Parmi les trois sonates de jeunesse op. 2 dédiées à Joseph Haydn, celle du milieu fut vraisemblablement composée au cours de l'hiver 1794/1795. Jusqu'à ce jour, elle reste à tort dans l'ombre des deux autres sonates, bien plus populaires: la sonate op. 2,1 en fa mineur, sombre et passionnée, et la sonate op. 2,3 en ut majeur, puissante et virtuose. En effet, de par la gaieté de son caractère, les évolutions surprenantes de sa forme et le plaisir du jeu qui s'en dégage, c'est celle des trois qui correspond le mieux à l'héritage de Haydn, le maître vénéré. Pour autant, elle recèle également des traits originaux la projetant loin dans l'avenir: ainsi le chant profond du Largo appassionnato dans le deuxième mouvement et la désignation pour la première fois du menuet qui suit par le terme de «scherzo», avec un véritable Ländler en guise de trio.
