
