burgerliche Denken ist
gekennzeichnet durch ein
hochentwickeltes System
von
Verdrangungsmechanismen,
welche die Isolation,
Entfremdung, Angst und
Sprachlosigkeit des
Individuums uberspielen
sollen. Unser
Kulturbetrieb ist ein
wesentlicher Teil dieses
Verdrangungssystems. In
diesem Sinn hat er die
Tradition in Beschlag
genommen: die Illusion
einer in Wirklichkeit
langst verlorenen
gemeinsamen
Verstandigungsbasis
bewahrt er durch die
Konservierung und
Fetischisierung
historischer asthetischer
Kategorien und daran
gebundener
Wertvorstellungen; als
Synonym fur tabuisierte
Konvention bildet
Tradition heute einen
verraterischen Teil
dieser unserer
Wirklichkeit. Die Funf
Variationen uber ein
Thema von Franz Schubert
sind 1956, also noch vor
meinem Studium bei Nono,
entstanden. In ihnen ist
jener oben ausgefuhrte
gesellschafts- und
kulturbetriebskritische
Ansatz noch kaum
erkennbar, eher keimhaft
verborgen. Ich mag das
Stuck so, wie einer
vielleicht Souvenirs aus
seiner Jugend mag. Es ist
vorwiegend von rationalen
Prinzipien in Anlehnung
an Motivtechniken
Schonbergs und des spaten
Strawinsky gepragt, und
doch ist das
musikantische Element und
der tanzerische
Charakter, wenn auch
immer anders gebrochen,
erhalten geblieben. Noch
nicht ausgepragt ist
hierin der Widerstand
gegen Tradition, insofern
deren Kategorien als
herrschende Konventionen
jenen zuvor erwahnten
burgerlichen
Verdrangungsmechanismen

..., wenn man es nicht in
einem ganz guten Raum
hort, mit einer Akustik,
in der man wirklich diese
Nachhallsachen alle hort,
dann kann man ganz
schnell sagen, dass ist
so traditionelle Wiener
Schule-Musik ... Und wenn
man dahinter hort, dann
hort man eben schon, dass
all diese traditionellen
Klavier-Figurationen, die
so an der Oberflache da
sind, standig diese
Nachhall-Welt auslosen.
Und die ist dann eben
doch eine andere, die
dahinter ist. Aber es ist
eben beides und es halt
sich ... in Schach
irgendwie. Zumindest am
Anfang hort man ganz
aufmerksam zu ... sonst
hort man nur die virtuose
Oberflache. ... Ich
wollte nur auf den Tasten
spielen: Also ganz
normales, konventionelles
Klavierspiel, das ist das
eine. Und dann, was das
auslost bzw. wo das
aufgefangen wird ..., da
fangt die Klangspielerei
an, die vom
traditionellen
Klavierspiel wegfuhrt.
Bezug zur Tradition ist
riskant. Aber das macht
ja auch nichts. Mir wurde
es naturlich etwas
ausmachen, wenn das
umkippt zur falschen
Seite, wenn es doch eben
nicht die Ohren auf eine
neue Art von Wahrnehmung
richtet, was ich schon
mochte. Ich will nur
nicht die neue
Wahrnehmung in irgend
einer Wuste suchen, die
es, glaube ich, auch gar
nicht mehr gibt ... Ich
glaube nicht, dass das
ein vermittelnder Ansatz
ist: Es geht von
bestimmten Dingen aus und
versucht dann, woanders
hin zu kommen. Was soll
ich vermitteln: Tradition
und Avantgarde? Es ist
eine ganz komische Sache:
Ich habe Lust, ganz
abseits von diesen Sachen
etwas auszuprobieren,
Sachen zu machen, die ich
noch gar nicht gemacht
habe, dass diese Sachen
bis zu einem gewissen
Grad ausgereizt sind. Das
ist jetzt alles
Spekulation: Da muss ich
selbst abwarten, was mit

