Almost no other
song in the history of
pop has been covered in
as many versions as the

Yesterday from

provides the perfect

recreates the
unmistakable sound of the
original whilst giving
the impression that the
entire song ideal was
always meant to be played

Quatuor No
2 was first performed by
the Tana string quartet
on April 14, 2013, at
Radio France, Paris. I
conceived a piece whose
principal subject was
going to consist in the
description of a
minuscule sonic element.
The description of this
tiny initial material
would be so precise, so
detailed that, deployed
on a much larger scale
than its original one, it
would occupy the entire
duration of the piece. At
that point, I just had to
choose a sound model as
the starting point of the
piece, the sound that
would best characterize
the string instruments
themselves: the noisy
sound produced by the bow
barely coming in contact
with one of the strings,
getting ready to acquire
speed, weight,
acceleration, and
producing a full sound of
a violin, a viola or a
cello... -Daniel
D'Adamo.

With its
simple, memorable melody
and folk-song style,
You Are My
Sunshine is
undoubtedly one of
America’s most
successful old-time music
love songs. Its success
in the 1940s massively
boosted the popularity of
the song’s singer
and guitarist, Jimmie
Davis and Charles
Mitchell, so much so that
it helped to springboard
Davis’ political
career, culminating in
his successful election
as Governor of Louisiana
in 1944. Dezaire’s
skilful arrangement
retains the
quintessential country
sound of the original
with this new string
quartet
orchestration.

de Amerikaanse
old-time-muziektraditie
met een eenvoudige,
volksliedachtige en
bijzonder aanstekelijke

Davis en gitarist Charles
Mitchell werden er in de
jaren 1940 enorm populair
mee. Het succes gaf Davis
zelfs een beslissende
boost in zijn politieke
carrière, die hij
bekroonde met zijn
verkiezing tot gouverneur
van de Amerikaanse staat

heeft met dit arrangement
de kenmerkende

Gran Torso,
for string quartet, was
composed in 1971 and
revised in 1978. It
belongs to a series of
works, including Air,
Kontrakadenz, Pression
and Klangschatten, whose
concept of material
attempts to free itself
from convention. That is,
instead of using the
sound itself as a point
of departure, structural
and formal hierarchies
are derived from the
mechanical and physical
conditions present during
the process of sound
production. It is clear
that such a radical break
with tradition is not
easily achieved: the
instrument, the given
means, the resonating
body itself (as the
embodiment of convention)
all work against such
attempts (with the
extended performance
techniques representing
only the tip of the
iceberg of deep-seated
contradictions where the
bourgeois artist is
concerned). Implicit in
such a challenge,
however, is a claim to
aesthetic pregnance: an
offer, if one would have
it, of uncomprosing
beauty.(Helmut

In this
piece, commissioned by
the WDR and premiered by
the Quatuor Diotima in
Witten in 2016, Johannes
Boris Borowski shows
that, to him, the string
quartet genre is a
rewarding field of
experimentation despite
any past history: A
separate architecture
emerges from the
contrasting of noise and
sound-oriented music, an
architecture which causes
either rather active or
rather passive listening,
depending on the music's
consistency. The composer
got his extra-musical
inspiration from
Dostoyevsky's 'The

hypnotic detailed drama,
the rhythmic change in
narrative perspective and
the interconnection of

writes: Quartet No. 3
Motet was written in
1979, commissioned by the
Lerchenborg music-week of
1979 during which it was
first performed by
Quatuor Bernede. This
short one-movement
quartet is a kind of
modernization of the 14th
century French motets, a
cadeau to this weird and
fantastic music whose
abstract and almost
deprecatory, introvert
expression appears
unaccountably modern and
incredibly ancient at the
same time. Motet is a
sober, cool treatise on
rhythm and statics,
depicted in a Gothic,
crypt-like atmosphere.
The almost completely
non-vibrato movement is
suggestive of boys'
choir, monks'
processions, and the
piercing sound of musical
glasses. An ancient world
is reborn and becomes the
world of today.
