Richard
Ayres' Three Small Pieces
for String Quartet each
have distinct characters
that illustrate the
composer's vivid
imagination and skill for
combining energetic,
touching and sometimes
wild music. The first
piece is a short tribute
to the Romanian singer
Maria Tanase, a long
forgotten performer who
was once a star in her
country. The second is a
rough, fast and folk-like
section in 11/16 time and
the third, subtitled
'Countess Eva von Spendu
(on a horse) gallops
through the forest
(pausing four times to
contemplate natural
splendour)', contains (in
the words of the
composer) 'hunting
gallops, a Feldmanesque
19 bar blues, some
devilish fiddling,
moments of repose and
contemplation, and a
lyrical finale.'.
This product
includes the score and
the parts (A4 sized).
American-Finn
ish composer Alex Freeman
(b.1972) has established
himself among the
foremost composers of
choral music in Finland.
A dedicated citizen of
his musical community, a
teacher, and a choral
singer himself, he
composes music that
reflects an appreciation
for a wide range of
aesthetics and a passion
for communicating with
listeners and performers.
In his choral works, in
particular, we find music
that aims to be sonorous,
melodic, and resonant,
but is always crafted to
carefully avoid the
cliches that can burden
conventional tonality.
His instrumental
works run the gamut: a
cantata with orchestra
based on poetry of
Whitman; a significant
body of solo piano works
that reveal deep roots in
everything from austere
absolute music to soaring
elegaic rhetoric (see
Albany Records, Inner
Voice); his chamber work
Blueshift (Navona
Records), which is a kind
of paean to Reich and
Adams in miniature;
open-ended modular works,
like various iterations
of his Slow All Clocks
for electronic media,
solo clarinet, and mixed
choirs of kanteles; and,
recently, some new
directions in microtonal
music.

This
humorous little vignette
for string quartet was
composed in 1979 and was
originally intended to be
published by Piedmont
Music, the ASCAP division
of EB Marks Classical.
For reasons unknown,
however, it remained in
manuscript form until
2021, when a copy of the
composer's autograph
parts was discovered in
the archives of a
completely different Alan
Shulman piece. This newly
engraved Latham Music
edition therefore
represents the first
publication of Shulman's
delightful work, as well
as the first full score.
As the title suggests,
this is a medium-slow
rag, or cakewalk in a
loose AABA form. The
bluesy and graceful main
melody is introduced by
the first violin in a
call and response
exchange with the rest of
the ensemble. The
restatement of the
primary theme is led by
the second violin, with
the entire ensemble
playing pizzicato, having
the effect of playful
mockery. In the B
section, the first violin
earnestly reasserts the
stately grace from the
opening however, the
cello is clearly becoming
restless and decides to
take over the lead just
before the final reprise.
The lighthearted ending
again has the first
violin doing its best to
bring the tune to a
refined conclusion, but
the rest of the group
still has mischief in
mind. After a couple
moments of seeming
confusion, the ensemble
regroups at last and
plays the final riff with
resolute emphasis. If
you're looking to add a
light moment to a recital
program, or looking for a
short, medium level
contest piece that
players and audiences
alike will enjoy, this
little miniature is an
ideal choice!