This work,
composed in 1971, was
intended for professional
performers. It was
written with post-Webern,
free twelve-tone
technique its sound is
characterized by frequent
use of all twelve notes
in the construction of
the harmony, and by wide
spacing of dissonant
intervals or the crowding
of them into dense
blocks. These short
character pieces contain
a great variety of
gestures and emotions,
ranging from witty
playfulness through
violent Sturm und Drang
behaviour that shatters
every framework, to
mournful lamentation and
hope of hymnic
redemption.
Das
1971 komponierte Werk
entstand für
professionelle
Interpreten. Bei seiner
Komposition wurde die
post-Webernsche, freie
Zwölftontechnik
angewandt. Seine
Klangwelt wird durch den
Zusammenbau aller
zwölf Töne zu einer
Harmonie, durch die
Positionierung der
dissonanten Tonintervalle
in weiten Lagen oder
deren Komprimierung in
große Blocks
charakterisiert. Die
kurzen Charakterstücke
beinhalten viele Gesten
und Emotionen, die von
der witzigen
Verspieltheit über das
aggressive, jegliche
Rahmen zersprengendes
Sturm und
Drang-Verhalten, bis hin
zum Trauerlied und der
hymnischen
Erlösungshoffnung

ury. Wahrend dieser Tage
schlug er manchmal mit
der Faust schwere,
massige Rhythmen
elementarster Proportion
auf den Tisch. Vierfaches
Forte. Diese
Befreiungsschlage
hafteten die ganze Zeit
wahrend der Arbeit an
Statement in meinem
Gedachtnis. Sie waren
ganz aus dem Nahbereich
des Machens und
Wahrnehmens geboren.
Solcher Nahbereich
menschlicher Sinnenwelt
ist auch musikalisches
Ausfuhrungs- und
Hormodell des ubrigen
Stuckes. Die jeweiligen
Tone werden aus der
88-tastigen Klaviatur
aufgrund von
Bewegungsentwurfen
abgerufen, deren
Streckenmasse und
Geschwindigkeiten,
multipliziert mit den
jeweils zu bewegenden
Organ(gewicht)en, Ton und
Harmonik
charakterisieren. Der
horizontale, zeitliche
Verlauf des Stuckes
verwirrt zeitweise die
Nahbereichswahrnehmung
durch Wiederholung. In
der Partitur zeigen
numerierte Klammern das
jeweilige
Notentextfragment an, das
an einer anderen Stelle
in den musikalischen
Verlauf eingeschoben
werden soll, und zwar so,
als wurde es zum ersten
Mal erklingen. Es geht
also nicht um
psychisch-dynamische
Weiterspinnung, sondern
um eine live simulierte
Wiederholung von
Vergangenem, als ware es
gar nicht vergangen.
Derartige horizontale
Bewegungsentwurfe betonen
an Wiederholung eher das
Fremde, Sprengende, nicht
das
Zusammenhangschaffende.
Gegen Ende argumentiert
der korperliche
Nahbereich, schlagt um in
,,Umgebung: Lauft da
nicht ein Radio, ein
Fernseher, ein
Kuhlschrank? Geht da
nicht ein Wind draussen?
Fahrt nicht ein Auto?
Spielen da nicht Kinder?
Tonbander sind nur eine
schwache Simulation! Im
Optimalfall sollen
Fenster und Turen des
Konzertsaales geoffnet
und wieder geschlossen

After touring Europe from
Lisbon to St. Petersburg
in the 1840s, Ferenc
Liszt settled in Weimar.
He abandoned his position
as a celebrated virtuoso
and took up the post of
court Kapellmeister
there. Ballade No. 2 is
also from the output of
this period. Composed
together with the Sonata
in B Minor and in the
same key, to the
discerning listener this
work reveals the
influence of Schubert and
Chopin. Intriguingly, the
work seems to have
progressed along the same
path as the composer
himself: initially, it
concluded with a
sensational and
thunderous finale, while
the definitive version
ends with quiet lyricism.
This duality can easily
be studied in this
edition, which includes
bothversions. This
revised (2018) edition is
raised to the level of
academic thoroughness by
a new editor s preface, a
facsimile, and full

rag, The Entertainer
reached high acclaim in

resurgence of ragtime in
general, but more
specifically brought
renewed interest in the
works of Scott Joplin.
Solace was frequently
heard in the background
of many scenes in which
the character was deep in
thought. Subtitled, A
Mexican Serenade, Solace
has a serene Latin feel,
unlike no other samba
written and is the
favorite of many Joplin
enthusiasts. While the
Maple Leaf Rag, actually
became quite popular
during Joplin's lifetime,
so much so that it was
the first printed sheet
of music to sell over one
million copies. We are

