Heralds of Spring. Par RAFF JOSEPH JOACHIM. Joachim Raff?s 12 piano pieces Frühlingsboten op. 55, originating in 1852/53, mark a new creative start in his compositional oeuvre, in which the composer left behind his previously written and published piano works. The title of the work, translated as ?Heralds of Spring,? is multilayered: It refers not only to spring in nature as expressed in the headings of the first two pieces, ? Winterruhe [Hibernation]? and ? Frühlingsnahen [Spring?s Approach],? but the words ?Heralds of Spring? also indicate love?s spring, the blossoming of love for his future wife, the actress Doris Genast. This appears in the headings of the pieces as of no. 3, sketching the path of an imaginary couple approaching union via various annoyances. And ultimately, Raff saw in his new piano work the ?harbingers? of his future works, created under ?happy circumstances.? In Frühlingsboten Raff repeatedly demonstrates his ability to adapt idioms and compositional techniques from works by Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and others. Edward Elgar's Salut d'amour is one of those pieces by the British composer that has a particularly haunting melody. Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, the work became an enormous success early on. Notes in the surviving autographs for the versions for Violin and Piano (HN 1188), Violoncello and Piano (HN 1189) and Piano solo show that Elgar had intended making arrangements for numerous scorings - but only the three named versions were authorised through original manuscripts. Amongst these the piano version has a special signifi cance: Caroline Alice Roberts was a piano pupil of Elgar's and thus the composer might have rewritten the original for violin and piano for his fiancée and later wife. Alongside the first print, we have also evaluated Elgar's autograph engraver's copy for the first time. / Piano

In many of my earlier pieces I had fled into preparing the piano, wanting to avoid hearing the natural piano sound, which I knew too well and with which I had lived for forty years. I had always found it extremely difficult to say something personal, maybe even new with this sound. But this time I had to face the piano as such and try to make something interesting. Robert composed and published many variations of his own on Clara's theme. Her own variations remained unknown until recently. These variations are very interesting, and the theme is easily recognizable throughout. “Theme and Variations” truly showcases Clara’s unique sense of creativity. These piano selections are presented as examples of Clara Schumann's legacy–a great composer of the 19th century. Her music is timeless and must be preserved for future generations of pianists. Polnisches Weihnachtslied in der Fassung von Simon Laks. Par LAKS SIMON. Simon Laks (1901-1983), who came from an assimilated Jewish family in Warsaw, composed arrangements of both Jewish and Christian folk songs which captivate by their subtle piano writing. His Eight Jewish Folk Songs from 1947, composed two years after his liberation from the Auschwitz death camp, are classics of the repertoire. Another real gem is his version of the Polish Christmas carol Jezusek (Little Jesus), which was rediscovered only recently as part of the complete recording of Laks? songs. Still very popular in Poland today, the pastorale with the original title Oj malu'ki, malu'ki originates from the Podhale region of southern Poland. Laks? piano accompaniment is especially enchanting, with its canonically treated secondary part and cleverly used chromatic suspensions and passing notes, which allude to the future suffering of Christ without taking away any of the melody's warmth. Holger Groschopp, who has been studying the works of Simon Laks as an interpreter and arranger for a long time, let himself be inspired by Laks' artful arrangement and wrote the present free arrangement as a 'song without words'. / Date parution : 2024-01-06/ Répertoire / Piano

Par BOULEZ PIERRE. “Fragment d‘une ébauche” is a very short piano work which Pierre Boulez dedicated to Jean-Marie Lehn in 1987 on the occasion of his Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Jean-Marie Lehn held the chair of chemistry at the Collège de France while Pierre Boulez gave lectures in invention, technique and language of music. A friendship connected the two persons.
Pierre Boulez dedicated this piece to Jean-Marie Lehn and wrote on the score: ‘The fragment of a future work for piano and instrumental ensemble, still in draft form.
