The Phantom
of the Opera is,
without doubt, one of the
great classics of our
time. The stage
production of this tale,
exciting and mysterious
in equal measure, has now
captivated over a million
theatre-goers. The
phantom sings the song
The Music of the
Night to the
beautiful Christine, who
he has just kidnapped
into his realm, as if
entrancing her. This
enchanting mood is so
authentically recreated
in Nico Dezaire’s
sensitive arrangement for
string quartet that it
feels like listening to
the singer perform the
original version from the
musical.
De
musical The Phantom of
the Opera is zonder
twijfel een van de grote
klassiekers van onze
tijd. De theaterversie
van dit spannende en
tegelijk mysterieuze
verhaal heeft in de loop
der tijd al een
miljoenenpubliek
getrokken. Met het lied
The Music of the
Night brengt het
spook de mooie Christine,
die hij zojuist naar zijn
rijk heeft ontvoerd, als
het ware in trance. De
betoverende sfeer wordt
in dit gevoelige
strijkkwartetarrangement
van de hand van Nico
Dezaire zo authentiek
overgebracht, dat het
voelt alsof je luistert
naar de zanger in de
originele versie uit de
musical.
Das
Phantom der Oper
gehört zweifellos zu
den ganz großen
Musical-Klassikern
unserer Zeit. Die
Bühnenversion dieser
ebenso spannenden wie
mystischen Geschichte hat
schon ein
Millionenpublikum in
seinen Bann gezogen. Mit
dem Lied The Music of
the Night singt das
Phantom die schöne
Christine, die er soeben
in sein Reich entführt
hat, gleichsam in Trance.
Eben diese Stimmung
lässt Nico Dezaire in
seiner einfühlsamen
Bearbeitung für
Streichquartett so
glaubwürdig wieder
aufleben, dass es sich so
anfühlt, als höre
man dem Sänger der
originalen
Musical-Fassung
zu.

When his
musical triad op. 192 was
created in the winter of
1873/74, Raff was one of
Germany's most successful
composers and the central
artistic authority in the
Hessian spa, royal
residence and imperial
city of Wiesbaden. With
op. 192, Raff cultivated
his reputation as an
erudite composer who was
a master of contrapuntal
forms. By the time the
string quartets were
composed, he had already
established himself as
one of the most prolific
and versatile suite
composers of the 19th
century, as is evident
here in the various suite
conceptions: Opus 192 No.
1 (in C minor), as Suite
in the ancient style, has
with Baroque labels
stylized dance movements
follow one another. Die
schone Mullerin [The Fair
Maid of the Mill] op. 192
No. 2 (in D major), on
the other hand,
interprets the suite as a
sequence of chapters in a
musical narrative and
thus becomes probably the
first tone poem in string
quartet scoring. In the
third quartet (in C
major), of which Raff the
artist was proudest,
other genre designations
mix in among the dance
movements, and with its
free succession of
different movement types,
not usual for a sonata,
it preserves structural
openness. In
collaboration with the
Joachim-Raff-Archiv

Some
eighteen years elapsed
between Raff's first
counted String Quartet
op. 77 and his Quartets
Nos. 6-8 op. 192,
combined as one work. As
such, Raff parted with
the weighty single opus
in quartet composition -
without, however,
sacrificing musical
quality.

String
Quartet No.4 was written
for the Camilli Quartet
who gave the first
performance at the Queen
Elizabeth Hall, London,
April 1995. It is
dedicated to the memory
of Nyman's composition
teacher, Alan Bush. This
quartet is a narrative
made up of a chain of
twelve complete but often
cross-related movements,
each quite simple in
design. For instance, the
Scottish melody first
heard in the second half
of I is hinted at in the
2nd violin/viola in the
second fast section of II
and is directly quoted
again during III and XII.
The theme of the fast
section of IV is taken up
again in VIII; IX reverts
to the mood of the
opening of I, while the
rising scale/syncopated
themes of II, IX and the
bass of X and XII are
related. X also
reintroduces the slow
harmonics theme from VII.
XII is (apparently) cast
in the form of a baroque
French rondeau. The main
theme of VI was plucked
out of the Quartet and
used in my score for
Christopher Hampton's
film Carrington. Duration
40 minutes. A set of
parts is available for
sale.
Arranged by Deborah
Greenblatt. Spiral-bound.

and the relentless

Mendelssohn's Wedding
March, Wagner's Bridal
March, and for you Alfred
Hitchcock fans, Gounod's
Funeral March of a
