The work of
Paul Hindemith is
encyclopedic in nature.
From the outset, he
worked in all musical
genres and devised
several of his musical
ideas and projects not as
individual,
self-contained works but
as work cycles with
different functional
relationships. These
contrasting pieces
complement each other if
experienced as part of
the overall structure.
Hindemith himself not
only wanted a complete
edition of his collected
works but had begun
planning it; at his death
he left a detailed list
of ‚Unpublished
pieces for an eventual
complete
edition‘.The
Complete Works contain
all finished works in all
extant versions, newly
engraved for the edition.
Sketches and fragments
are published in
appendices of the
relevant volume, and are
evaluated in the
Introduction and Critical
Commentary by the
respective volume
editor.Each volume
contains a preface by the
editorial directors and
an introduction by the
volume editor,
delineating the genesis
and performance history
of the work, with
authentic performance
instructions, an
evaluation of extant
recordings by Paul
Hindemith himself and a
Critical Commentary.The
Complete Works of Paul
Hindemith are thus
presented in a critical,
scholarly edition which
is equally appropriate
for study and
performance. Hindemith
researchers will welcome
the numerous first
publications of works by
the composer, and
practical musicians will
appreciate the newly
prepared, philologically
ordered performance
material.

The
Austro-Hungarian composer
Erwin Schulhoff
(1894-1942) was musically
precocious: At the
suggestion of AntonÃn
Dvorák, he
receivedpiano lessons at
the age of seven, and at
the age of ten became a
student at the Prague
Conservatory. Further
piano studies in Vienna,
Cologne and Leipzig as
well as composition
lessons with Max Reger
supplemented his
education. His Jewish
heritage, which defamed
his music as
“degenerateâ€,
and his sympathy for
communism, however, cost
him his life. In Prague
and finally interned in
Wülzburg near
Weissenburg in Bavaria,
he died of tuberculosis.
Schulhoff's musical
significance lies in the
integration of jazz into
art music, for example in
his oratorio H.M.S. Royal
Oak or in his Hot Sonata
for alto saxophone and
piano. He earned his
living as a jazz pianist
for a long time. In
August 1922 he wrote four
short piano pieces, his
Rag Music, to which he
added four more phrases
in November: released as
Partita, also known as
Jazz-like Partita - with
the fashion dances
Ragtime, Foxtrott,
Shimmy, Boston and - as
No. 7 - a tango. From a
piano to a string quartet
movement, the arrangement
presents itself as a
delicate and smart,
technically not too
difficult sweet, suitable
as a diversion or
addition in a quartet
program.

With
serious string players
this Latvian composer has
long been recognized
because of his sonorous
tonal concepts and his
modal, occasionally
aleatoric idiom. Works
like 'Cantabile per
Archi' or 'Musica
dolorosa' are already
quite well-known, but
newer pieces like the
violin concerto with
string orchestra 'Fernes
Licht', commissioned by
Gidon Kremer for his
Kremerata Baltica, are
also gaining wide
international exposure.
The genre of the string
quartet is well
represented in Vasks'
output. The 2nd string
quartet 'Summer Tunes'
(ED 8512) has been
published for some time
and the 3rd was premiered
by the Kronos Quartet who
were so enthused that
they commissioned a 4th
quartet. In 1996,
prompted by a complete
recording of all his
string quartets by the
Miami String Quartet for
Conifer Records Vasks
totally revised his early
1st string quartet 1996,
it is here presented for
the first time in a
printed edition.

This work
is among the subtropical
plants series of composer
Xiaogang Yes wroks, in
which include Enchanted
Bamboo, Hibiscus, Datura,
December Chrysanthemum,
Scent of Green Mango,etc.
These works show the
Southern-originated
musicians sensitivity and
attention to the natural
environment in a country
of the Far East. Gardenia
indistinctly means
eternal joy in Chinese
context. It isborn in a
moist natural environment
with a kind of faintly
fragrant scent; its white
color is of high
aesthetic value to
Asians. Andit is usually
used as food and medicine
in South Asia. The
gardenia honey is with
mild sweet and faint
sweet. The Gardenia is
also acity flower of
Yueyang City, which is a
quiet and distant small
city located in Hunan
Province, South of China.
When composing this work,
the composer adopted folk
operas and folk songs in
the area of Yueyuang,
showing his yearning and
a sense of loss to the
beautiful scenery in
South China.

Dessau's
String Quartet movement
was written while he was
also working on Brecht's
opera Puntila. After
Brecht's death in 1956
Dessau found himself
looking for a new
direction. On the one
hand he was still working
on music begun in
collaboration with the
poet, while on the other
hand Dessau was trying to
work towards a socially
oriented musical
aesthetic, which led him
to compose songs for
political purposes. Even
this Quartet movement
does not owe its
inspiration purely to an
artistic vision. In spite
of its technical demands,
the piece is intended to
be comprehensible and
could even be played by
an amateur ensemble in
its cleverly reduced
form. Only discovered
after the composer's
death, the Movement for
String Quartet is
published for the first
time in this edition.

The
first movement is
characterized by the
interplay between a
delicate, almost fragile
theme and its extremely
harsh development. The
second is melodic and the
third tonally repetitive.
The finale almost seems
to seek the introductory
theme, but quickly
fades.

What
do Beethoven and the
children's song Fuchs Du
hast die Gans gestohlen
have in common? Nothing,
strictly speaking.
Although the song was
written as early as 1824
(and theoretically,
Beethoven could have
known it), it has not
left deep marks on his
oeuvre. But what if he
had known it? Wolfgang
Birtel pursued this
question and, in reply to
it, conceived a symphony
for string quartet:
behind each movement is
an original symphony by
Beethoven (spiced with
quotes from other works).
The children's song
appears as the main theme
in the final movement of
Symphony No. 1, in the
famous funeral march of
Eroica, fate knocks at
the door (of the goose
house) in remembrance of
Symphony No. 5, and the
work ends with Ode to the
Roast Goose (Symphony No.
9). A funny and cleverly
arranged collage, a
performing and listening
pleasure in the footsteps
of Beethoven.

Patc
hwork, the third string
quartet by Barbara
Heller, with its cheerful
and light character, is
an enjoyable piece.
Playfully flowing
figures, often in
pizzicato, alternate with
'still soundscapes'.
Designed by Heller as a
tritone study, the tonal
material consists of
whole-tone relations
throughout. The unusual
tone colour of the
tritone therefore
requires precise
intonation. with regards
to tempo, it allows for
free interpretation:
Patchwork can either be
played statically at a
moderate tempo or one can
'scurry' quickly and
humorously through the
piece.

The composition
of Krzysztof Penderecki's
four string quartets is
marked by an
idiosyncratic
interruption: the first
two experimental,
improvisatory quartets
were composed in swift
succession in the 1960s.
The third and fourth
quartets followed
substantially later, but
were also written in
relatively quick
succession in the years
2008 and 2016. The
quartet cycle as a whole
is exemplary of the
composerÂ’s two
extensive creative
phases, thus displaying a
stylistic change that is
in a class of its own in
the history of music. The
very short unnumbered
quartet Der unterbrochene
Gedanke [The Broken
Thought], written 1988 in
the middle of the
'quartet break', appears
as an only too apt
commentary.