Marche
fatale is an incautiously
daring escapade that may
annoy the fans of my
compositions more than my
earlier works, many of
which have prevailed only
after scandals at their
world premieres. My
Marche fatale has,
though, little
stylistically to do with
my previous compositional
path; it presents itself
without restraint, if not
as a regression, then
still as a recourse to
those empty phrases to
which modern civilization
still clings in its daily
utility music, whereas
music in the 20th and
21st centuries has long
since advanced to new,
unfamiliar soundscapes
and expressive
possibilities. The key
term is banality. As
creators we despise it,
we try to avoid it -
though we are not safe
from the cheap banal even
within new aesthetic
achievements.Many
composers have
incidentally accepted the
banal. Mozart wrote Ein
musikalischer Spass [A
Musical Jape], a
deliberately amateurishly
miscarried sextet.
Beethoven's Bagatellen
op. 119 were rejected by
the publisher on the
grounds that few will
believe that this minor
work is by the famous
Beethoven. Mauricio Kagel
wrote, tongue in cheek,
so to speak, Marsche, um
den Sieg zu verfehlen
[Marches for being
Unvictorious], Ligeti
wrote Hungarian Rock; in
his Circus Polka
Stravinsky quoted and
distorted the famous, all
too popular Schubert
military march, composed
at the time for piano
duet. I myself do not
know, though, whether I
ought to rank my Marche
fatale alongside these
examples: I accept the
humor in daily life, the
more so as this daily
life for some of us is
not otherwise to be
borne. In music, I
mistrust it, considering
myself all the closer to
the profounder idea of
cheerfulness having
little to do with humor.
However: Isn't a march
with its compelling claim
to a collectively martial
or festive mood absurd, a
priori? Is it even music
at all? Can one march and
at the same time listen?
Eventually, I resolved to
take the absurd seriously
- perhaps bitterly
seriously - as a
debunking emblem of our
civilization that is
standing on the brink.
The way - seemingly
unstoppable - into the
black hole of all
debilitating demons: that
can become serene. My old
request of myself and my
music-creating
surroundings is to write
a non-music, whence the
familiar concept of music
is repeatedly re-defined
anew and differently, so
that derailed here -
perhaps? - in a
treacherous way, the
concert hall becomes the
place of mind-opening
adventures instead of a
refuge in illusory
security. How could that
happen? The rest is -

in Gaussin, a pupil of
Olivier Messiaen at the
CNSM in Paris, and a
veritable alchemist of
sound, created a sensual
and sparkling work that
aims to induce in
listeners the sort of
'internal awakening' that
the Japanese refer to as
Satori ' the title given
to a piece for solo
clarinet he wrote in
1998. Composed a decade
later, Tokyo-City for
solo Piano draws on the
same inspiration, fuelled
by several stays in
Japan. Gaussin sets out
to reproduce the various
sensations he experienced
during his walks around
the Japanese megalopolis:
a fear of being swallowed
up by its vastness gives
way to a bedazzlement in
the face of a buzzing
universe awash with
harmonies and colours.
The work follows a dual
symmetrical structure (in
terms of register and
tempo): after an
enigmatic start entrusted
to the low notes of the
piano, a musical figure
gradually emerges from
'floating polyphonies',
producing a veritable
toccata which is slowly
deformed, like an
anaEmorphosis. Then, only
a glimmering of
crystal-clear harmonies
remains, and the work
ends sparsely on the
highest notes of the
piano.&rdquo.
